  • Divorce paperwork to save when ex dies?

My divorce was finalized 6 years ago, and my ex-husband died 3 years ago. What, if any, paperwork should I save? Note that he had no assets, our children are aging out of the Social Security survivor payments, and he never paid spousal support. Actually, I did, which was ironic - since he was out of work because he refused to look.

  • Places to run in Pasadena, California?

I'm looking for a good route to run while in Pasadena. I'm not used to running on cement, so I would like to find a trail, maybe in a state park, etc. I would like to keep it around 4 miles or under, but I could always shorten a route if you have a good one that is longer.

    Thanks!

  • Grandpa visiting teens for Easter - what to do?

My kids last saw their paternal grandfather almost 10 years ago. His choice - when he's visited the west coast, he's been careful to explain to me and his son how busy he was, no time for family visits.

Now they are almost adults, and grandpa wants to "get to know them" and is visiting. We'll be seeing him soon, and he wants us to do something special. So I've got a 70-plus couple and two teenagers who are supposed to do something together.

Weather is cold, wet, rainy, so anything outdoor is out. Any ideas on what we can do?

  • What would you do with this tenant?

Here are the basic facts, what would you do?

    1. This is a house with a small studio apartment attached.

    2. Tenant is a single male, but girlfriend moved in with him.

    3. Girlfriend gets into serious accident, is hospitalized and needs surgery. No health insurance.

    4. Tenant stops paying rent, presumably because of his girlfriend's expenses.

Would you insist on the tenant scrape up the rent, or let him slide?

    Other factors:

    5. Landlady is a single mom, no child support, currently laid off due to these hard times. The rental income is very important for covering the mortgage.

    6. It would probably take several months to find a replacement tenant.

  • Wedding blessing for two grooms? and toasts?

My brother and his long time partner are getting married this weekend, hooray!

All of the family has been asked to bring a blessing to their wedding ceremony. Most of the traditional ones talk about "starting their new life together" and things like that.

What I'd like to do is honor their already long (going on 20 years) loving relationship, between thick and thin, surviving the disapproval of a still-too-large segment of society, and to send our best wishes for the rest of their lives.

    Any suggestions would be welcome!

And while you're at it, know any good toasts? I'll have to do some of those, too, and I think I've only done that once or twice in my life.

  • No DVD drive on my PC!?

The tablet we got came with nifty extra software. But it is on a DVD, and I have no DVD drive.

Technical support suggested I get a 6 GB thumb drive, find a computer with a DVD drive, download it to the thumb drive and then upload it to my home computer. He said I could use a 2 GB drive and transfer in chunks. Wonderful.

I was wondering if there was a safe website, that didn't involve any software installation, where I could upload the files from a distant computer and download it at home.

  • Food for teen girl sleepover?

OK, I may host 5-8 girls, age 13 to 15 at my house for a sleepover. Besides chocolate, what are some other essential foods?

As a mom, I have to add this in: Cool yet not too unhealthy would be preferred.

  • If a fire was approaching your house, what would you try to take with you?

    Other assumptions:

You have a regular sedan, not a big truck or anything. And you already have the people and pets loaded in.

  • What Anime/Manga characters should we be?

My otaku is going to a couple of Anime and Manga cons. She has her cosplay up and ready to go.

But is there something the non-fangirls can wear to keep in the spirit of things? This would be a matronly type and a nearly teen girl. We have one kimono, I was thinking about wearing it over black street clothes, and then trying to rustle up a version of Kiki (from Kiki's Delivery Service) for the tween.

There is also some debate going on exactly *what* color Kiki's dress is. What do you think?

    Any other simple suggestions?

  • 15 and 12 year old going alone to Matchbox Twenty concert?

My 15 year old dd just won two tickets to a Matchbox Twenty concert. She'd like to take her 12 year old sister.

    That would mean that either:

1). They would go alone (I'd stay somewhere close, with cell phones).

2). I'd pony up about $100 for a ticket, escort them to their seats, and go sit wherever else my ticket is for. (There is assigned seating only.)

    3). Something I haven't thought of yet.

They are both responsible, sensible, reliable - but young!

What would you do in this case?

  • Our kids must help dad move?

I don't know if I'm biased or not, what do you think?

My ex is moving. He doesn't have any friends (basically for the same reasons we divorced), and he won't hire help.

Since he doesn't have a job (another reason we're divorced), our daughters (11 and 14) go to his place after school. He has been putting them to work - packing his stuff and cleaning the house (they don't have much at his house besides a bunk bed and one dresser).

Both of them must help load and unload the truck, and the 14 year old must help carry the furniture. When I pick them up after I get off work, they are tired, hungry and have all their homework to do.

To be fair: When I moved last, they had to help pack their stuff and some of the house stuff, but I also had a lot of adult help help. They didn't have to move furniture. It was also during the summer.

What really bothers me is (1) the 14 year old carrying sometimes heavy furniture, (2) He won't let them do homework, just pack and clean.
