Hello, one of my coworkers in Cairo took me out Friday with his family for an all day feast with music, dancing, etc. I would like to get his family a gift (I am American). What would be appropriate? Something preferably non-perishable, as I have to bring it to work tomorrow.

I am just trying to boil an artichoke for a snack to dip in lemon butter. I cut off the top and the outside parts that were tough, but the inside looks really brown. It smells OK but I have never had an artichoke look like that inside. Is it bad? Or just not ripe?
