Aussies Kita A-BOB!

I am a 26 year old novice dog fancier. I purchased and trained my first show and agility dog, Nakita. She is a black tri australian shepherd. Unfortunately she didn't turn out as a show dog, so now she is spayed and loving the agility scene. We are nearly finished with ASCA novice classes. So proud of her accomplishments. I also have a black tri male aussie pup, who will be shown in conformation. My mini schnauzer Titan is a novice agility dog, but is far to introverted to enjoy the sport at a competitive level. I should also mention Chewbacca, my shih tzu. He is a sweet lap dog. My dogs are fed a prey model raw diet, and love every minute of it! I am a college graduate with critical thinking skills. I don't believe everything I hear, so I don't spew innaccurate information. If you find me to be in error, let me know! I am always learning, and love to be corrected.

  • Kenchii thinning shears scorpion vs 5 star?

There is a 44 tooth scorpion and a 44 tooth 5 star thinning shear. Other than the 5 star being considered a "level 2" shear, is there a difference in the type of finish between the two thinning shears? For example, is one considered a finishing and one considerd a bulking shear? I simply cannot find the information... and I've looked!

    Thanks :)

  • What is your opinion of this as a light gaming laptop?

    http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=1...

By light gaming I'm talking Dragon age, mass effect, etc. Nothing multiplayer or online is necessary.

I am mostly wondering if the 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M Graphics is an integrated or dedicated card, and if it will suffice for what I need. I also can't tell if I will be able to plug my nice HD HUGE monitor into the laptop... how do I figure that out? I'd like to be able to play in high resolution without the graphics jerking.

    Thanks for your opinions!

  • Fanciers, will you give your opinion of my australian shepherd's type?

I've got a seven month old aussie pup who is conformationally and structurally very nice. Obviously there are things on every dog we would tweak, and he is no exception. I know its impossible to really evaluate a dog based on photos without seeing movement, but trust me when I say his rear is very, very nice, his front movement is correct (when his head is down and focused, haha), his sidegait is balanced and ground covering but not super flashy (in other words moderate and correct as per breed standard).

I keep hearing from his breeder that he is lacking in breed type, however when I ask her what that means, she can't put it into words at all. (as a novice, I'm trying to learn all I can!!) She finally said "Well, you just don't look at him and say 'Wow, that's a nice aussie." So, I'm wondering if she is meaning flash and style instead of actual breed type. Or if what she is trying to say is that he isn't *her* type.

IMO the most un-typey part of him are his ears.

Will you help me understand what is it she is trying to say? Let me know if you need any additional information. The photos are right on his seven month birthday.

  • Do you think dog personality/temperament is more environment or genetics?

When my puppy first came home, I had very serious doubts about his temperament and personality as a show dog and family pet. I mean serious enough that I called his breeder and told her if he didn't shape up I was sending him back. Since then, he has absolutely blossomed into an amazing puppy, very stable and solid. As a six month old puppy, we took our first road trip in the RV, and he weathered it without a single issue. Nothing phases this guy!

I believe getting him out of the home he was in was instrumental in his turn around. Conversely...

The breeder kept two puppies, one puppy is now a neutered pet and he is a very sweet and well adjusted boy. The female, however, is now set to be spayed and placed in a different home because she attacked a little girl. No blood but some serious bruising. So, in the same environment two dogs have very obviously not had the same experience.

So, in your opinion, which is it?

  • Guardian Gear collapsible crates?

Anybody have experience with this particular brand of crate? I've been looking at the sizes, and the large size seems way to big for my aussies, but the medium seems like it may be a tad to small. Anybody have personal experience with the size of these crates? My aussie is about 27" long and about 20" at the shoulder.

  • Have you ever used the product Glo-Coat?

I'm looking for a light, leave in conditioner (diluted and spritzed on with a bottle) I want it to add some shine, but also not build up in the coat. I was at a show in Vegas over the weekend, and my poor boy's coat had the moisture wicked right out of him! I know a couple of my friends use glo coat, but I've never asked them about it.

    Any other suggestions?

  • Titling in AKC agility?

I've not yet competed in AKC, we've got a trial in a month. I've been reading the rulebook, and as far as I can tell you only need Q's in JWW and Standard to get your MACH. Is this correct? If it is correct, then why do they have a FAST titling class?

I may not even enter FAST classes if I don't have to, as we run ASCA agility where we have gamblers class.

  • Fanciers, can you define "type?"?

Is type something that is definable? What does it mean if a dog lacks type or has type? I am not talking about conforming to the written standard, this question is a bit hard to phrase, I think.

I was at a show and one of my friends said "She's very correct, but lacks type." They were trying to explain what exactly that meant, but I'm still confused! Or standing ringside I'll hear "Ya... he's not very typey." What does that mean? (dealing with australian shepherds here, by the way)

  • How important is a dedicated graphics card, and dual RAM?

I'm in the market for a new laptop. I am a light gamer, the most graphic-intense game I own is Dragon Age II, my sister has Sims III she'll probably load on my computer too. I'm customizing a Dell (yes, I know many people don't like Dell, but my last machine lasted over 6 years and only failed after I upgraded the HDD two summers ago) and the option for the dedicated graphics is AMD Radeon™ HD 6470M (64-bit) 512MB Dual. I have no idea if this is even a worthwhile card, or if the integrated will be fine.

Now for RAM, I can save a bit if I get a 4G instead of a 6G. What kind of difference would I see between the two speeds?

I am trying to balance *want* over actual need, what I really want is an Alienware, but I know I don't need that many bells and whistles plus it is way out of my price range. I'd like to stay around $800 if you have any other suggestions.

    Thank you!

  • Good glue for aussie ears?

Taping is *not* working. We just finished our monthly shows, and I'd like to glue his ears now to prepare for the next shows. I'd like a glue that holds, but is also relatively easy to remove.

I am also going to give my friend/mentor a call, but she's not into gluing so I don't know how much help she'll be.

  • Mars Coat King or cheaper brand?

I really need a coat stripper, my friend suggested the Paw Brothers Coat Rakke and gave me a website to order it from. However, including the handling charge and shipping, on the Paw Brothers, I can order a Mars Coat King for $10 more and that includes free two day shipping.

    I also found this: http://www.amazon.com/Oster-Professional-Grooming-...

Anybody with experience with coat rakes and where the best place to order might be?

  • Any ASCA nationals agility folks out there?

I want to go to nationals this year and run agility with one of my aussies and conformation with the other. Do I have to qualify to enter the agility national, or is it like conformation and you simply sign up?

If I *do* need to qualify, how do I go about doing that?

  • Can shears made for people be used on dogs?

Question is pretty self explanatory, LOL! Will the edges tend to dull faster because dog hair tends to be coarse?

  • Putting a dog outside to grow coat?

One of my friends (I use that term loosly) on facebook mentioned that she was having her dogs sleep outside to help them grow more coat. I'm curious if this would actually help a dog grow more coat?

*please note, this question is not to bash on people who leave their dogs outside, nor is it to address whether you think it is wrong or not.

  • What show collar is normally used on a samoyed?

Alright Animal Artwork, help me out ;) What kind of collar is normally used on a samoyed in the ring. In my puppy handling class, there is a very newbie couple with their sam pup, and they are using a snake chain. It is *constantly* getting tangled in the hair, and I feel kind of bad because they spend so much time messing with the collar.

I braid kangaroo leads and leashes, and I'm thinking about just braiding them a collar, but I don't know how the leather will be with the hair. Will a roo leather collar work? Or are sams traditionally shown with a nylon?

  • Remind me how this works (earning points in the show ring)?

Its been three years since I've been in the ring, and yesterday I had my puppy out for his first classes! At the show things are too hectic getting puppies and dogs ready to go, I didn't really have much time to chat with my friends.

My question is about BOW points. Say there aren't enough dogs or b!tches for a major, but the numbers combined would be a major. Does the BOW take a major in points then? This is what I understand, tell me if I'm wrong. Say a dog goes BOW, so that dog gets the points from both the dog and the ***** classes, right? And WD and WB both take their points from the classes, and BOS doesn't get anything more.

    Thanks!

(ps, here is a pic of my 4 month old boy free stacking in the ring. He's got a bit of crate-head in the rear http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/aslater_do... )

  • Plain yogurt as a probiotic?

Will plain yogurt work as a probiotic in a dog the same way it does a human? Or do I have to purchase a dog specific product?

I would appreciate any other suggestions as well. Thank you.

  • Puppy gets really serious when he has a show lead on? Also crabbing?

The specs. Brisbane is 17 weeks old, today actually :) This guy had virtually *no* personality when I brought him home, as he was picked on by his littermates and dam. (I was actully very worried he was not going to cut it as a show prospect...) Since then, he has had an about face, tons of personality and is a very good puppy. He loves to be right with me.

What can I do to help my pup keep his personality when we are playing "show dog." I've always tried to be very careful to keep our sessions fun and pressure free. He will always give me his ears, and he is alert, but very serious. He also hangs his belly down, which makes him look high in the rear, even though he isn't.

He definitely doesn't like his lead being pulled on, but he always rushes his down and back like crazy, so I have to keep tension on his lead to slow him down.

Also, and I know this is a puppy thing right now, but any tips on preventing crabbing? He crabs away from me. I've been switching the sides we practice on, and I've been trying to keep the tension low and close to me. He seems to do the best, though, when I keep the tension pulled straight up. Or do I just let him go on a loose lead and ignore the crabbing for now?

  • What is the analysis of this chord?

I am arranging a children's song for choir, and am currently analyzing the music. The piece is in the key of G major, and the chord is a diminished a c e-flat. The chord before it is a I, and after it is also a I. I am thinking it is a fully diminished seven of I, but I am not sure. Help?

(PS. This is not a homework assignment, I am doing this for fun)
