  • Clip-on light on aquarium question?

I have a 10-gallon tank with no hood. I had an idea for lighting it. What if I get 2 light aluminum light reflectors that are really cheap and clip it onto the aquarium? I'll put 2 20-watt bulbs in each or 2 10-watt's. The thing js that all the aluminum clip-ons I find say up to __ watts for a incandescent bulb. Can I still buy it and put flourescent bulbs in it? Or do I have to find a specific lamp that holds flourescent bulbs only?

  • 10 gallon lighting question?

Instead of a full blown hood on my tank, I was thinking about just putting one or maybe even two of those clip on light reflectors and putting a 20 watt bulb on it. Would this work enough to grow plants or is this even possible to do? I will do only low light plants mainly Amazon Swords, Anubias and maybe some Java Ferns. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Bayco-SL-300N4-Clamp-Aluminu... Is this even possible?

  • Aquarium plant question?

I want to know some plants that will do well in Medium light , and regular sand substrate. I dont want to try dirt again because its just so messy and ruins everything. I am going to have ofcourse Amazon Swords. And a lot of them. I really like Amazon Swords, but wont mind having any other plants that dont need that high of light. Can you name some ? Also what can I put in the sand to make it better? Instead of putting clay in dirt and stuff can I use it in just sand ? And what about fertilizers?

  • Dirted tank problem help quick?

I dirted my tank about a month ago and now I just noticed bubbles coming out and it has a very faint smell but I could smell it just a tiny bit when I put my nose just before the bubble pops. I now know this is H2S. What should I do? Its a very faint smell and its the first time I seen this since its been dirted. Im going to do a 50% water change and poke into the substrate to try and release some of them.

  • Cycling a 55g only using a 10g and Aqueon Quietflow 10? (100 GPH)?

I have a 10 gallon tank, cycled since July. So for a few months. Its a dirted, planted tank. It contains 1 Angelfish (Temporary of course, this is why I want to cycle my 55 quick to avoid stunting) and 5 Peppered Corycatfish (Also babies to avoid overstocking). The tank has an Aqueon Quietflow 10 (For up to 20 gallons, 100 GPH flow rate. I want to know whats the fastest way to cycle my 55g. The 55 is going to have a Top Fin 60 thats for up to 60 gallons and 300 GPH. Whats the quickest way to cycle my tank? I was thinking to take my currents filter cartridge and place it in front of my Top Fin filter, kind of like just a regular cartridge change. Do you think this will work? I will also transfer everything from my 10g, to my 55.

  • Amazon Sword Runners?

I have had a mother Amazon Sword and it had 3 runners. I clipped the other two but I left one on there due to it being so small. The shoots got so tall that it shot out of the water, I didnt think it would be a problem so i left it. Soon I seen the part that was out of water started rotting, and spreading lower onto the runner. I clipped it but it spread a bit to 1 of the leaves of the runner. It has been there for like a month and still hasnt changed? No root growth, leaf growth or anything. What can I do?

  • Different type of filters Q's?

I have a 10 gallon that gets cloudy quick despite al of my water changes. Im upgrading to a 55 gallon soon, in a month maybe, but until then I have this. My question is, the Aqueon Quietflow 55/75 ( for up to 90 gallons) is on sale on Petsmart for 40 bucks! I want to get it for my 55 but I know it will be off sale soon. Can I put it in my 10 gallon or will this be WAAAY to much filtration? I feel like im overdoing it by a lot lol. But it solves 3 problems, my cloudy 10 gal, paying more for the filter later on, and not cycling the 55 since I will have that filter ready. Am I going overboard? Also I dont want too much water agitation. Will this work? I fill the water right until the little waterfall where the water comes out so it wont drop into the water and make a bunch of noise and water agitation. Should I just get a regular Quietflow 50? ( 50 gallons ) or go even lower into a 40 or 30?

  • Dirting an Established Tank Pt. 2?

Ok so now I know that I can actually sirt my tank. The soil is safe, I know where im putting my fish etc.. I just have a few more questions. When I put the dirt in a bucket to leech all the ammonia out, how long should I leave it there ? Im thinking a week to a week and a half. Also will my fish be fine in a 5 gallon bucket ?(regular orange Home Depot bucket). If so for how long because I know since Im adding dirt then sand to cap it, its going to get real cloudy. Maybe for almost a day, or a few hours. I might just do it in the night, and leave it overnight so in the morning my tank would be clear, or do it in the morning and at night or so put my fish back, or should I wait a few days instead of 1? I have a small Angelfish and 5 Peppered Corys. (only there until hes big enough to go in my 55 with 1 other Angel thats way bigger than him, I tried putting him in and he got bullied.) I know Angels are super sensitive so will the dirt change my water peramiters? Or will it be ok, I will acclimate them back into the tank slowly.

  • Dirting an established tank ?

Ok so my mom bought some dirt for some plants she has and had some left over, im thinking of adding it to my 10 gallon to make the plants thrive a little. I have researched it and everybody said that the brand is fish safe. I have read that Its very hard to add to a established tank because the dirt leeches ammonia for a few days, is this true ? If so, can I just soak the dirt in a bucket for a week or so then add it ? Regularly rinsing it with hot water and taking out the floating specks? Also, im just going to put my fish in a 5 gallon bucket and add the heater and a bubbler for water agitation since my filter cant fit on the bucket. Will this mess up my cycle for will something spike on my parameters ?

  • What does it mean when plants are " Melting "?

I have seen a lot of people writing that when you first put a plant in your tank it could melt. I think that its when you put a plant in your tank, it has to adjust to your tanks chemistry, like ammonia, ph and stuff so some of the leaves turn yellow or brown and fall off, but they grow back healthier. Am I correct? If not somebody please define this word for me. Clearest definition gets best answer.

  • Possibly breeding Peppered Corydoras?

I have 5 Peppered Cory's, and been wanting to breed them. I have been doing large water changes ( No more than 50% ) and replacing the water with 2-4 degree cooler water. I do this atleast twice a week. The only thing I haven't been doing is feeding them live foods like bloodworms or blackworms. I heard that you can feed them High Quality Flake Food instead of that. I have been doing all this for like 2 or 3 weeks, and today after a 40-50% water change, I turned off the lights and left them in the dark. An hour later I checked on them and saw that someone was digging towards the back, theres a hole in my sand. Could this be the Corys cleaning spawning spots? Should I wait a little longer and see if they clean any other spots? The only other tankmate is an Angel.
