I'm a high school student who likes to think of himself as reasonably intelligent. Currently I'm in Sydney, Australia.
What was considered to be beautiful in early 19th century England women?
I'm interested to know if there were other features that were considered beautiful compared to today. For example, these days it is (not accounting for differences in taste) popularly considered beautiful to have long (possibly blond) hair, large breasts, a tan, and so on...
Has anyone run into historical information/studied this aspect of the past?
4 AnswersHistory1 decade agoWhat sort of racial prejudice is hinted in Jane Austen's Emma?
I didn't really catch any, except for the gipsy scene. Does anyone else know of any other racial prejudice in Emma?
1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade ago(male) How can I straighten my hair without a straightener? Also...?
What should I ask a hairdresser if I want to get my hair thinned out (I like it at its current length but its very thick)?
Thanks in advance, from a guy with no knowledge of hair!
9 AnswersHair1 decade agoWhat sort of SAT percentages would I need to get into MIT as an international student?
I don't quite understand the SAT system you have there (or maybe I just haven't found a good explanation of it yet) but what sort of percentage in each section would I require to get into MIT from overseas?
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoCracking knees when squatting - am I doing something wrong?
I've been setting a personal goal to learn some parkour, as well as jumping and ninja-style moves (nothing overly fancy just something interesting to become more fit with). Part of the training I've made for myself is doing squats, however when I do squats my knees begin cracking and often I feel knee pain for a day or more afterward.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is there something wrong with my knees, or has anyone else experienced this and fixed it by adjusting their exercise in some way?
3 AnswersPain & Pain Management1 decade agoAre more watts used by resistors with high resistance or resistors with low resistance?
According to my calculations the same voltage over a 2 ohm resistor and a 0.002 ohm resistor uses more watts over a 0.002 ohm resistor than a 2 ohm resistor.
Is that correct? Why would something with less resistance use more power than something with more resistance?
4 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoGraphing of hyperbolas - how do you know which side the lines go on?
Here's what I've been trying to graph:
2/1-x
I know the vertical asymptote is x=1
and the horizontal asymptote is y=0
However, I assumed it was a positive hyperbola and graphed it in a way similar to 1/x, but when checking using a calculator on my computer it came up on the other two corners.
How do I know which corners to plot my lines in (other than making a table of values)?
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoBoxing advice?
Hey everyone. I'm a beginner (and mostly casual) boxer here. I'm not professionally interested (yet) but I just want to know how to effectively use what I currently have.
I've been told that I have quite a lot of stamina, especially considering I'm pretty unfit. I weigh 65 kilos (16 yo; it seem be light/heavy to some people but among my friends I'm a bit above average) and am 178cm tall (around 5 foot 10 inches).
Any general advice on how I should fight? What do I have that I can use to my advantage? I exercise for one hour a day besides the boxing - what sort of exercises should I incorporate?
Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersBoxing1 decade agoWhat is voltage? Can it be explained further than simply being the 'energy' a charge has?
I know current is the rate at which charges move through a body.
I also know that voltage may be described as the energy these charges have, or the electrical 'potential difference'. I also believe I am right in saying that voltage is the amount of joules per charge?
Can anyone please elaborate on exactly what voltage and/or joules is a measure of? I am able to answer my problems correctly in my Physics class, yet am simply not comfortable with just a basic understanding. As you may see by checking my profile, I rarely forget to choose my best answer, so please do answer.
8 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoIf proving that points A, B, and C are a right angled triangle, I would have to:?
Say that the gradients of:
AB=m1
AC=m2
BC=m3
Would I have to prove (for example) that m1m2=-1 while m2m3 and m1m3 is not equal to -1, or would I just have to prove that m1m2=-1?
8 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoIn order to prove that three points are collinear, is it suitable to:?
I was given three points.
I used the first two points to create an equation of a line in general form, and substituted the final point into the equation to prove that LHS=RHS=0.
I then said therefore the points are collinear.
Is this enough proof in a mathematical sense? Sorry I didn't type out the actual proof but that's an accurate description of what I actually did.
4 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoIn trignometry, when speaking in terms of sin, cosec, etc. does pi mean 360 degrees?
I remember hearing something of the such from my teacher but he said not to worry about it till later on, but now I've encountered a question in my homework:
Prove:
sin^2(pi-theta) + cos^2(2pi-theta) = 1
Do I simply substitute 360 degrees for pi? If not, how do I solve this question?
5 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoWeird mouse behaviour in 3D applications. Anyone else had this problem on a laptop?
When using Cinema 4D and ZBrush, attempting to zoom with the mouse always for some weird reason results in me zooming out super quickly. Also, rotating in Cinema 4D also yields to annoying result of going in random directions.
I do not have mouse problems in other applications. I have tried several things, including turning off the inbuilt mouse pad, attempting to update the drivers, changing the port my mouse is plugged into, and trying a different mouse.
Someone please help me!
1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoEmma by Jane Austin - Chapter 2. Who is Miss Churchill?
The first couple of pages of that chapter have been rather difficult for me to comprehend. Is Miss Churchill the deceased wife of Mr Weston, or is she just someone who fell in love with him but never got together with him? Can anyone please help me get this clear? Thanks in advance, I just don't feel I can continue reading without understanding everything in full.
3 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoWhat if we were able to swap bodies, and able to trade one's entire life using a soul transfer machine?
Wouldn't it be wonderful? You could spend 10 years growing up as a cowboy's son in Texas, from ages 11-20 growing up as a girl in Sydney, ages 21-30 as a business man in Japan, ages 31-40 as a French actress, ages 41-50 as an Indian programmer, and then pay a large amount of money to buy the body of a 20 year old and continue living forever! Of course, those with less money would end up less long than those with more, which is morally wrong, but wouldn't it be awesome if you were rich?

2 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment1 decade agoHow can I improve my social skills as a busy student with little time?
I really want to enjoy my couple of years of high school, as I've realized I've wasted it away doing nothing fun. Therefore, between my study I want to spend as much time as possible outside having fun with friends, hopefully even making many new friends. Of course, as I am aiming to beat everyone in my school (and so far coming close) in school subjects, that means I don't have time to be socializing for more than 2-3 hours a day on average.

I am willing to work my way all the way to PhD level in any non-medical or environmental course. I simply wish to know of the jobs which will give me over $100k Australian without having to work in a medical area or have to live in an obscure mining location. Having a salary of $60+ within 2 years is preferable. Thanks in advance.

I've only ever used an electric shaver to shave, yet if i try to shave more than once every two days, I experience pain similar to rubbing sand paper on my skin. Has anyone experienced this? Was this remedied by a better electric shaver or a hand razor?
8 AnswersMen's Health1 decade agoWhen pointing a bright torch at a cloudy night sky, does the light actually reflect off the clouds?
Or is it simply a trick of the eye; is it just an appearance? Having used the torch just then while having all my house lights turned off, was simply wondering this. I know it appears that the light hits the clouds, but are the clouds really close enough to see such a vivid reflection from a torch?
