  • How do I dilute to make a stock solution, chem lab final?

    So my chem lab final is coming up, and this is what the email said it entails:

    The practical will test your ability to make a stock solution of a specified concentration from a solid and then make a dilution of specified concentration from the stock solution.

    Can someone please explain what this means in less general terms, and perhaps do an example or give a useful link? Maybe you've even done this before!

    I'm worried about this and I really need an A, so anything to help me better understand this would be great!

    Thanks!

  • Why is carbon monoxide toxic, not a homework answer, just for fun?

    So if a carbonyl group is essentially the same as a carbon monoxide molecule, then is carbon monoxide toxic because it can polarize hydrocarbon chains in the body by turning otherwise nonpolar unsaturated fats into carboxylic acids in conjunction with a donated -OH from water?

    This isn't a homework question or anything, I just thought it was interesting when I read that a carbon monoxide is sometimes labeled a carbonyl group when it is acting as a ligand. I'm probably nowhere near correct, but I thought that it made sense. I'd be interested to know anything about how close I am to reality, if I am close at all...

  • Convert grams of water to liters, easy calculation?

    For a lab report, I am measuring the volume of water displaced. I forgot to measure volume, but instead measured change in mass.

    There was an increase of 93.65g of water at 344.8K and .9978 atm.

    I need to find the liters, or mL of water that was displaced. Please help!

  • Can nonpolar molecules attract anything other than nonpolar molecules?

    I have a chem question that is as follows:

    Which of the following are true?

    1. Nonpolar molecules can only attract other nonpolar molecules.

    2. Polar molecules exhibit dipole-dipole forces.

    3. Nonpolar molecules exhibit dispersion forces.

    4. Polar molecules can only attract other polar molecules.

    5. Polar molecules exhibit charge-dipole forces.

    6. Polar molecules exhibit dispersion forces.

    7. A nonpolar molecule can induce a dipole in another nonpolar molecule

    I'm pretty sure 2,3,6, and 7 are true, and that 4 is not true, but I am unsure about 1 and 5. Help please? Thanks!

  • Easy dilution problem?

    I have 500 mL of a 1.9E-4 Molar solution and then took 1 ml of that and added water to make 100ml of a dilute solution. How do I find the concentration of this dilute solution? PLEASE help ASAP

  • Gas laws question, what am I doing wrong here?

    My question is this:

    Calculate the molar mass of a gas at 351 torr and 45°C if 204 ng occupies 0.206 µL.

    I converted ng to 2.04E-9 g and µL to 2.06E-6

    P=.4618 atm

    T= 318K

    R= .08206

    V= 2.06E-6

    After finding n from n= PV/RT,

    I got it down to

    2.04E-9 / n = molecular mass

    My final answer came out to be about .0559 and I rounded to .056 in webassign.

    What have I done wrong!? I used up all my answers and its killing me because I tried this so many times!

  • Cos and sin without a calculator?

    So my friend and I are having a ton of trouble on this and its killing me.

    Please explain how and why you got your answer. Its crucial I understand this!

    Assume that we know

    Sin(pi/8) = sqrt(2-(sqrt(2)))/2

    Find the following values exactly, without the use of a calculator.

    a) cos(pi/8)

    b) cos (33pi/8)

    c) tan (-7pi/8)

    Thanks!

  • (Sin*tan)/cos How do I simplify?

    Sin(x)(tan(x)/(cos(x)

    I've worked this over so many different ways and I don't know how to get it. Can someone show me a step by step? I'm sure its easier than I'm making it out to be.

  • How can I avoid developing trust issues?

    The last guy I was in a relationship had trust issues after having his heart broken. This in turn led him to not being honest with me about it, and eventually he broke my heart and was a jerk.

    I don't want to end up like him and have trouble opening up and trusting other guys, but I also don't want to be taken advantage of again.

    How can I be cautious in a relationship without hurting the guy?

    I need to find a medium.

  • Why do guys have to always have control?

    Why is it that a guy would always rather be a jerk than just admit he's wrong and move on, especially if the girl is the type to always admit when she's wrong and continues to forgive him?

    I thought this guy was different and nice, but he never apologized when he should have and turned it around to make me feel like I owe him an apology or something or I need to be careful about what I say.

    How can I repair things and get him to stop thinking he can f*** with my head? Because I'm sick of it, but I don't want to lose touch with him entirely.

    And we are not in a romantic relationship anymore, he claims we are friends but that is the last thing he is treating me like.

  • Does even want to be just friends?

    So I won't give the entire background between me and this guy, because it would take all night. We are both on winter break from college. He is staying in the dorms as is basically totally alone. I am at home and none of my friends live here so I am totally alone too. We used to be in a romantic relationship a few months ago, but we had to break it off, but he's the kind of person I'd be best friends with anyway, and so we tried to stay friends. Then I went through some really rough emotional stuff with him, to the point where he thought I was pretty crazy.

    But things seemed to settle down and I felt like we were repairing our friendship little by little, but whenever he's around me he hardly says anything and acts like he barely knows me. Its been months since I've seen him smile and we rarely make eye contact any more. He said a few times that he'd like to hang out, but I don't feel at liberty to ask to hang out first because of what we've been through.

    I realized that 9 out of 10 times I text him first, and half the time he doesn't even reply to me which I find really rude, and the other half the conversation never lasts. So I stopped texting him for 2 days and he ended up texting me first and asked to go for a run and chatted with me a bit.

    I wanted to bring him over some leftover christmas dinner today but he said he just wanted to be alone. Like he expected me to try and come over and hang out, God forbid. He's been alone in the dorms for weeks and the only time I've seen him was when we went for a run and then he just left without a word when we were done.

    Why would he say he wants to hang out if he never really does? And what's up with him only texting him when I ignore him? I feel like he's just messing with me just for fun. I've cried myself to sleep so many nights wondering what to do because I am so mad at him its ridiculous. I've given so much effort and gone out of my way to be careful about what I say and do and I get absolutely nothing in return.

    I finally texted him tonight saying he is a **** friend and thats all hoping he might give some hint of apology, but I know he will just make some excuse or say nothing at all.

    I have no idea what to do because he tells me absolutely nothing and I have no idea how to read him. He claims he doesn't like games but that's exactly what he's doing to me.

    So I need advice. Do I play him at his game and just ignore him? Or do I apologize and let him keep stringing me along, hoping it all works out? Or do I just forget about him completely?

  • Population growth equation?

    The fox population in a certain region has an annual growth rate of 5 percent per year. It is estimated that the population in the year 2000 was 12000.

    (a) Find a function that models the population t years after 2000 (t=0 for 2000).

    I thought that it would be:

    12000*(1+.05)^((t-2000)/14.21)

    with 14.21 being the time in years it takes for the population to double which I found by doing another equation.

    PLEASE help I'm so stumped.
