I am a canine psychologist in training and also run my own dog walking and socialising business I think it is really important to have a socialised and trained dog that you can take anywhere!

  • Is the dog a pack animal?

Do you think you and your dog are a pack or do you think that humans and dogs or simply a good example of symbiosis (two different species living alongside each other)

  • Has selective breeding damaged our dogs?

    I'm working on my canine behaviour diploma and would be interested on your views on the following question;

Has the selective breeding of dogs for specific physical and behavioural qualities caused the increase in hereditary problems in today's breeds?

You'll be fully credited in my final piece if I can use your feedback

    Thank you

  • Best dog harness for daily wear?

Can anyone reccomend the most comfortable harness for a large gsd cross to wear most of the day?

I'm going on holiday so he will be on the go with us most of the day walking in cornwall

I don't like having him on collar and lesh all the time in case of a sudden reason to pull such as a rabbit or emergency.

A harness suits us both for some relaxed walking I just want to make sure it is the most comfortable for him

    UK suggestions preferred please

  • Responsibility on both sides?

It seems that every ***** near where i live is on heat this past month

It also seems that every owner of these dogs thinks it is fine for them to run off lesh in public dog areas.

Whilst I work hard training my dog he is not going to ignore the scent of a dog in heat every time.

If a ***** in heat is off lesh and my dog doesn't respond to my call am I 100% to blame because most of the owners seem to think I am!

  • How does this change your view?

Ever since the whole exposure programme on breed standards for certain breeds of dog has your opinion of what is correct for a breed of dog changed?

So many people answer questions about breeding on here with

'if the dog is not a show champion don't breed from it'

However, it has now been shown that lots of these 'breed requirements' have led to the creation of illnesses and physical problems in certain breeds.

Does this mean that even though they have a wealth of titles to their name that a dog can still be genetically unhealthy and not a suitable sire/dam?

  • Dog friendly not dog tolerated?

Can any one recommend B&B's or hotels in Cornwall that are truly dog friendly

By this I mean your dog is allowed everywhere in the accommodation and not just in your room. Our dog will not tolerate being left in a strange room whilst we have breakfast or dinner (he howls and barks) meaning my husband and I always have to eat separately or go self catering!

Would be nice to find somewhere our dog can sit with us during breakfast

    Cheers!

  • Is it wrong to choose to have a dog over children?

I like most children and love my neice to bits. I will happily be her playmate all day. However, when I think about my own future I see myself holding a dog on a lead not pushing a buggy....

Is this wrong, most people seem to be without children for medical reasons and I only know one person who specifically choose not to have children.

My husband and I have a dog we adore and a life we enjoy but our friends are starting to have families and parents on both sides have that hopeful grandchildren look in thier eyes!

Our finances are stretched already without a baby

Should I follow the crowd and reproduce or keep things as they are?

I need two costumes one for me one for my husband (and would prefer not tweedle dum and dee!)

    thanks for your help

  • Heat rash in dogs?

my dog seems ot have developed bare patches of skin in his front armpit area and also in a similaur place on his back legs

He has been scratching and licking the area a bit but has been recently frontlined and can't find any fleas

As it is in a joint type area and it has been humid here recently could he have a heat rash or is that a daft idea?

Before anyone says it yes i will be taking him to the vet but it is not cracked or weeping or bothering him so it does not warrent a trip to the emergency vet

  • Eye problem?

My dog seems to have puffy skin around the outside of his left eye.

The actual eyeball looks fine. If the skin was not black I would imagine it would be red and it looks slightly crusty.

He is not rubbing it nor seems irritated it just looks odd.

(Before any one simply shouts back with 'take to the vet' it is sunday afternoon and as he is not displaying any symptoms of any pain so I am not calling the emmergency vet at £50 an hour!)

  • Painful foot?

The inside arch of my right foot is making it painful to walk

I feel like I can not put my foot flat on the floor and tend to walk on the outside on my foot

It is worse if i have been walking around in flat shoes (i wear walking boots at work as it is on a boat) but not as painful if I have worn heels!

Short of wearing stilettos to work which would not go down well can any one suggest what might be wrong or a solution to the pain?

  • Nautral Pain Relief?

Is there a natural pain relief for dogs?

my dog recently sprained his shoulder and is limping.

we and the vet were reluctant to given pescription pain relief as the thoughts were all the pain would go and my dog could do more damage during the 'pain free' time on tablets

however, i would like to make him more comfortable so is there any natural remedy to try?
