  • Using a spring scale how does the measured weight of an object change with time of day?

I assume that a spring based scale measures the force between the object and the surface of the Earth. I wonder if the forces that are involved in causing tides in the ocean are large enough to be measurable by a scale that is accurate to half a pound when measuring something close to 200 pounds. I realize that the measured force of gravity may be different at different locations due to dense mineral deposits near a location or distance from the equator. I live at almost exactly latitude 47 and am interested in how the measured value of g might change over time where I live. If the moon is a factor I realize that factor might be different from day to day with a periodicity that is independent of the length of a day but I am not sure if g changes enough to measure.

  • Why do the faces look fake?

There is an advertisement on television for a product called ocuvite. There are a few faces in the advertisement that seem to be fake to me. I can not put my finger on what it is about the faces that makes them feel fake to me. The eyes are all blue like Paul Newman's. I have tried to hold my hand out to block the eyes and the face still has a fake feeling.

Anyone have an idea about what is wrong with the images?

  • Are the comparisons of US and other countries' students statistically valid?

In the 1970's similar statements were being made. At that time practically all students in America were included but in most other countries only those students who were selected for specialized training were included. I worked for the Educational Coordinating Council of Oregon as a researcher in 1974,1975. The ECC of Oregon was jointly funded by the federal government and the state of Oregon. My primary assignment was to predict enrollment at all (both public and private) schools in Oregon. This included kindergarten through all post high-school institutions including colleges, Universities as well as career education institutions. I do not know if the statements being made today are any more valid than the similar statements made in the 1970's.

  • How long would a list of primes need to be, to be of interest?

I asked a similar question a couple month's ago and got only one response that mentioned the largest number that had been proved to be prime. I am contemplating work on creating a large list of primes and do not know how big it needs to be before it would be of interest to the mathematical community. The longest list I have found on the web had about 50 million prime numbers. I have not done any extensive research but I believe I have a method that can easily exceed that number in a reasonable amount of time on a Windows 2000 based computer. I assume that the list stops there because that is a round number that results in a prime that is about as big as a 32 bit computer word can represent.

The largest number currently found to be prime is very special but an extraordinarily large number of primes less than that number exist which have not been proved to be prime.

  • When will the order of questions be fixed?

When I go to the Arts & Humanities category and the subcategory philosophy and look for the list to be in the order from least often answered to most often answered questions the list is not correctly counting the number of answers that have been given to each question. A number of the questions are listed as having had no answers given and when the question is selected there have been many answers already given.

  • What is an "Office Psychopath".?

I have seen the expresion "Office Psychopath" several times.

I orginally thought that the questioner was disappointed in somebody at work. That is all the expresion was conveying to me. After seeing "Office Psychopath" appear several times I now am not sure whether there is a definition for this expresion beyond frustration on the part of the questioner or not.

  • How do I become a teachers aid when I retire in a couple three years.?

I expect to retire in the next three years from a career in computing. I originally wanted to be a teacher when I went to college 40 years ago. For financial reasons I found a different profession. I now would like to teach but the idea of going back to school to get a masters degree is daunting. I believe I would like to be a classroom aid in a local elementary school. I live in Seattle Washington.
