Would work colleagues (doctors in a hospital) who were friendly use the first and patronymic? I know that in 19th century Russian literature the first name and patronymic was used, but what about in the 1940s?

I am teaching Korean teens (boys and girls) over the Internet, and I have to find a novel for them to read. NO Harry Potter, and no vampire novels. The book should be fairly recent, and should give these Koreans an idea about what life is like for teens in North America. The goal is to get them reading English, and at the same time, allow them to learn something about another culture. Something well-written would be good. They have varying degrees of English proficiency, ranging from fair to good.
