  • My girlfriend is boring...what do I do?

    So yeah my girlfriend is attractive, friendly, caring, and intelligent...but she is really boring. She gets good grades, but it seems like outside of school she goes into braindead mode. We can't ever have intellectual conversations because she always just ends up saying "yes", "no", or "I don't know". And we can't even really talk about our day because she expects to always be with me so there's nothing she doesn't know. And she expects to always do stuff...but I always have to come up with something to do. I get really tired of guiding ALL of our activities and conversations. If I don't she just lies in bed and watches tv. I've talked to her about it...and unsurprisingly she just says "I don't know". She's really nice and pretty much perfect in other aspects and I don't want to hurt her feelings...but I've just been getting irritated with the whole situation. I want my girlfriends intelligence to be more than superficial. I want her to be interesting...

  • Why will a car battery shock you and a typical 9 volt won't?

    I understand that a car battery is much larger than a 9 volt. But what property makes it so much more dangerous? I'm assuming that being shocked has to do with the amount of current running through your body. So assuming you touch the terminals on a 12 volt car battery the same way that you touch the terminals on a 9 volt and assuming that your body has some fixed resistance the amount of current is just 9/R for the 9 volt and 12/R for the car battery. So it doesn't seem like there would be that much more current running through you're body. So why is it that you get a big shock from the car battery but not from the 9 volt?

  • What is the difference between NCAA Division I FBS and NCAA Division 1?

    So this wikipedia article says that there is no championship game for Division 1 FBS and that the champion is determined by the BCS. But this other page lists the winners for NCAA division 1 football championships. What is the difference? They're both division 1? Is one of them a higher level than the other?

  • Does anyone know what this movie is called?

    Ok so I saw part of this movie on the scifi channel a few years ago and I was looking for it, but I had no luck. It may be a B movie that most people haven't heard of, but I'll try to describe what I remember of it. The thing that stands out the most is that a good bit of it was set in a creepy hospital. The only people in the hospital were cannibalistic nurses and patients that the nurses preyed on. The main character was this guy who had been in a car accident and supposedly lived. For some reason he had to go into the hospital. The last thing I remember is that at the end he realized that he had died in the car crash or something like that and he had been between life and death during the movie or something like that. Thanks for any help.

  • Computing the determinant of a 3x3 matrix?

    I have a linear algebra problem for which I have to compute the determinant of this matrix:

    [[1-t, 1, 0],[1, -t, 1],[0, 1, 1-t]]

    I get the answer to be -t^3 + 2t^2 - 2

    but the answer book gives (1 - t)(t^2 - t - 2)

    and maybe I just don't know how to factor but that doesn't seem right to me. So what's going on here?

  • What is the meaning of this linear algebra problem?

    I should know how to do this problem, but I've never seen one worded like this:

    Consider the basis in R2 given composed of vectors:

    v1 = [1,2] and v3 = [-2,1]

    Let f be a linear map defined by

    f([x, y, z]) = [[1,1] , [2,3]] [x, y]

    *matrix is column major

    now the question is:

    Find the matrix of this map on the basis {v2, v2}

  • Why do computer graphics studios use licensed renderers and software?

    There are free renderers such as POV-Ray that are very competitive, so why do the commercial software companies still use products such as Mental Ray, Renderman, Final Render, etc? If they didn't these companies wouldn't exist. So what make using a commercial program better than an opensource/freeware one?

  • How can I open port 80 on my computer?

    I forwarded the port from my router to the correct local IP. Then I turned off my firewall on XP and I have nVidia firewall off. The port shows up in stealth mode and if I add it to a list of programs that internet users can access, it shows closed. I need it to be open, what can I do?

  • How do you solve this linear algebra problem?

    Given f(x)=x-2(u.x)u where u is any unit vector in R2 how can you show that the function is length preserving and how do you show that f of f is identity.

  • What can I do about my roommate that won't talk to me?

    Ok so for the first two months of school, my roommate and I were pretty good friends. Then one night I came back really drunk, actually blacked out, and I had sex with someone while he was asleep, but in the room. I didn't realize he was in the room because I was in a fragmented blackout and the next morning I didn't even remember having sex until the girl told me. He wasn't around, but I immediately texted him to apologize. But the next time I saw him, he wouldn't talk to me and he gets all pissy around me. He won't even tell me why he's mad at me. I've heard through neighbors it is because I "disrespected" him, but honestly I didn't have good enough judgment at the time to know he was there or to respect or disrespect. I would definitely apologize if he would talk to me about it and tell me why he's mad, but this has been going on for 3 days and I DON'T respect someone who won't talk to me about their problems with me or even respond to me when I do apologize. Sorry for rambling. What do you guys think should I do?

  • Why is clothing gender specific?

    I'm not trying to argue against it, but I am wondering why some clothes are meant to be worn by only men or only women. What is the function or root of this in our society? Is it to distinguish between the genders or is there other purpose for this. I understand that certain clothing is meant to emphasize body parts that are attractive on one gender or the other but what about things like sunglasses or colors and patterns?

  • What size screws will fit a projector that says m4*10 next to each hole?

    I want to build my own mount for a NEC VT540 projector. There are 4 mounting holes for this on the bottom. The projector did not come with any screws, but next to each of the 4 screw holes it says M4*10. The (*) symbol is actually large and the size of a full character. What does this mean? I just need to know what diameter and I guess it's a carriage bolt?

  • What do you guys think will happen on pledge night?

    Ok so I pledged a fraternity and I honestly know nothing about what happens. We're having our pledge night tonight and the only thing that I know is they took 25$ from us and said we'd get it back and they told us not to wear anything that has the school's name or the fraternity on it. I'm a bit worried about this... what do you think they could do?
