  • How do I set the timer on a Nikon D60?

Before you say it, I did a search and found the following answer from six years ago, which doesn't work:

    "Press menu

use the multi selelctor to get to teh custom shooting menu it will look like pencil icon

    press the multiseelector right

use the down mulyiselector to get to menu custon settings 11

press OK or the right selector again

    select self timer

    press OK

Now the fn button is set to the self timer, you press the fn button and it will activate it then press the shutter release to activate it "

I have done all of this. I press "Fn" and it says "Self-timer" on the display screen. I press the shutter button, and it doesn't do anything. There is no countdown, there is nothing on the display to indicate that it might or might not be doing anything.

Twice, out of about 20 tries, it did actually work. Naturally it never worked when I actually had my shot set up, and most of the time it never worked when I was just testing it either.

What's the magic formula that makes it work?

  • Looking for recommendations for best Newfoundland folk music (Great Big Sea, Figgy Duff?) for a newbie?

My gf asked me to find her some good Newfoundland folk music while I was over there, and I don't know much about folk, so I'm not sure what to get her. I've decided to get at least two albums, but I want to increase the chance they'll be something she enjoys.

She's a huge Beatles fan, and has an interest in folk music. I suppose I want to find something iconic but good for a beginner.

I've been recommended Figgy Duff and Great Big Sea. Does anyone have any other recommendations, and also, which albums from Figgy Duff and GBS would be the best, do you think?

  • How much time should I leave at LAX between flights?

I'm traveling to Canada from Australia, and unfortunately it looks like I'll have to stop over in the US to get the cheapest flights (which ironically seems to make the trip longer).

My university's travel agent has given me proposed flight plans that leave only 3-hours at LAX on the way up and the way back. I have had trips before where even three hours was not enough time (due to missing baggage) at an international airport, and I have heard that LAX is one of the worst, and I am apparently almost guaranteed to being delayed coming in, cutting it even finer.

How long is a reasonable amount to time to leave between flights at LAX? Keep in mind I will have very little money to spare, and a hotel room in LA overnight is probably out of the question.

  • Why are banking turns in sci-fi spaceships unrealistic?

One of the most common criticisms made about science fiction spaceships is that they make "banking turns", where the ship turns by rotating 90 degrees (so that left and right become up and down) and then changing direction "upward" (relative to its new position).

I understand that when cars make banking turns (e.g. in car races, where the track around a sharp corner is at an angle), they do it so that the inertia of the car doesn't make it skid off the track (instead, the inertia pushes the car into the angled road, increasing its traction).

But I always thought that when planes make banking turns, it's because planes can't turn left or right sharply, but *can* turn up or down sharply. (Is this incorrect? Or is the plane banking against the air? How would "banking against the air" work?

I also understand that, in theory, you can design a spaceship that can turn equally well in any direction. And so, banking turns are not *necessary*, because there is no need to reorient the craft for it to turn.

BUT, nerds on fan forums always cite banking turns as something completely ridiculous - as if the scriptwriters think that the ship should behave like a racecar. And of course it shouldnt bank for the same reason as a racecar. But if you have a ship design where it is easier to change direction sharply in the up-down axis than in the left-right axis, then isn't a "banking turn" (or something resembling it) a completely natural maneuvre? It's not banking against a road, it's just taking advantage of a design quirk (and there are logical reasons to have a design like this, aren't there? It may be impractical to have rockets sticking out every which way, or you may want to reduce the number of engines you need to build, right?)

So why do people get so upset about banking spaceships?

  • What is the "S" (inside a circle) dashboard symbol on a Holden/Vauxhall Vectra (automatic transmission)?

    Hi all,

Recently got a 1998 Holden Vectra (i think Vauxhall/Opel(?) is the company that designed them). It has a strange dashbloard light, and there is no explanation for it in the owner's manual.

It looks like an "S" with a gear-shape around it (a circle with gear teeth on the outside).

It lights up when you hit the overdrive button on the gearstick. It's default setting (when you start the car) is to be switched off.

In my previous car, the dashboard light that came on when you hit overdrive was "O/D off". So naturally, I would be inclined to think that the "S" symbol means "O/D off". However, from the way the car handles at higher speeds, I'm pretty sure that the overdrive is actually switched *on*, not off, when the "S" symbol is lit up. But it's a new car, and I am not used to all its driving quirks, so it's possible that I'm wrong (and I've never seen a car where a light came on when the overdrive was switched on before - usually the light means the overdrive is off).

So does anybody know what this symbol means?

  • Would it be possible for the Moon to hold an atmosphere?

I know that the standard answer is that the moon doesn't have enough gravity, but i have no basis for beleiving/disbeleiving this claim.

I've heard the same thing said about Mars, but then read, upon going deeper into it, that the rate of loss of an atmosphere is actualy really incredibly low, and when researchers say "Mars's weak gravity is the reason it couldn't hold it's atmosphere", apparently they actually mean "over multiple *billions* of years".

Mars's gravity is .38 of Earth's, and the moon is something like 0.15, which seems to be, at least, within the same order of magnitude.

I'd like to know, on a scale of hundred, thousands or millions of years, whether the moon could theoretically hold an atmosphere.

So, i'm looking for people in-the-know about planetary science and physics - is it theoretically possible? What are the calculations you need to work this out - i'm guessing something about figuring out the escape velocity, and then taking the pressure of Earth's atmosphere and figuring out the velocities of gas particles at that pressure, and if those velocities are above escape velocity or not - is this right? How do the equations work out?

  • What is the difference between the Apocrypha and the Dead Sea Scrolls?

I know that the Dead Sea Scrolls are supposed to contain the teachings of early Gnostic Christians, and the Apocrypha are books that were rejected from the current version of the Bible.

Are any of these the same books? Do they overlap, or were the Dead Sea Scrolls mostly burnt before the Apocrypha were stricken out of the Bible? Where they written by the same general circles of people - did Gnostics write some of the books in the Apocrypha, or did Apocryphal authors write some of the books in the Dead Sea Scrolls? Just not clear on what the relationship between the two is.

  • How many Americans are aware of the damage being done by American policy to Haiti's relief efforts right now?

We've seen a storm of "questions" from people in the US about Haiti, taking various angles - i would just, genuinely like to know, how many of you out there (especially among the "neocons") are even aware of the issues raised in this interview: http://socialistworker.org/2010/01/18/witness-to-a...

    * "In 2004, George W. Bush deposed then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and greatly weakened the connection of people to the resources of the government." ... "It's a natural disaster on top of the disaster that U.S. imperialism has imposed on this country for decades, backing one dictator after another in the interest of maintaining a source of cheap labor for U.S. corporations."

*"Hillary Clinton flew into Haiti to oversee the relief effort--supposedly. But I think her trip to Haiti tells you all you need to know: They had to shut down the airport for three hours so she could land, which meant that no actual aid flights could come in. ... And this happened at a really critical time, because we're right at that point where every extra ounce of water matters. At this point, people who have been without water are facing imminent death. But they stopped the aid shipments so Clinton could give a canned speech from Haiti about how much the U.S. is doing to help."

    * "And in any case, the U.S. government is sending more boots on the ground and more guns to help with "law and order." But this isn't what the Haitian people need. They need people with shovels, and people to give them water." ... "The U.S. needs to tell its soldiers to drop their machine guns and pick up shovels and start digging people out."

    * "When I heard that statement from Pat Robertson, after all the stress I'd been under, that just kind of broke me. I had to yell. That this earthquake was payback for kicking out the French during the Haitian Revolution? I hope that Pat Robertson can be dropped in one of the neighborhoods here, and let the people have at him."

    * "I also just read that a couple in Arkansas hit the lottery for $100 million, but that's all the Obama administration can find to help Haiti."

So? Do you hear ANYTHING about this aspect of things from the news over there? Does Fox ever mention it? Do these comments seem surprising at all?

If you're a neocon, do these observations leave you with any sense of shame?

If you're a democrat, does it give you any suspision as to the genuineness of the leftist credentials of people like Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama?

What kind of information really gets through to American voters?

  • Why would a question be removed?

A few weeks ago i asked a question; "where are CDs/DVDs produced?" - as i am trying to find some sort of lead on this issue. I'm interested because i'd like to know whether or not they are made in sweatshops, or whatnot. It's an interesting question, and it went completely unanswered. Now i have discovered that the question was simply "removed" - why? It didn't break any community guidelines, and i am entitled to something like 5 points for an un-resolved question - and this question was unresolved. Does anybody know why this would happen?

  • How do I PrintScreen in Windows XP without having to paste the screenshot into Paint in order to save it?

I would like to be able to press Printscreen while running another program (e.g. The Sims, which does not allow you to simply minimize the game and then immediately return to it), without having to close down the program and paste it into Paint before taking another screenshot. The reason is that it is extremely time-consuming when you want to take multiple screenshots, especially with some games that take a long time to load... nobody wants to sit there waiting ten minutes for the game to load, take a single screenshot, close it all down, paste the screenshot into Paint, then wait another ten minutes to load the game again to take the second screenshot. There must be a way to press "Printscreen" and know that your screenshot is being automatically saved, so you can just press it X times in a row to get X number of screenshots, and don't have to be constantly opening and closing your program.
