  • Modem not working with switch, but works with router?

Right now, my setup has the modem connected to my wireless router, which connects to a gigabit switch by a gigabit port on the router to the 1 port on the swich, which connects all the computers in the house that use LAN. This works fine. I tried to cut out the middle man to the switch by plugging the modem into the switch in the first port, then connecting the router to the switch by some other port. I could connect to the internet via the wireless, but some, if not all of the people in my house that were connected to the switch by ethernet cords couldn't connect. Can you tell me what went wrong? I have to replace the router and I'd like to avoid paying a premium for a gigabit router.

  • Valentine's Day: so bad it's good, or just bad?

I want to take a girl out to a movie, but there's nothing that great playing at my local theater. I've heard miserable reviews for Valentine's Day, and I'm wondering if we could actually have fun just laughing at the movie (think Plan 9 From Outer Space or Troll 2). For those who have seen it: you you think it's bad enough to be good, or is it just 90 minutes of pain?

  • Is minoring in Electrical Engineering worth it?

I'm a math major going into my sophomore year. I was contemplating majoring in both Math and Physics, but I decided that the courseload is too limiting, and I won't be able to take random fun classes for the sake of learning. At the same time, I'm thinking that having an education in something practical like electrical engineering could look good on a resume. Furthermore, it might help me decide if I want to go into EE. I intend to go to grad school, not necessarily in math or engineering. But I have two issues: 1) do minors count for anything? 2) While I like math and don't mind working hard, I don't have the personality (or lack thereof) of an engineer, and might find that kind of work totally boring. Are my concerns justified? Am I ignoring anything? Should I drop everything and become a doctor or lawyer?

  • Can someone explain how this situation works in special relativity?

OK, so let's say there's twin brothers, Al and Bert. Let's say Al goes off in a rocket at .9c away from Bert for two years of Bert's time. When Al comes back, he'll be younger than Bert is. I'm fine with that. But now let's say that Al stays put and Bert shoots off in the opposite direction at .9c for two years of his time. Wouldn't Bert, when he comes back from his trip, be younger than Al? But aren't the two situations exactly the same (since velocity is relative)? Obviously, they can't both be younger than the other brother.

  • Can I get a reccomendation for a good alto or tenor saxophone?

Last year in band I learned how to play alto saxophone a little bit. The sax was a rental though, and for the past year I have not practiced at all. I want to get back into it, and am considering buying my own sax. I kind of like the sound of a tenor sax more, but I chose alto because I didn't want to lug the tenor to school and back every day. I'm open to suggestions for either kind of saxophone. I want something that will last me a long while. In terms of timbre, I guess I'd prefer something bright (trebley, clear, as opposed to a bassy, mellow, dark sound), but not excessively sharp or screechy.

    Thanks!

  • What guitar does Andrew Langer of the Redwalls play?

I once saw a Redwalls show and the tone of Andrew's Gibson hollow body was amazing. I'd like to know what the model is, or, at least, what the pickups are, since it sounds great. It's pictured here, if it would help identify the guitar.

  • Can I get vitamin A toxicity from vitamin pills?

So, I've started taking centrums to get my daily vitamins, but lately I think I've been getting a little too much beta-carotene. My pretty yellow-orange fingers can attest to it. So, anyway, I know beta-carotene can be flushed out by the kidneys since it's water soluble, but 70% of the vitamin A in the pill is not beta-carotene, which means it's probably retinol or some other variety of fat-soluble Vitamin A. The bottle lists 90% daily value per pill. I'm wondering if I might be getting too much fat soluble vitamin A and if I could get Hypervitaminosis A from taking the pills. I'd rather not have to stop taking them, so if someone could tell me if it's safe or not that would be great.

  • Why did LBJ get so involved in Vietnam and why did he stay there, and how was it relevant politically?

I'm doing a project on the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and in my research have reasoned the only really significant divide in the Democratic party was over Vietnam. What I want to know is: why did we go into vietnam in the first place, why was LBJ so determined to stay in Vietnam (as in how was it politically advantageous to have that position, both when he came into office and in 1968), and how would leaving Vietnam affect him and/or Humphrey politically? I generally know the Domino theory idea, but I really think there are other reasons. Things were looking dim and so many people thought that we should pull out despite domino theory. I think there was some political reason LBJ and Humphrey wanted to stay. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How could Buchanan have prevented civil war?

When Lincoln was elected, South Carolina and eventually six other states seceded from the Union before Lincoln took office and four more after that. But Buchanan is often harshly criticized for not doing anything to prevent the war. (It was cited as the worst presidential mistake in all of US History, see http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-02-18... He sat and waited for some hope of reconciliation. But what could he do? For one much of the standing army was out west controlling Indians, there was nothing in the Constitution tha said he could attack another state for secession (though Jackson did establish a precedent earlier, and got a hell of a lot of slack for it), and if he did attack, it would only start the Civil War earlier and it would make the North the aggressor. Still, people say he could have done better. What could he have done?

  • How do find the surface area of a partially filled sphere?

I need to know how to find the surface area of a partially filled sphere/sphere segment/sphere with a section cut off for a project. I know volume, just not surface area. A formula would be great.

  • Why don't they salt roads before a snowstorm?

It would just save time right? Or would it be detrimental to cars? Do they salt roads in advance already?
