765 AnswersCelebrities1 decade agoDo you think the global fear over swine flu is justified?
The so-called "swine flu" virus, comprised of bird, pig and human components, has caused tremendous concern around the world in recent days, with many wondering if this is the global pandemic scientists and health care professionals have been forecasting for quite some time. SARS and avian/bird flu were also thought to be pandemics when first discovered, but while both caused deaths and serious illnesses, neither developed into the catastrophe some were warning of.
What do you think? Are we right to be seriously concerned about this outbreak, or is it being blown out of proportion?

89 AnswersInfectious Diseases1 decade agoShould Canada decriminalise marijuana?
April 20th marks 4:20 (4th month, 20th day), a special event for those fighting for the legalization of marijuana or for those who smoke the occasional joint.
Opponents of the current law suggest marijuana should not be illegal but sold in controlled amounts under regulated circumstances, similar to alcohol. They suggest the government could raise money through taxation, and that it would free up police to pursue more serious drug cases.
However, there are many who feel marijuana is a mind-altering substance with potentially serious and harmful ramifications and Canada is right to keep it illegal.
What do you think? Should Canada decriminalise marijuana? If so, how do you think it should be sold and/or distributed? Or, do you feel the current laws are appropriate?

225 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoWhat are your thoughts about directed organ donation?
Critically ill infants Kaylee Wallace and Lillian O'Connor have been linked by the possibility that the former might save the latter's life. Kaylee has a congenital disease and her parents have expressed the desire that, if she dies, her heart should be transplanted into Lillian. However, this has raised numerous ethical concerns in the medical community as, typically, organ donations are done anonymously.
What do you think about directed organ donation? Should donors have the right to decide who receives their organs after death? Does this create the possibility for abuse, as organs could be distributed based on religion or race, or even sold for profit? Is a 'lottery' the only truly fair way to distribute organs?

In the wake of actress Natasha Richardson's death following a skiing accident at a Quebec resort, some are questioning the need for a new law making it compulsory for all skiers to wear helmets. Others feel helmets offer a false sense of security and don't offer true protection against head injuries. What do you think? Should snowboarders and skiers be required to wear helmets?

882 AnswersOther - Winter Sports1 decade agoHow should the Canadian justice system handle cases where the perpetrator is guilty, but mentally ill?
Canadians across the country are crying foul this week over the ruling of Vincent Li, who brutally beheaded victim Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus over the summer. The judge's verdict deemed Li 'not criminally responsible,' ordering him to spend time in a mental facility, rather than behind bars. The ruling could leave Li without a permanent criminal record, and could see him integrating into society again if he is rehabilitated. While McLean's family claims he's 'getting away with murder,' the Canadian courts insist that justice has been done. Tell us, should perpetrators of this nature be held responsible for their crimes?

197 AnswersEconomics1 decade agoShould schools and businesses close when there are severe weather conditions?
Canadian winters are typically brutal, but as a nation, we've learned to adapt. However, in cases of serious blizzards, ice storms and other severe weather conditions, schools and businesses often take the step of shutting their doors, putting safety before productivity.
Is this the right thing to do? Parents in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, thought so when a winter storm hit the region this week and several schools remained open. However, south of the border, President Barack Obama expressed disbelief last week when classes at his daughters' school were cancelled over "some ice". Overseas, the Federation of Small Businesses said the cost to Britain's economy through lost productivity following a freak snowstorm in London could be as high as three billion pounds.

122 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoIs Obama's presidency a good thing for Canadians?
According to one new poll, Canadians are bullish on the incoming U.S. President with a majority saying he'll top expectations. However, many Canadian analysts caution that his administration could influence our public and economic policies. Are these high hopes warranted, or are we overlooking the bigger picture by buying into U.S. Obama-mania?
