Betta fish actually exploded...? (Warning: somewhat graphic picture)?

I just discovered my sister's Betta fish evidently dead, sitting motionless at the bottom of his bowl. Disturbingly, he appears to have literally exploded, with a brown substance I can only assume is feces or fish innards extending out from the bottom of his body like something out of Alien. The strangest part is that he showed no real signs of distress, bulging, or illness as recently as a few hours ago. For future reference, can somebody identify the cause of death? Also, I've attached a photo, but beware, it's pretty graphic. The white ich-looking stuff only appeared after his death, so I don't think it's that either.
