I'm going to Missouri University of Science and Technology. I am a fairly reliable source for many science and tech questions! I won't answer if I don't know for sure.

  • My checks got stolen by an ATM. Has this ever happened to you?

I have Bank of America, which allows me to deposit checks any time at their ATMs. Usually I have a very good experience at the ATM, but today's experience was a nightmare.

I went to finally deposit some checks for my tax refunds as well as a rebate check I got. I put the checks in the machine, and it accepted them, but then I realized I forgot to endorse them, so I asked the machine to return them. The machine tried, but gave up and went out of service, keeping my checks and cancelling my transaction.

It's almost like this ATM committed theft. I thought about calling the police, but I knew they couldn't do anything about it. They're just checks I guess and have no value until I actually cash them (which I COULDN'T), but now I don't even have them to prove that the money should be mine. I tried calling the Bank of America help line, but apparently they don't operate on Saturdays. Go figure.

After that I threw a fit by the ATM, flipping off the camera. I know it was childish but this stupid computer just had to ruin my day. I just hope my checks are safe. I know I need to endorse the tax refunds. They're government checks for hell's sake.

Is there any consolation out there?

  • I have a question about how eyeglasses work?

I have been wearing eyeglasses for 10 years now and I have never noticed anything like this before...

I just got a new pair of eyeglasses. When I put them on, I noticed certain things were a little fuzzy... i closed my left eye and the object I was looking at was clear. Then I closed my right eye, and the same object looked a bit fuzzy.

I have rolled with it for a day now (i also wear contacts of the same prescription but don't really have this issue with the contacts). Upon testing each eye looking at objects, it seems that when I am far from an object, it looks much better through my right lens. However, when I am closer, it looks better through my left lens. Yet, I have never really taken notice of this before in other lenses. Also, I have astigmatism.

Is this normal? Is it supposed to be a way to create a better view distance by using parallax images? Or is my prescription wrong?

  • Trying to figure out what indie song this is...?

It's an indie song for sure (probably heard this song listening to artists similar to Phoenix). The singer is male and sings quietly (the song is very gentle). There are 8 chords played in succession on an acoustic guitar. Each odd chord lasts for 5 beats, and each even chord lasts for 3 beats. The chord progression is this:

    A v F ^ G v C ^ C ^ E ^ F ^ G v C (the karots and 'V's indicate whether the chord played is lower or higher than the last one)

If you can tell me the name of this song with these clues, the points and my gratefulness shall be forever bestowed upon you.

  • Has there ever been an episode of Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown, etc. where the plaintiff called off the suit?

Has there ever been an episode where the plaintiff decided the lawsuit wasn't worth it and both parties apologized on camera? For that matter, has there ever been a non-televised case that was like that, or is it even possible to call off a lawsuit while in court?

  • Which book should I read?

I have six to choose from:

    1. Gulliver's Travels - Jonathan Swift

2 Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky

    3. Zorba the Greek - Nikos Kazantzakis

    4. 1984 - George Orwell

    5. Hunger - Knut Hamsun

    6. Blindness - Jose Saramago

Which is most interesting, and which would be a good book to research?

  • Wii has slow disc read speed?

I have had a Wii for a few years. On more than one occasion, it has been knocked over by my short-tempered family members (usually drops of about 4 feet onto a carpet). I'm actually quite surprised it's still working.

Whenever I try to play a game it has an extremely slow read speed and it can take up to 3 minutes to load a level. Obviously the Wii has damaged part(s), but which part(s) do you think it/they could be? If I had to guess, I would say the lens is damaged, but any input would be helpful. I plan on taking it in to my local game store which does repairs. Any other advice?

  • If a college says that its admission requirements are 4 years of math coursework, are there no exceptions?

I'm planning on applying to Missouri University of Science and Technology. In their admission requirements, it states that incoming students should have 4 years of math coursework completed during high school. I have had 3. It was only recently that some colleges made the change to require 4 years of math.

I would like to go to this school to study computer sciences and engineering, considering I am taking several courses at my high school that relate to these, including Computer Hardware and Maintenance, Operating Systems, and Networking. All of these classes are worth dual credit for a local community college, and in some cases these credits are transferable.

I scored 31 on the ACT, excelling in math and science, and I have a GPA of 4.33 and a class rank of 31/556. In the optional essay, would it be possible to make a persuasive case for my admission to the college? And even if I were to get it, would it be possible to get financial aid with my achievements and extracurriculars in school?

I don't wish to brag, but I want to explain my circumstances. I am a member of the Drama Club and International Thespian Society, Science Olympiad/Science Club, and I have won awards for general excellence (Choice Student/Honor Roll) and language awards.

So, in short, do colleges make exceptions for some shortcomings if you excel in other things?

  • Problem with HTC Hero picking up calls?

I always have to be careful when pulling my HTC Hero out of my pocket because sometimes I accidentally hang up. However, even if I do manage to get it out of my pocket and it still has plenty of ring time, I press the green talk button that's physically on my phone (not on the screen), and it says I missed the call when I still had plenty of time to pick up. Why? I answer the call then it hangs up and says I missed it!

I am getting so aggravated by this because it does this a lot!

  • Why bother trying to impress part-time employers anymore?

There are no part-time jobs available for students in town, and the instant a job position opens up, the preferred "AVERAGE JOE" gets picked over the honors student. And I know exactly why: It's because honors students are biased against. Employers seem to think that all honors students are only book-smart, that is, good at taking in and simply regurgitating knowledge. Apparently honors students are only book smart and simply lack common sense.... WHAT!??!

No labeling is good labeling, and I believe strongly against all stereotyping, whether it be racial, sexist, or anything else. If I WAS guilty of such a horrid thing, I would gladly label myself a fervent hypocrite, because it doesn't make any sense hating stereotypes if you believe in them yourself.

The employer's choice to hire an average student over an honors student makes me passionately angry. While there are a few honors students who are only book smart, many actually DO have common sense and are VERY hard workers are willing to dedicate themselves to tasks on the job.

So, since lashing out against labeling is wrong and inexcusable, no matter what the label is, what do I do? I have three options.

    1. Quit trying. Cancel my car insurance. Continue doing well in school but have no use for the parking space I won from a raffle during prom night.

    2. Drop all my grades to B's and C's. Not extremely hard, but doubtful to work now. I already have a good record and I'm going to be a senior this year. It will be too easy to get A's because I've gotten the difficult classes out of the way. I'm taking the easy classes last because I thought I would have a job and it would give me a bit of relief. So much for thinking that!

    3. Keep trying and continue to fail at the hands of the authoritarian dictators who call themselves "equal opportunity employers." I honestly don't see why this phrase should only apply to women and African Americans. I thought America was the "Land of the Free?" I guess it's just not the "Home of the children willing to try hard and do well in school." Yay, conservative America! Maybe I should go live in Europe? No, I don't have the money to go live there because I DON'T HAVE A JOB!!!

  • How can I get video off of an old camcorder onto the computer?

I have an old Sony Handycam Video 8 CCD-TR64 NTSC. It has audio/video ports, an RFU DC out port, and an LANC port, but I don't see firewire or USB. Is there a cable and software available to rip video and audio off of the tapes? It uses 8mm tapes.

  • New Dell all-in-one computer making a 'ticking' noise?

It's an inspiron one 19. The computer runs perfectly, no visible problems, just a "mysterious ticking noise." I'm thinking it's the fan, but I just want some consolation or a solution on this issue if anyone has had any similar problems.

  • Do you think using Shmoop.com as a source for an 11th grade research paper is acceptable?

The website provides citation information and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to use it as a source.
