  • Describe sequence of geometrical transformations that maps...?

    ...the graph of

    y = cosec(x) onto the graph of y = cosec(2x +30).

Just wondering what order you would do the transformation here?

    I thought it would be:

    stretch in x, factor 1/2

    translate (-30,0)

but the answers I've been given seem to ask for the order of translation to be different.

It suggests that if I do the stretch first, then the translation after that will have to be -15. But that makes no sense to me at all because the two seem totally separate, and in fact should only be translated by -15 if you to the translation first and THEN the stretch.

Anyway, I just wonder if I could get a consensus of opinion on what the answer is, particularly regarding the order of the steps I should take.

    Thanks!

  • Boyle's Law question - Pressure and Volume?

Ashamed to say I haven't a clue how to go about answering this question. I've tried everything and never ever get the right answer, according to the book. I mean, even with the answer in front of me, I can't figure it out how to get it!

A cylinder of volume 0.020 metres cubed contains nitrogen gas at a pressure of 80 Atmospheres. The valve is opened and gas is collected at atmospheric pressure until the pressure in the cylinder has fallen to 60 Atmospheres. What is the volume of the released nitrogen gas?

Only factor this should involve is P=kV, right? I guess the thing that's throwing me is which figures I should be calculating.

    Thanks!

  • Upgrading motorcycle engine - what electrics required? (CDI, loom, + more?)?

My 125 engine blew up so I decided I'd replace it with a 250 engine for the hell of it.

Assuming I can get it into the frame okay, I'm wondering how it's gonna go with the electrics?

I've bought a CDI and full wiring loom to match the engine (all from same model of bike), but I'm wondering if there are any other parts of the electrical system that I'll also need to match in the same way? Regulator rectifier, HTcoil, etc?

If it helps at all, my bike is a Suzuki GN125 and I'm replacing the engine with a GN250 one.

    Cheers!

  • Integrate 4x(2x+1)^5 by substitution. Let u = 2x+1?

I can proudly say I've flown through my maths course, done loads of calculus etc with relative ease, but this substitution malarkey has me completely stumped! And it's apparently supposed to make it easier...?!

Even the most basic example in the textbook eludes me, so a step-by-step explained answer would be lovely.

    Thanks!

  • Graphics/graph drawing calculator really allowed for A-level maths exams?

I'm aware of which exams I can and cannot use a calculator in, but I'm a little confused.

I'm looking at some exam papers right now and the ones with calculators allowed say, 'You may use a graphics calculator'.

When it says 'graphics calculator', does this mean the type that actually can actually produce a graph for you on the screen? I assume that's what it means.

However it confuses me because it surely makes a large portion of the exam so much easier. I mean... one question in this question paper asks to sketch the graph of y =tan(-1)x. That's fine... but... surely it's a joke of a question if you can just bring up that graph on your calculator and copy it from there?!

NOTE: the question paper I'm looking at is definitely a 'calculator allowed' paper.

So anyway, if I actually can use a graphics calculator - the type that will produce a graph for you -... can anyone suggest a good/typical one for the test? I'm an adult student studying at home so I don't know what the standard is for calculators, etc.

    Thanks!

  • Find integral of √(4/2x-1)?

    Anybody?

I presume it to be just a few simple steps, but the 4/2x-1 is throwing me. I expect it to integrate to something like (2/3)(2ln(2x-1))^(3/2)

but the book gives a way different answer.

    Thanks!

  • Find the centre of gravity?

A rectangular tray of mass 0.20kg and length 0.30m is balanced with two mugs of coffee each of mass 0.40kg with their centres placed at 0.10m and 0.20m along the centre line of the tray. Where is the centre of gravity when one mug is removed from the tray?

I'm doing A2 maths and A2 Physics but I haven't a clue how to do this, hah! I have the answer in my exercise book, but really I just need to know the steps to get there. Even a rough explanation will do, Precise calculations don't need to be shown.

    Cheers!

  • Make table with sortable columns word/excel?

I've made a list of the universities I intend to apply to, with various criteria such as grade requirements, course length, student ratings, etc. So if I can make it into a table, where I can click the top of each column to sort it into order (a bit like any window in windows explorer - alphabetical/numerical etc), that would be great!

    Is it possible?

  • Does an anti-fog visor/lens work?

I'm looking at getting something like this for my motorbike over winter:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310365659266?_trksid=p51...

I'm just wondering how truthful 'anti-fog' is? Because I have some goggles now and they totally mist up in cold/wet weather.

So basically, is it true that you can get 'anti-fog' lenses, or is that all just marketing bullsh**?

  • What's it like to be a taxi driver on Friday and Saturday night?

Well, I'm just genuinely interested in what it might be like! Good? Bad?

I wonder how horrible it is to be a taxi driver in the UK on Friday and Saturday night.

Also, what's with the stories of drunken girls being abused or touched up by taxi drivers, particularly the drivers from north African and Middle-Eastern countries? I dunno how much it goes on in the UK, but it was a big issue in Australia quite recently. I was working there, and one of my co-workers, from Algeria, told me that all his Arab taxi driver friends believed women should be totally covered up, and if they were drunk and in a taxi wearing really revealing clothes, it was like an invite to have sex.

That was his justification for his fellow countrymen groping and raping girls in their taxis.

Well anyway, this question has gone off on a tangent a bit, but I'll keep it here anyway because it's just a message I was told, straight from the horses mouth!

But more to the point, what's it actually like to be a taxi driver?! Specially in town and city centres when everybody is drunk and awful.

  • Fit a GN250 or GN400 engine onto Suzuki GN125?

Question says it all. Can it be done???

The GN models all look incredibly similar. GN125 and GN250 seem to have exactly the same frame. GN400 is slightly different.

Basically when I get a full licence I would like to try fitting a bigger engine onto my GN125, instead of buying a whole new bike.

Please don't tell me to just buy a new bike. That's boring.

  • Computer SD card slot broken?

When I put my SD card into my laptop it tells me the card needs formatting. When I try to format the card it tells me it can't be done.

I bought a new card and it did the same thing again, so I assume the cards are fine and it's actually the laptop which is screwing up.

I tried un-installing the card reader from device manager, so it would newly reinstall automatically when I restarted the computer, but that didn't work either -the same thing still happens. Could the hardware be broken..?

  • My camera memory card shows as empty when I plug it into a computer.?

    Well that's basically it really.

    It's an SDHC card.

I can view the pictures on the camera, and when I plug it into a computer and go to properties it tells me that 990mb of space is taken up and 7Gb is free, so the computer knows there is information on the card, but when I open the folder it just shows nothing.

I'm pretty sure the card got a virus at some point but I fixed it and it still worked.

When this problem first happened I was able to get round it by going to the command prompt and changing the directory to the one for the card (F: or H: or something) and then it would show all the contents so I could open photos from there and have them revealed on Windows.

But now even that doesn't work. I go to the command prompt, change the directory to that of the card and type DIR and all it says is that the folder is empty, and also that the drive has no label...?

    Any help?

  • Which district of Mumbai is the main city centre bit with lots of people and things...?

What a childishly worded question. Hah. But it's pretty self-explanatory. I'm going to India for a fairly long time, starting in Mumbai. I'll be going all over the place, hopefully off the beaten track etc, but to settle in I'd like to start in the most blatant, populous, standard part of the city.

Basically, if complete and utter foreigner said to me that they were visiting London, I would tell them to check out Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, etc. So if I were going to Mumbai as a foreigner, where would somebody with good local knowledge recommend for me to stay in the centre, where it's all 'going on'?

  • Is it possible to dye a polyester rucksack with PVC coating?

I'm going travelling and have bought myself a rucksack which I really like for the pockets and functionality, but it's design is camouflage, which I don't like because it can be a bit risky having military patterns on your clothing in developing countries.

So my aim is to dye it black.

    This is the rucksack

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Combat-Assault-MOLLE-Backp...

It says it is made from polyster and has a PVC coating. I assume you can't dye PVC, but if I totally submerge it in a sink full of black dye will it make the polyster turn black, or at least darken the whole thing to an extent?

Failing that.... what does anyone think to me literally spray painting it? Please don't ridicule me as I'm being serious with that suggestion!

    Thanks!
