  • Got a Promotion And Raise By Resigning?

So I've been at my current company for about 14 months, I recently was offered a new position by a company I worked for in the past that offered a 20% raise over my current salary. I wasn't looking for a new job but it fell in my lap.

I'm a key player at my current company designing a new automation platform, a few months ago I asked to move into a management position that recently opened up, but I was told they are going outside the company.

Anyway, when I came in with my letter to resign it was escalated to the CEO of the company, and now they are offering me the management position and a raise to match the offer by the other company in an attempt to keep me.

What I'm worried about is that they are going to try and find someone to replace me and let me go once they find him/her. I wasn't looking but I don't want them to fee like I've checked out or betrayed the company and they have decided to keep me for a while so they can fire me later.

I was reading online and came across this "Many recruiters and HR professionals note that employees that take counteroffers usually leave or are pushed out in a few months afterward anyway"

  • Career Advice Moving Into IT Management?

I am currently 32 and have been in the IT industry since I was 19 years old working at IBM. Technically I am very accomplished with a long track record on the technical side. That being said I feel like I am ready to move into management and I am torn how to go about it.

Currently I am on a contract for a very large multi-billion dollar international company. I was brought in to help the company operationalize emerging technology such as mongodb, cassandra, hadoop etc.. I am helping the system architect team revolutionize the way they / we handle automation, scalability, monitoring etc.. I've only bee in this position for a few months and they pay me well, every well ($130k). Everyone is very impressed with me and my manager who reports to the CTO brags about me to everyone he meets. Which is great... but... I'm not sure there is any chance I would move into a management position. I know I will have a job here and get paid well to be the computer nerd that I am.. but I want to move into management..

I've recently been contacted by a company for whom a CFO I know is now employed. He has recommended me for the position of IT Manager and I would oversee 4 people. The company is significantly smaller then my current position and would be a technical manager where I would not just manage people but also assist the VP with the direction of the operations organization (monitoring, auto-scalability, devops, automation, cloud, etc..). I'm not sure if I should take this position primarily because they aren't doing anything big, they are a simple SEO company (which IMO has a bad rap in the IT industry) and host localized content for big multi-national corporations. Technically it would be a big step down considering my resume is filled with projects for some of the most well known companies around the world, but it would be the chance to manage people for the first time.

    Any advice here?

  • Dodge Ram 1500 Transmission Rebuild Cost?

I have a Dodge Ram 1500 2000 and the transmission started making a squeaking noise and didn't want to shift out of first gear. The mechanic told me the lining came off the band for second gear and there was metal shavings in the transmission fluid. He took it apart for me and gave me a laundry list of parts which needs to be replaced. He quotes me $2,300, parts, labor and install w/ a 2 year unlimited mile warranty.

It isn't that I don't trust him it just seems expensive... I actually believe that he knows the problem the mechanic is a guy my friend knows and has done excellent work for him in the past.

How many fortune cookies does the company need to make for there to be a 92% chance that at least one cookie will have a fortune. Please don't make me solve for ^n. There is a way to do it by solving for 1, 2, 3, etc.. but I can't figure out how to solve for 1 then 2, etc..

  • What is the MOST you can make as a Linux and VMware system engineer?

Currently I make $110,000 / year as a Linux / Vmware architect. Is this the ceiling for this position? Do I have to start consulting independently again such as 1099 or corp-to-corp before I can make in the 200k range?

  • Should I ask for a raise if..?

I have been made a job offer for 10% more then what I am currently making. It isn't that I don't like where I work, as always there are the usual frustrations. I am the only person in my department and design a core part of our "software solution" although I am not a developer. Currently the company I work for is small but we haven't been growing much, we have some HUGE GIGANTIC deals on the table but I'm loosing faith that we will win them..

A new company has offered me a job for 10% more then I currently make, I'm wondering if I should just give my notice, or give my current employer a chance to counter. I'm about 99% sure they will counter, but I worry that will make for a hostile work environment. Due to the fact that I'm a key member of our company is it wrong to ask for a raise and hold a job offer over my employers head?

We where suppose to get raises and bonuses at the beginning of the year but we haven't received them. We are told we will get them, but no date, no other info.. Hmm after reading this I'm not sure I see the positive about my current employer, except I think leaving them will put them in an even worse situation... and there is a small chance we can land these big deals which could change the face of the company..

  • Regis University vs University of Phoenix?

I am a 10 year IT professional and I'm looking to go back to school for an MBA. I live in Colorado and close to Regis University not only do they offer online classes but they also offer on-campus classes. However, I work with or have worked with many professionals who have graduated from Phoenix University. I was wondering what the "Internet" though about this subject? I keep reading that some employers have a negative perspective of Phoenix University then I read that CEOs of Fortune 500 companies have graduated from there?

    Thanks.

  • Will an MBA Help My Career?

Currently I'm a Linux and VMware architect with about 10 years of experience. I dropped out of H.S when I was 16 and haven't looked back (I have my GED). I have an extensive resume with many top companies on it, and I'm a very in demand professional. However it seems my salary has capped at about $100,000 - $120,000 / year which is good but I am considering going back to school and get a BS then a MBA in business hopping that could land me into a CIO roll one day and a larger salary.

So do you think an MBA will help?

  • Where Can I Get Low Cost Goggles Locally?

I just got LASIK and my Doc said I can keep working out but to work out with some goggles so I don't get sweat in my eyes and don't try and rub them. I have those plastic ones they gave me but I can't see that well out of them and I have to tape them to my face.

I figured I could get some cheep ones at Wal-Mart but they don't seem to have them in stock since its off season, I checked Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Authority but they run in the $40 range and I didn't want to pay that much. Any other ideas I am not thinking of?

  • Why Aren't You Tea Party Activists Against Outsourcing?

Considering that outsourcing our middle class jobs is a MUCH bigger issue then illegal immigration why is everyone up in arms over immigration law/reform?

Could it be that the rich Republicans who brainwash you don't want to look at the "real" issues. These rich Republicans are making billions of dollars a year by moving jobs to countries like India and the Philippians.

  • What Does Guest Laundry Mean?

Ok, so I'm saying at at Marriott Hotel In San Jose, my trip has been extended probably a week and I only brought a weeks worth of clothes.. I was reading the guest "manual" and it said they offer "for your convenience, a laundry bad and dry cleaning list are provided in each room. No service on Sunday or holidays". Sale day service if articles are received at the front desk by 8:00am"

Does this mean I can leave my laundry and they will do it? Like my socks and t-shirts and stuff? Even my underwear? I know I can call the front desk but I don't want to sound dumb.

They also offer coin operated washers and dryers, so I can do my own laundry but if they are gonna have the maids do it, HELL YEA!

  • Can I Make It In San Francisco?

I am a highly experienced Linux / VMware systems engineer with 10 years of experience. Currently I live in the Denver metro area and make approx $115,000 / year and I am considering moving to San Francisco. I think I can land a job in the $130,000 - $150,000 / year range and I'm wondering if I can maintain a similar life style to what I have in Denver.

Currently I live in a 4 bedroom house with 2 bathrooms but I only use two rooms one for my bedroom and one for my office + my living room.. I can probably get by with a 2 bedroom apartment, I pay $1050/mo for this arrangement.. I figure in San Fran for a 2 bedroom place I'm looking at like $2500?? Is that about right?

I need a place to stay, standard utilities such as water, electricity, internet and cable (cable is really optional).. I really want to stay in a nice part of San Francisco.. I have two cars one SUV and a Chrysler 300... Since I live in Colorado I need a 4x4 but I figure if I move to San Francisco I can sell the SUV and keep my Chrysler... (the SUV is paid off and I can probably sell it for about $5000)

As far as debt goes I have only the car payment for my Chrysler 300 which is kinda high nearly $400/mo... but besides standard cell phone, utilities and rent I have no other bills, no kids, nothing...

I do however like to go out 4-5x per week, with this small over view of my life style can I make it in San Francisco?

  • Am I Her Sugar Daddy?

So I meet this female who was a stripper in the strip club, and she danced for me a few times etc... We talked about doing an online website for her and stuff (I can do web design, app development etc..)

Anyway, we txed a few times and nothing really came of it, one day I was driving down the street and she saw me in my new Chrysler 300 and screamed at me... I pulled over and ended up getting her number again and took her out to dinner that night..

She was having some problems with her new car and I lent her my explorer (since I have two cars) for a few days, she brought it back in perfect condition and all was good.. then I've been helping her with rides here and there, one night I was taking her to work and apparently they suspended her for smoking weed in the bathroom (which I don't care, I useto be a big pot head myself)... so we left the club, I told her, hey if you can't work tonight come dance for me at my house I'll give u $200.. and we'll get all ****** up too (on liquor only) so she comes over we get drunk and she dances for me.. I end up eating her out and stuff and she was like I never do this, I haven't been with anyone since my baby's dad left me 2 years ago.. But I feel comfortable with you, you don't make me feel like a peice of meat (she tells me)...

Anyway I'm all wasted and I'm like baby you should be my woman, she agrees and I end up letting her drive my truck again... she either comes over or I go over to her place every day and we hang out (its been like a week now) and cuddle etc..

She unfortunately had a really hard life, grew up in foster care, dad in prison etc.. she is pretty dumb, and I'm a very successful systems architect (and pretty smart over all) .. she always tells me how impressed she is with how smart I am and asked if I would help her get her GED and help teach her son to be smart like me (again he is only 2, so I figured I'd get the hooked on phonics for pre-K and do it with him).. Her life is pretty low drama actually there aren't any men around or call when I'm arround, honestly I think she resents most men because they have used her a lot.. she is a stripper and most men treat her like a peice of meat..

Even though she is really sweet to me and "acts" like she wants a better life for her and her son, I can't escape the feeling she is around because I let her use my car.. we don't have sex ( well except for the one night about a week ago when I ate her out and paid her to dance for me) we don't even tongue kiss (she is sick right now I got her sick I've been fighting a cold for a few days and I gave it to her)..

Although she says she wants to be with me and is very nice to me, she also has her guard up with me a lot... so I can't tell if she gives me enough attention to keep using my car or if she really wants me to take it slow with her.. and show her I'm around for more then here perfect **** and *** (which I want to be, but her **** are amazing and her *** is perfect!) ...

I mean I'd let her use my car if she came and danced for me a few times a week and let me eat her out.. but I don't want to get all close to her son, and teach him, and mentor him if she is just using me for my car... lol I know this sounds crazy and probably is..

  • If your new boyfriend said the following to you, would it be corny or sweet!?

Baby, the other day when we where in the car, you said you wanted some diamond in your arm lol, and I said "I want something too" and you thought it was just a kiss... the truth is, I didn't mean that I wanted your sentual lips on mine, I simply meant I want your heart! I plan to steal it from you, i hope your ready ;) have a good night honey!

Me and this girl have been friends for a few months and just started dating, a lot of men have treated her badly and I'm not nor have I ever treated a woman badly. She has her guard up with me because of her past... I was just thinking this was sweet...
