Technically oriented person. An interest in How Things Work and in How Things Got This Way drives my curiosity about technology and history both. Good (mature) science fiction plays with these issues, so I like to read that. Otherwise, I'm not very special nor interesting, except to my family and friends.
Is there an electrolysis-like method for softening hard water?
If one does not mind accumulating calcium or carbonate deposited on the electrodes, can one remove the ingredients for lime scale by passing an electric current through the water? And if yes, what are the commercial reasons why this method is not regularly used for this purpose?
1 AnswerChemistry7 years agoWhat is Czech electronic component standard/code P6? (Seen on a rectifier diode from Sova Roman Ing.)?
The catalog page on www.pselectronic.cz for catalog number 1102-4055 states "Rectifier diode 10A/1000V P6". What does the P6 mean? (Please note that I do not know the Czech language.)
1 AnswerEngineering8 years ago480 V 400 Hz resonant circuit -- Possible? How?
I have a 480V output at 400 Hz. It may be a flawed pseudo-sine wave output. I'd like to put a tank (LC) circuit on the output to make it a bit closer to a perfect sine wave. Are parts at these values commercially available? Where would I get them? Would series or parallel connection be optimum?
2 AnswersEngineering9 years agoWhat, if anything, does this Japanese-sounding name mean?
In a science-fiction story, the author imagines a world settled by both Japanese-speakers and English-speakers. The planet and many places in it have names in these two languages. I do not know any Japanese. Does the Japanese name of the world mean anything? The name is "Kibou-daini." (The English name is "New Hope 2.")
3 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhat is there about writing online that causes people to be unable to spell or punctuate?
In most questions or answers in this forum, or in comments in response to news stories, or in almost anything where people can enter text online, you can expect to find serious mistakes. These include gross misspellings, poor punctuation, absence of proper capitalization (capitalisation if you are British), question marks terminating statements and periods (full stops for Brits) terminating questions, a complete inability to correctly use or avoid apostrophes, and every other writing error known to man. Yahoo Answers thoughtfully provides Preview and Modify functions; am I the only person who uses them? What is there about the computer that causes the IQ to drop into the single digits, at least as regards writing?

I specifically want to know the difference in the cost to the merchant between credit- and debit-card usage.
2 AnswersOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoHow do US military tanks operate submerged?
Some US tanks are able to operate when underwater to a depth of about 2 meters over the turret, I think, when equipped with a special snorkel device and perhaps a periscope. I saw a half-second video clip of a tank driving underwater once; all I recall is millions of bubbles. How, in fact, is this done? How do they empty the main gun of water when they come up on the opposite bank of the river and have to fire at the enemy?
