  • Acer Aspire E1-570 - speakers not working?

    Hello all,

I've had my laptop for just over 6 months now and I've encountered no problems until recently.

However I am experiencing problems with the sound. It just doesn't appear to be working, despite the volume being turned up to the max. The problem usually fixes itself briefly after a restart but it then cuts out after time.

None of the playback devices are muted. When I try testing the speakers, I get an error message saying "Device in Use: Please close any applications using this device for playing audio" - however, there doesn't appear to be any device using the speakers.

I have recently started using an HDMI cable to use my laptop through my TV, I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Do black people's penises change colour during puberty?

    Hello all,

Yes, this question is a little crude. But it's something I'm rather curious about. Being a white male, I know that white penises change colour during puberty - from a peachy white to a tan leather brown, depending on how masculine you are.

What I'd love to know is whether black people's (other non-white races are available) penises change colour during puberty. Maybe from a brown to a darker brown, or black or even purple?

Please take this question seriously. I'd rather ask an anonymous Internet public than do my own 'personal' research.

    Thanks

  • I can't afford Beats by Dre, but I'd love some headphones of a similar size and shape. Suggestions?

    Hello all,

I'm in the market for some decent headphones, but my budget extends to about £60. I love the size and shape of the Beats by Dre headphones, but there's no way I'm spending £200!

What I'm after are some decents headphones to use with iPod which aren't too chunky. I've got a relatively small head and would therefore prefer on-ear headphones as opposed to over-ear - if only to stop me looking like Princess Leia.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • I live in France and want to call my girlfriend in Italy. Anyone know the cheapest way?

    Hello all,

As the title suggests, I'm currently living in France and my girlfriend is in Italy. We both own English phones on O2 plus we both have separate phones with French and Italian sim cards, respectively.

At the moment we just text each other on our English phones because it's only 9p or something with O2 International. But I'd really love to be able to talk on the phone. Skype is an option but we both have terrible Internet connection and it's a pain to use it.

So my question is, does anyone know of any European or International calling cards or whatever that I can buy which will ensure cheaper rates for phoning abroad. At the moment it costs me 36p/min to call her on my English phone, so anything for a third of that price would be worthwhile.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Alternative to using slow university halls Internet? Maybe a dongle?

    Hello all,

I'm currently on my year abroad in France staying in university halls. As expected in halls, the Internet is unbearably slow at peak times, Now, I know I can't improve the university network but I was wondering if there's an alternative way to access the Internet, for example by buying a Dongle or something like that?

I'm a novice when it comes to what Dongles are and what they do. Am I right in thinking that I can buy one and subscribe monthly to a Wifi provider and therefore access the Internet in my room without connecting to halls Internet?

    Thanks for any responses.

  • When using mobile Internet abroad, is it FREE if I log in to a free Wi-fi spot?

I own a Blackberry and I'm going to be spending an academic year in France.

I understand that when roaming, mobile Internet charges are huge (£3/MB) and should be avoided. However, I'm unsure about one thing. Is this only the case when using 3G Internet?

For example, if I manage to connect to a free Wi-Fi spot (either at university or in a café) does this mean that there are no charges for using the Internet?

    I hope I'm being clear!

    Thanks

  • Best electric shaver?

    Hello,

I need some recommendations from electric shaver users. I currently use a manual Gilette razor and I'm finding it really tiresome and it's simply not doing a good enough job.

While I don't have a lot of facial hair, I get very quick growth on my upper lip and chin in particular, meaning after two days I have a patchy moustache and beard. I'd really love an electric razor to just quickly get rid of my stubble efficiently and without too much hassle.

My price range is really £40-70. Can anyone recommend any efficient electric shavers that get the job done quickly? Preferably rechargable.

    Thanks.

  • NFL International Series @ Wembley: What shall I wear?

    Hello everyone.

I'm really excited because I've got tickets for the Broncos vs. 49ers game at Wembley in London this Sunday evening.

However, my problem is I'm not sure whether to wear a football jersey that isn't of any of the teams playing. I own a Miami Dolphins jersey which I would love to wear come game day, but does anyone reckon it's a bit inappropriate to wear a different team's jersey?

I feel that the International Series is a celebration of American Football, so my Dolphin jersey wearing wouldn't be too wrong.

    What are your thoughts?

  • Is there a word for someone who believes women should have more rights than men?

I was discussing this with some friends yesterday and got a bit confused.

So I understand that a misogynist is basically someone who believes men are more important than women. And furthermore that someone who believes men and women should have equal rights is a feminist. Obviously, each description is not exclusive to gender, that is to say that a man can be a feminist (and should be) just as much as a woman can be misogynist - although the latter is rare.

However, is there a word for someone who believes women should have MORE rights than men? This is not what a feminist is, for the feminist movement was set up as a reaction to misogyny to fight for EQUAL rights.

I hope someone understands what I'm actually asking!

  • Dance song that I heard in a club, maybe samples an older song from the 1940s?

Ok, so I heard this tune in a club. I imagine it samples a track from around 50 years ago because it's in that sort of style, kinda Cabaret-esque with female vocals. It actually sounds a bit like Hey Big Spender from Sweet Charity.

I seem to recall the artist name is something like Gramophone X or whatnot Saying that, the track has the crackly effect on it as it it's being played from a gramophone. Similar to that.

    Any ideas?

  • Popular French novels published in the last 10 years?

I am required to read a French novel (in the original) which was published in the noughties. But I have no idea where to start! I couldn't name you any French novels written that weren't much older!

Can anyone suggest any decent books? Preferably nothing too complex or long, but with an element of critical acclaim.

Perhaps something that would have won/been shortlisted for the French version of the Booker prize (whatever that may be!)

    Thanks.

  • How to say in French 'for having done that'?

    For example:

Has she apologised for having done that?

I know the first bit is "S'est-elle excusée" but how do I add in the 'for having done that' and make it sound properly French?

  • Why can a defender who makes an interception continue with the drive even if his knee touches the ground?

Just been watching some of yesterday's NFL highlights (I'm new to the game) and this just occured to me.

The defender picked off the QBs pass and hit the ground with the ball in his hand. Then he got up and proceeded to carry on running with the football. Why is it allowed if he's already hit the ground?

    Thanks

  • Can someone give me a summary of French politics from the 2002 elections to the present day?

Basically, I need to know the major things that have happened in the French political system since Chirac's win against Le Pen in 2002.

Have there been any major changes?

What were the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections in this period?

    Thanks

  • A few questions about my dog's behaviour?

    Hello.

I have a standard schnauzer who is 9 years old, and I've got some questions about some of the things she does sometimes.

    1) When I'm wet, for example after getting out of the shower, she likes to lick the water off of my legs. I have no idea if she's doing it simply because she's thirsty or if she's doing it as a service to her owner or something bizarre like that. What do you reckon?

    2) Today, while on a walk, she ran ahead because she smelt another dog (she was on the lead) and when I caught up with her she was looking at a woman with two dogs.

One of the dogs in particular was looking at my dog but they were quite far away. Usually, when my dog sees another dog, she will stop and slowly go over to say hello. She is normally very friendly and playful.

But with this particular dog she had this urge to run towards it excitedly, to the point where she was choking herself on her collar. When I stopped her and tried to calm her down, she howled in what could be described as sadness. She looked upset but I didn't want her to hurt herself.

I've never seen her behave like this with any other dog and I was wondering if anyone knows why she would have behaved like this.

    Thanks

  • Good club songs (dance, funky house)?

When I go clubbing I hear a lot of dance songs that I like, but I have no idea what they are?

I know Show Me Love, Riverside and some others, but can anyone suggest any more that are similar to this, or even better a CD which has all of them on!

Anything that has a massive donk on it really (as The Blackout Crew would say).

    Thanks.
