Can I say my story is 'award winning'?
I wrote a story that won a local writer's competition a few months ago. I'm getting it ready to post online and would like to say, in the description, that it's award winning (ie, "an award winning short story by author X").
Is this a correct statement, or would it be misleading?
The local competition was organised by several library branches and had around a hundred entries, and the mayor spoke at the award ceremony. It wasn't huge, but it wasn't a tiny event, either.
Thank you for your advise! :)
5 AnswersBooks & Authors7 years agoWhat makes forex trading so difficult?
I'm trying to learn a little bit about forex trading, but I've only just begun, so please excuse the stupid question. :)
I've heard that 90% of people who try forex trading lose everything in the first six months. Why is this? If you make a poor bid and it loses value, couldn't you just hold onto it (for days or weeks if needed) until it improves in value again? Surely people don't deliberately sell stocks at a loss?
I'm probably missing something very obvious, haha. Thanks for your help!

The webcomic is called WhoKilledClaireCace - add a dot and a com at the end for the link.
It's still new, but I'm looking to improve any way I can.
What looks off about the drawings to you? What could be changed? What bits (if any) do you like?
Thanks for the feedback!

What looks off about the drawings to you? Obviously the colouring is a bit dodgy, but any other suggestions you can make would be very appreciated.
Thank you!
1 AnswerDrawing & Illustration9 years agoHow does my webcomic's site layout look?
www.whokilledclairecace.com
I've been having some issues with things displaying properly in IE. I think I've fixed most of the bugs, but could you have a look around and see if there are any issues I've missed?
I'd also really appreciate some critique from people using other browsers. How does the site layout look? If you could suggest something to change, what would it be? So far there's only the main page, the comic pages and the archive, but once I've got the layout right I'll be adding more content.
Thanks for your time!
2 AnswersComics & Animation9 years agoWhat Movie is this Scene From? (Horror)?
I can remember this scene, but not which movie it came from. Can you tell me?
A woman is lying in bed. She feels her husband lie down next to her and she starts talking to him. From memory, I think it was a sort of apology and explanation for why she'd been so unhappy/stressed recently. It's a very tender scene, but the husband doesn't reply.
Then she suddenly sees that the light under the bathroom door is on, and a shadow is moving inside. She whispers to her husband "there's someone in there", but he doesn't respond. She panics and sits up to look at him, but the place where he'd been is empty. The door to the bathroom then opens and the husband comes out.
She says, "I thought you just lay down next to me!" and he says something like "that's impossible, I was in the bathroom." She puts her hand on the place and argues "it's still warm" and he says, "of course, I only just got up."
I think that's where the scene ends.
From the feeling of it, the movie was a horror/thriller that was made not all that long ago.
Can you tell me which movie it's from?
1 AnswerMovies9 years agoWhat's this song? (popular in the 90s?)?
This is a really stupid question, but my neighbours started playing a song that I remember from a while ago and I'm hoping I can figure out its name.
The words were too muffled to hear; all I could catch was the 'ooo-ooo-ooh, woo-ooo-ooh' in the chorus. It was repeated twice each chorus, with other lyrics in between the repertition.
The song was sung by a man, and the chorus's notes were fairly high. It was a fast-beat and uplifting song that would have been popular in the 80s or 90s... or maybe even earlier? I just remember it played on the 'classic mix' radio a lot when I was a child (90s).
I know this isn't much to go on, but if you have some suggestions, I'd be very grateful!!
2 AnswersRock and Pop9 years agoImport laws - live plants?
Hi! I'm hoping to import some marmia moss balls (an aquatic plant). I can't get any locally but a seller from Ebay offers to ship them internationally. I know customs restricts what can be brought into the country but I checked their list (http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4369.asp) and they don't mention plants at all.
Would it be safe to buy them? What are the laws regarding this? (I live in Australia, the balls would be coming from Hong Kong I believe). Thanks!
4 AnswersLaw & Ethics10 years agoRegistering a Business Name That's Already Registered In Another State?
Hi! I'm looking to register a business name for an online shop in NSW. I've been reading about it on the government's site but got confused about this part:
"A business name is the name under which your business trades and it needs to be registered in every state where trading takes place."
I searched their database and the name I would like to register has been registered in another state. Does that mean I can still register it for here, or do I need to find another name?
Also, the name that's registered in the other state combines two of the words into one. For instance, I'm interested in registering "Blue Fish Studios", and they've taken "Bluefish Studios". Will this make a difference at all?
Again, this will be a small business operating online. I'm definitely going to be contacting a government department about it, but I wanted to have an idea of whether I could use this name or not first.
Thanks very much for any advice you can give me.
2 AnswersSmall Business10 years agoBest-Known Serial Killers?
I'm writing a report on famous serial killers and how they murdered and disposed of their victims. Some names I have are Harold Shipman (Dr Death - killed over 218 patients), John Buntin (Bodies in the Barrel - 12 victims), and Ted Bundy (at least 30 victims).
What other killers can you think of? References to further reading are also very appreciated.
11 AnswersOther - Society & Culture10 years agoCanister filter setup - position of the pipes?
Hi! I'm setting up my new 4ft tank today, and have a question which is probably very silly.
I bought a canister filter which I've almost completely set up. The output pipe (which is a long pipe with holes in it) sticks onto the side of the tank near the top, and I have that assembled and ready to go - but I can't work out if the holes go above or below the water.
I thought it was supposed to be above, but now that I've filled the tank up there's not much room for it. Should they be underwater instead? Will that cause any problems?
And if it IS supposed to be above water, will it be loud once it's running?
Thanks for the help!
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoGood Thriller / Horror Films?
Hi! I'm looking for some good thriller / suspense / horror films. Other movies I love include:
Sixth Sense
The Village
Sleepy Hollow
Signs
I don't like slasher films or movies with excessive violence for the sake of violence. Also, the better the plot, the happier I am!
What would you recommend based on that? :)
Thanks in advance!
8 AnswersMovies1 decade agoNewspapers in Australia, 1942? Around the time of when Singapore fell?
I'm doing research for a book but I'm having trouble finding the information I need. The story takes place in February 1942, at the time of when Singapore fell and 15,000 Aussie troops were taken as prisoners of war.
What I need is a reference for newspapers around that time - specifically:
1) Would the news have been published the next day (Monday the 16th)?
2) Would it have been a front-page article (I'm assuming it would have, but best to check)
3) Was Singapore's fall expected, or would it have been a shock to people when they heard about it?
4) How major was the event compared to other war news?
Any help is very appreciated. Thank you!
1 AnswerMedia & Journalism1 decade agoName of a red bird for a novel?
Hey,
I'm planning a book centered on spies in the 1940s. I need to name one of the female characters, and I'd like to name her after a bird that's red, or contains red. She's strong, quiet and intelligent but mostly cold and unfeeling. The red is to symbolise a streak of passion/insanity that she hides from everyone, including herself. The bird name will be her code title, not given name.
I considered the cardinal, but decided against it as only the male is red, and it's too agressive to represent the character well. I'd be grateful if you could let me know what other female birds contain red, and if they have any symbolism or folklore attached to them. Many thanks!
