I have been studying the Tokyo Subway system for an upcoming trip to Japan. I am not familiar with subway systems due to living in the suburbs, so I am having difficulty finding the true elementary steps of riding the Tokyo subway. How do I know when I'm at a station which platform I should be located and which direction the subway I wish to ride is traveling? Are there only a couple lines that run through particular subways or do all stations house all 13 subway lines? Can I ride the JR without a JR pass? Can you please take me from after I purchase my ticket to boarding the correct subway line to get where I'm going? For example Asakusa to Roppongi? Help with transfers?

I'm going to Japan for the first time at the end of May. I need some help with transportation. I am a college student on a limited budget planning on staying in hostels, sight seeing with focus on the major cites required to see. My plane lands in Tokyo and I also will visit Nikko, Hakone, Kyoto and Nara. The cost of a JR Pass is ludicrous. I have heard of night buses as well as other buses competitively selling their service. Can you please help by explaining in detail how to cost effectively get from Tokyo to Nikko, from Tokyo to Hakone, or Kyoto to Nara? Names of stops would be great. Can I get out at Hakone along the route to Kyoto?

I am from the U.S. and typically if you are in a largely populated center of a city you can just wave down a taxicab driver from the side of the street. From what I understand there are cab stands in Rome, Florence and Genoa that are the locations you can obtain a taxi from. Is there several located throughout the cities? Are they easy to get? Are there companies people call to reserve a cab normally?
