  • weight on a very old horse?

I have a 36 year old mare. All her blood work and everything came back good. Her teeth, shots, and worming are completely up to date. She did just loose the last older pasture mate that she had (no she is not alone but my 2nd oldie that was her buddy passed away) She has been dropping weight and i was wondering what i could add to her feed to help her put it back on.

She is on Purina Senior feed, hay pellets (she will not eat hay anymore just chooses not to and has not eaten it in about 2 years) and Alfalfa pellets. She is feed 2 scoops (3 qt scoops) of this twice a day , i would feed her more but i have tried that and she will only eat it in the morning and at night .... she walks away from it when i tried to feed it to her in the afternoon, she is VERY picky.

She will not eat alfalfa cubes or beet pulp so please don't suggest that i have tried and she turns her nose up at it.

  • Horse with an itchy face?

My mare has been rubbing her face so much that she has rubbed the hair off in a few spots. I was not at the barn for a week due to having knee surgery and a friend was taking care of my horses so i went out there this morning and saw that just on one side in 2 spots she has hair missing. Anything that i can do for her to get her to stop itching her face.... my vet is on vacation and will not be back for 2 weeks (she is on a cruise where i wish that i was).

  • How to get weight on my horse?

My horse recently had a horrible string of bad luck with health issues... first is was an abscessed tooth and then it was on to a nasty colic. So he has lost a bit of weight since he was off his feed and hay while he was sick. Now he is hard as hell to get weight back on and i just need some advise on what i can do to help him get that last bit of weight on him.

Here is what he is getting right now twice a day

1 3qt scoop of oats (he LOVES oats and no matter what I have to put them in his feed or he just turns his nose up at it)

    1/2 scoop of senior feed

    1 cup rice bran

hay (as close to free choice as i can get)

  • Getting a stubborn horse to gain weight?

My guy was sick off and on over the summer and had a horrid abcessed tooth this fall so he lost some weight.. need some advise on what i can do to get his weight back up. He is SLOWLY putting it back on and needs to get back to work to get his muscle tone back.

He is a 19 year old 16.3hh gelding

-teeth where just done last month

-vet pulled blood last month and nothing was wrong

-on a regular worming schedule and a fecal check was done

Here is what he gets right now - Twice daily (cant feed anymore than that as there is no way to get to the barn more than 2 times a day right now)

Sorry don't have an exact weight of the feed ... scale broke and with Christmas just cant replace it right now

1 3 qt scoop Oats (if you don't put them in his feed he sticks his nose up at it)

1 3 qt scoop Purina Senior Feed

1 3 qt scoop beet pulp

    1 cup rice bran

    1 cup veggie oil

Of course he gets lots of hay and fresh water.

  • Might be a dumb feed question?

I am not one to pretend that i know everything that there is to know about horses but i have a question.

My friend keeps her horse at my place and she has lost a bit of weight... my friend told me that oats, black oil sunflower seed and oil is the BEST food to get a horse to put on weight, so needless to say that is what her horse is getting now... im not seeing her put on any weight (yes she is current on teeth, worming and blood work is all normal)

I know that my 2 easy keepers are on straight oats and they do just fine with it... my my 3 hard keepers where taken off oats and put on other feed.

  • Some advise on getting weight on my friends horse?

Ok i am looking for a bit of advise on helping get some weight on my friends horse. Now dont get me wrong she is not dead skinny by any means but she it not how my friend wants. One thing that this mare has against her is she is the definition of limo horse. I have never seen a horse with this long a back before so alone makes her look thinner than she really is. One thing to note she cant get alfalfa (anything) or timothy hay it gives her the runs really bad so that is out of the question.

Here is what she is fed right now

2 scoops (3 quart scoops) of this mixed up together

    Rolled oats

    Cracked Corn

    Black oil sunflower seeds

She is also given plenty of hay and access to fresh water and salt and mineral blocks as well.

  • What do you think I did to my knee?

Slippery slimy ankle deep mud +

Bad knees that give out easy +

A 16.3 warmblood that tries to pretend that he is a reining horse and can turn on a dime (of which he fails miserably) =

One muddy owner that can now not straighten her right knee and 1 horse coated in mud on the right side (he is not hurt thankfully)

Go out to feed and the pasture is very muddy near the barn from all the snow and rain that we have been getting. The horses are on the other end of the pasture and they hear the feed buckets getting filled up so they all head over.... all except Dudley who decided that now was a good time to scratch that itch that has been bugging him on the pine trees. Well of course once everyone is almost at their feed buckets it dawns on him that he better get moving so he comes cantering over, of course it is pouring rain and he does not hear me yelling WHOA!!! Until the very last second when he decided that he was a reining horse and can just turn on a dime.

Well that idea did not work and he slid in the mud, he went down on his right side and continued to slide right at me, this happened so fast that i had no time to react next thing i know this 1,110 pound horse slides right into me knocking me completely off my feet and flipping over him and squish i land in the mud. He stops sliding gets up stops over to look at me with the expression "Now what are you doing down there" and trots off to get his breakfast, no worse for the wear. Thankfully Dudley was not hurt other than being a bit dirtier than he was last night.

I hobble to the barn and get cleaned up and head off to work. Well now I am staring to feel every ounce of the impact I can hardly put any weight on my right knee and pain behind my knee when i try to get it straightened is enough to bring me to tears.

What do you think that i might have done to my knee... i am used to pain in the front area of my knee but i have never had pain in the back of my knee like this. It is horrible.

    thanks for any advise.

  • Help me understand? (20 characters)?

Help me understand this, friend of mine just stared working with her 18 month old horse. Here is what I don't understand she had a rope halter on him (that was about 5 sizes to big) and this really log whip with metal in the middle. She was constantly whacking the lead rope to teach him something. It was enough that the sound started to bother my horse. The she would ask him to back up by smacking (lightly) on his legs and chest with this whip thing. She says that she is using clinton anderson training and I will admit I have never used that method my horses responded to monty roberts method so that is what I have always used. She told me that what she was doing was lunging for resPect tm it just bugged me how many time she was sacking and jerking n the lead rope but I am not onto criticize another's training method.

  • Horse get the runs every fall?

I have an older mare that every fall gets a good case of the runs. Nothing changes in her diet or the pasture that she is out on. She does not act any different or go off her feed she gets gets messy poop. Every time that i have the vet out she finds nothing wrong and it usually clears up up in about 2 weeks and it is gone until next fall. When she was younger it always corresponded with when she was coming out of heat, I doubt that she is still going in and out of heat but she still gets this every fall like clockwork. She is up to date on all her vaccinations, worming, and teeth floating. Any one have any advice on anything that i can do help her tummy during this few weeks????

  • Putting weight on an older horse.?

Ok I have 2 senior horses 1 mare that we have had forever that went thru a very rough winter and the other gelding that we rescued (to cheer up the mare)

Both horses are fed 3 times a day and they are on 24/7 turn out. Both horses are current on shots, worming and having their teeth floated, Blood work was drawn on both and came back within normal range.

I feed Nutrina Life Design complete feed, alfalfa cubes and hay pellets. All the feed is soaked before it is fed to them.

Since I switched them to this feed (from Purina senior feed) I have noticed that both of them are slowly starting to put on weight and their energy level has gone way up.

I have tried adding beet pulp but neither of them like it they just sift thru it and leave it piled in the pen. They get hay both in the morning and in the evening. They cant have free choice hay in the pasture as they both have quite a few missing teeth so we supervise when they eat hay.

Also any tips on helping this 2 senior horses get some muscle, the old mare was one that used to have to be worked every day or she would loose tone, neither of them are sound for riding any more.

    Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Pain in the back of the knee why?

I have bad knees, have been dealing with them most of my life. I recently had a lateral release and clean up done on the left knee. Well this left me with slightly reduce ROM in that knee (no big deal it is really not that bad) the problem is this. I was walking outside and tripped over a vine that was on the ground. My foot caught and the problem is when I was falling forward (like u do when you trip) my knee locked up and it caused me to twist sideways and fall (should have had a video camera daughter called it an epic fall right into a mud puddle ) Every since that happened the swelling, that was FINALLY down, in that knee is back just as bad as it was before the surgery and the back of my knee is KILLING me. In all the years that I have had knee issues the back of my knee has never bothered me at all. It is so bad that it hurts to straighten my leg and OMG at night trying to sleep is a nightmare!!! When I move I about wake up screaming from the pain.

Don't tell me to call my OS and get in to see him I have an appt with him tomorrow afternoon just seeing if anyone had any ideas on what the heck might be going on?

  • What to do to relieve knee pain?

Ok long story short I have had a lot of surgeries on my knees to help with pain. Well lately I have been having 2 big problems. 1 - my left knee is giving out and it is to the point that I will fall and have to physically grab my left leg and move it to get the knee to pop back into place. The pain in that knee is horrible it is like walking on broken glass most of the time.

2 - right knee that I am recovering from surgery number 6 on was doing great while i was on crutches but now that i am finally off of them the pain and the stiffness is getting worse and worse. Every time that i stand up from sitting for a while the pain is enough to almost bring tears to my eyes, once i get moving it will feel a bit better but not much.

I do see an orthopedic surgeon (on a WAY to regualr basis) I am just looking for some tips to help with the pain (other than the constant pain pills that i am having to take just to get through the day)

Also I am NOT overweight and never have been so loosing weight is not an answer, I am not that active in sports any more (in fact the only sport that I can do now is light horseback riding)
