I have a chemistry midterm review that includes a problem. Given the axial strain of bromine is 2.8 kJ/mol and that of a methyl group is 7/6 kJ/mol, apparently for trans 1-methyl-2-bromo-cyclohexane the difference between the best arrangement and worst is 9 kJ/mol. I can see that this is the sum of the axial and equatorial minus a one half bromine interaction. Likewise, given that the axial strain of an ethyl group is 8 kJ/mol, the most stable configuration of trans 1-ethyl-2-methyl cyclohexane

is 4 kJ/mol, which is clearly half of the ethyl strain. I assume this has something to do with gauche equatorial-equatorial interactions, but I'm not sure how to understand these systematically. Could someone please explain how to think about these interactions? Thank you.

I mean in terms of mass or volume, I'm aware that they had only 25 or so seconds worth of fuel left when they landed, and I only care for your answer if you can give a reliable reference to back it up

What I've seen in most of the question-debates here is the tossing around of terms like 'socialist', 'bigot', etc., even when talking about specific bills, and not parties or people. My question is, is this an over-stressing of doctrine? After all, if there is a systematic problem with the concepts of socialism, then shouldn't that just pan out in an economic review of the likely outcomes of a proposal? This being necessary, as of course neither end of the political extreme is successful - communism, fascism, socialism or capitalism (and I mean pure capitalism, ie. the 1920's factory labor). Therefore, shouldn't we simply compete mathematically to find the most rational solution to an issue, rather than to attempt to impose excessively simplistic insults and petty mindsets onto all legislation, seeing as how any harm which is systematic to a political theory would also show through in any individual policy from it?

I imagine they vary between colleges, but in general, what are the required undergrad majors to be accepted to a JD program?
