What's the name of that French stew you keep adding ingredients to?
It can go on for days, adding ingredients as the volume gets low, but it usually has white beans and sausages, and I've made it with kale and carrots and funny-shaped noodles... I think the name starts with a "C", but my memory has taken the morning off. Thanks.
1 AnswerEthnic Cuisine1 decade agoWhat does the Japanese family name Takaya mean?
I know that a kanji romanized as "taka" means "high" or "tall." Is there more than one kanji for "takaya?" There's also a personal name "Takaya," a boys' name - is the family name different?
Thanks!
1 AnswerLanguages1 decade agoCan you help identify a science fiction book in which tiny particles invade and leave messages?
I read this story about 30 years ago in grade school, about a boy who gets sick from an infestation of dust-sized metallic objects that start piling up everywhere. He helps figure out their message (kind of like "Contact" meets newspaper puzzles). It must have been a novel or "junior reader" novella, probably from the school library rather than assigned. It might just have hooked me for Sci-Fi, but I can't recall the title or author. Thanks!
1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade agoseeking Latin American Spanish idiom for "raffle drawing" ?
... or a workaround. It's for a flier at my son's school, and the announcement concerns the time of the raffle drawing, so it could read that a winner will be chosen, but I'm not sure that "selectar un ganador" sounds right... Ayúdenme, por favor!
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoHow heavy should I expect traffic to be around Monterey CA on Labor Day weekend?
I've got a 2 1/2 hour drive that could turn into a getaway ender if 101 gets too backed up. Anyone have experience driving around Monterey CA *on a Labor Day weekend*? Thanks in advance.
2 AnswersSan Francisco1 decade agoCan you help me translate these instructions into Spanish?
The instructions in English read like this:
Say "plata"; now say it without the "ta"
Someone has writen the following translation:
Di "plata"; ahora dila quita "ta"
I thought it should be:
Diga la palabra "plata"; ahora dígala quitando "ta"
I recognize that "diga" corresponds to plural 2d person, and "di" could be appropriate here. Otherwise, how do the two translations measure up?
Por favor, ¡dígame también cómo vienes a saber tanto! Gracias.

1 AnswerVideo & Online Games1 decade agoHow do Cambodians pronounce the name of the waterway "Tonlé Sap"?
Is there an accurate online resource? Can you write it in international phonetics? I'm especially interested in the pattern of emphasis, if any. I don't even know if the Khmer language has emphasis.
Thanks!

Or can a stock car have both a steel cage and a roll bar?

I'm looking for the species name or the common name, please. And if you don't mind, tell me how you know - I may have a follow up question. I've seen a couple of contradictory references in English language works, and I don't read much Italian.
1 AnswerHistory1 decade agoIs shield-shaped mark on sidewalk an indicator of a lot line?
I live on a street in Alameda County, CA with houses dating back to around 1930.
There's a 4" wide, roughly shield-shaped outline with (partially obscured) lettering, stamped into the sidewalk in front of the house. The shield comes to a point around where we think a lot line is, but we don't know how surveyors around 1930 in Alameda County, CA left traces of their work.
Any insight? Does this sound like what you see where you live? Are you a surveyor, and if so, what, if any, permanent marks do you leave at a site?
Thanks!
2 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoBeen to Cambodian floating town?
I'd like to hear what you thought about traveling to a town or city floating on the Tonlé Sap in Cambodia. How did you get there? What was it like? Please use relevant place names so I can follow up with more research. And if you have pictures on a travel blog or that you can otherwise share, I'd be interested. Many thanks!
1 AnswerOther - Asia Pacific1 decade agowhat's the scam? emails requesting product price quotes?
I get at least one email a day asking for prices of items my company doesn't sell.
The sending addresses are all ISPs like earthlink.net or gmail.com, not real company addresses.
The products are office equipment, generally ink cartridges or similar.
I visited scambusters but couldn't find a match.
Anyone know what the scammers are up to? Or is this just a juvenile prank?
Cheers.

6 AnswersOptical1 decade agoChristmas wreath instead of tree?
I'm weighing the appeal of not having a tree cut down, and I don't want either a plastic tree (who recycles those?) or a live tree (my landscape needs are for shorter, less thirsty trees).
I have two small kids, and I think they're already fully indoctrinated into the tree sect.
Has anyone else switched to wreaths, or found success with another substitute for a dying tree inside at Christmas?
Cheers.
18 AnswersChristmas1 decade agoGot any pointers for leveling books on Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading scale?
I created a basic worksheet for the levels A-M, but it's highly subjective, and Fountas & Pinnell don't give any milestones for levels N-S.
1 - If you level K-5 books, what to you do about the subjectivity of GR levels A-M and the lack of guidance on N-S?
2 - If you have a more detailed reference work than Guided Reading, by Fountas & Pinnell, please tell me the title and author so I can buy it, too.
Thanks in advance.
4 AnswersTeaching1 decade agoWhat would be a good image to represent the concept of local government in a civics textbook?
The well's running dry... I'm revising a book, and I already have a city hall in another setting, and the current version has only a city skyline, which doesn't do it for me.
This image would begin a chapter on how local government works, so it should actually illustrate local government.
I've been struggling to find an image of a city council meeting I could buy or use for free.
