Illegally suspended from work (religious discrimination)?
Last week, I was suspended from my job for 3 days without pay. The reason, you ask? Because I went to church on Sunday (June 12, 2011) and was not able to attend work that day. I have never been scheduled to work on a Sunday, and just a few months prior, my shift manager told me that I (along with the entire morning crew) would have a set schedule of Monday-through-Friday-only. After learning that I was randomly scheduled on Sunday, I called my job hours in advance to let them know that I was going to church and could not work. The shift manager threatened me, saying that she would suspend me if I didn't go to work that day. Long story short, I was in fact suspended for going to church on a Sunday. The actual document reads (verbatim):
"DEVIN TRIED CALLING OFF SUNDAY 6/12 4PM-11P FOR CHURCH. THAT IS NOT EXCUSABLE. YOU WILL BE SUSPENDED FOR YOUR NEXT 3 DAYS OF WORK. YOU CAN RETURN TO WORK ON SATURDAY AT YOUR SCHEDULED TIME."
Now, I'm no lawyer or law degree guru, but is this or is this not a case of Religious Discrimination? Needless to say, my time and energy for those aforementioned 3 days was spent researching information and writing/faxing complaint letters to several bureaus. My question now is, what further steps should I take? I do NOT want to work for this company any longer, yet I am scheduled to work tomorrow (June 20, 2011) morning. I don't suggest quitting because I will most likely be looking to apply for unemployment insurance (even though being a victim of religious discrimination at the workplace is a highly legitimate reason to quit, in my opinion), and you need to be laid off or deployed (fired) to be eligible for unemployment insurance.
For the record, I am 24, living at home, no spouses, and this job is a steady paycheck, NOT in any way a career.
(Off the record: It's a franchise McDonald's restaurant in Hickory Hills, Illinois.)
Thank you all in advance!

9 AnswersLaw & Ethics10 years agoHave any other customers faced harassment, slander, & discrimination at Fry's Electronics in Tempe, AZ Arizona
On the evening of Friday July 4, 2008 (at approx. 6:15pm MST) I was verbally harassed and falsely accused by the store manager, Dave Birt, of things that I did not do. He (along with a security gaurd drone) approached me while I was in the DVD section shopping for movies. The first thing he said was "You have been making offensive inquiries to some employees." which was completely false. He then accused me of "making offensive gestures to his employees", and while I was asking him to explain himself, he said my hand movements were of "attacking nature" while all the while I was just standing there confused. I politely asked him to elaborate on these accusations and he retorted, "You seem to be confused, which is fine, but I've already told you what you did! Since you're being uncooperative, you're now tresspassing!" I pleaded with him, "You haven't told me what I did, this is harassment. You've only accused me on things I haven't done." Long story short: I made my purchase and left.
2 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoThe car wont turn off and the engine still runs?
I drive a 1991 Buick Regal Gran Sport
I drove the car home and parked it, and when I turned the key toward me to turn the car off, nothing happened. I can move the key all I want, but the engine is still running. I removed the key and put it in my pocket, yet the car is still running - engine and all. I unplugged the battery while the car was still running (and lived to tell about it). So now the battery is disconnected and the car has stopped, but technically the car is still on. What could've caused this?
