  • Where can I find a historical atlas tracing the evolution of forms of government?

Several years ago I stumbled on a website of alternate atlasses. One of them tracked types of government (monarchy, limited democracy, military dictatorship, etc) around the world for the past 500 years or so in (I believe) 10 or 25 year increments. I tried finding it today and failed. I also remember the site having an atlas of middle earth. Anyone familiar with it?

  • Why do Coke and Pepsi allow bottlers to put their logos on cans (or bottles)?

Conventional wisdom is that the labels are for tracking purposes, but the big soda companies actually track defective cans using the bar codes on them. Likewise, while the government does mandate that the bottler's name and address appear on the can, they do not require that the company's logo be present. It's also been suggested that bottling companies have proprietary technology that soda companies require, and this gives them enough leverage to label the cans. In actuality, Coke and Pepsi already do some of their bottling in-house, so clearly any proprietary technology is not very important to quality bottling. Also, the sheer number of bottlers suggests that any attempt by one to extort concessions from the soda companies would just lead to that bottler being replaced, especially since cans have become a commodity product. So, why are the bottlers be allowed to "advertise" on the cans?
