Married with three kids (including boy/girl twins). I live in North East of England. Time-served pipefitter, qualified plumber. • Can you help with a bit of general research on various roles in the Tudor/Elizabethan navy?

I am particularly looking for the duties, responsibilities, skills, and training of the Coxswain, Boatswain (and their mates). Nothing heavy just a bit of background for a potential fictional character.

(I wasn't sure if here or "History" would be the best place, so I asked in both :D)

  • How many would crew a "small frigate"?

I am trying to do some research on Sir Humphrey Gilbert and would like a little more information on the ship on which he (presumed) died - the "Squirrel"

All I can find is that it was a 9 or 10 ton "small frigate". How many crew would such a ship have and what sorts of positions/roles would they hold? (Or does anyone know of a similar sized ship with more info to use as a reference?)

  • Does David Tennant have a connection with Autism?

I caught a part of his cover slot for Jonathan Ross' radio show and he made a comment about autism that struck me (having a connection myself) as quite insightful for a "layman" and it piqued my interest. Maybe he has a relative with the condition? (I couldn't find anything on the 'net.)

  • Hot on one side, cold on the other?

Did anyone see Heston Blumethal's Christmas special? (Not that it matters if you did or didn't it only puts this in context.) he served mulled wine that was "hot on one side [of the glass] and cold on the other"?! How bonkers is that? And he wouldn't reveal the secret! Do any food experts have any ideas how he did it? Is it something you could try at home or would you need some highly specialised equipment or ingredients?

  • Do you sometimes despair at the standard of written English?

liek wot we see al tha tim on hear????!!!!

I used to teach in primary schools and I would not accept some of the grammar and spelling we see on here from 9 or ten year olds never mind from teenagers or even adults. What do you think is the primary cause of this? The Internet or texting, or something else?

Its more of an open discussion than a question really, but it does concern me.
