I love the outdoors and everything to do in it. Fishing, Canoeing, Hiking, Photography, and Hunting are some of my favorite activities, but if it is done under the sun or stars, I love to do it. Jamie NevadaAngler1 http://angler1.com http://lasvegascanoeclub.info
Catfishing on a River System?
I am fishing the Colorado River again this Tuesday. Does anyone know why I never see any cats on the river, and only on Lake Mohave which is 30 miles downriver.
I have caught ten pound cats on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, but never even heard of one down on the river. I know there are cats on the Mississippi, and up where it snows, and ice gets on lakes, where tailraces come out of dams and such. Why are Catfish not seen upriver on the Colorado? The river flows year round at a balmy 52 degrees and that seems fairly warm to me. I do understand they prefer warmer water but wouldn't SOME live upriver?
Just asking.
Any suggestions for river cats on a river like this?

I am going out Striper Fishing on the Colorado again on Tuesday. We are putting in right at Hoover Dam and canoeing/fishing down the river 11 miles. I am not a novice fisherman by any means, but I just can't get a handle on these giant river run Striped Bass.
I know they run in packs, and are deep in the day, and come shallow at night to forage, but that is about all I can really say I know about them.
I have fished the river many many times and only caught fish at night, usually 5 to 7 pounders on cut anchovies or squid in coves, that is until November 15th. I have probably run up and down the river a hundred times and finally caught one while dragging a live squid of all things.
I cast 8" swimbaits and large Rapalas until I can't move my arms, all while trolling/dragging anchovies and squid. The second I gave up that weekend and reached for a beer, an 11.8 lb striper hit, startled the crap out of me and almost capsized my canoe.
Question:
Does anyone have any suggestions for day fishing for stripers on a river system? The water is at 52 degrees year round and flows begin about the time I put in. Usually about six feet in the day and ten feet in the evening.
I would appreciate and welcome ANY suggestions. I am at my wits end. I don't want to be wasting good water anymore.
