  • Is a 3.4 in college GPA good?

Hello! I just completed my Freshman year of college! (Phew!) I attend a small liberal arts school (ranked in the top 25 according to U.S. News). I m also double majoring in Economics and Political Science. Is this GPA good enough for top tier graduate/law schools? On a side note, does a lower GPA at a highly selective school look better than a higher GPA at a less selective/state school? I am also considering a career in Investment Banking and would appreciate any comments/advice regarding that career path. Thanks! :)

  • Is a 3.43 considered a good GPA for the first semester of college?

Also, what GPA is required for finance internships? What GPA is needed to attend a selective business school? I took 4 classes this semester at a top twenty liberal arts school; Macroeconomics (B), Intermediate Spanish 1 (A-), Calculus 1 (A-), and Biology (B+). I also plan on majoring in Economics. Thanks!

  • Chances of getting accepted at BU, BC, and Northeastern?

I attend a small private Catholic high school in New England. I come from a low income family (less than 25k/year) and attend my high school on a full scholarship. I have always dreamed of attending a good school in Boston and would love to know if I have a decent shot.

  • Is my schedule too easy for senior year?

    My schedule:

    1- Art 1

2- AP Calc Lab, Study Hall every other day

    3- World Studies

    4- Global Studies

    5- Spanish 4

    6- Religion

7- AP Bio Lab, Study Hall every other day

    8- AP Bio

I already fulfilled my English credit over the summer at the local community college in which I earned a 97 in the class.

Also would dropping art for another study hall make my senior schedule look too easy? This would make it so that I have one quaranteed study hall every day and then three on alternating days. This would give me time to do college planning and prep for the next SAT.

I plan on applying to schools such as BU, BC, Northeastern, Syracuse, UVM, WPI RPI and Clarkson.

  • Do colleges have sympathy towards lower income students?

My family earns less than 25k/year. Most of my family members have never gone to college and many are even welfare recipients. I on the other hand have larger plans. I have a 3.86 uw GPA, an 1810 SAT, as well as solid EC's. I hope to attend a selective 4-year university in Massachusetts such as BC, BU, Northeastern, etc. So my question is, do schools take into consideration that I was not offered the same opportunities to succeed as those of higher income brackets? For example, at times I would have to juggle between school and working to help get the bills paid at my home taking away from my time to study. By some miracle I have been able to juggle both activities. I was also not fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to take SAT prep classes outside of school as my family lacked the means to pay for it. Are colleges more likely to accept a student that not meet the status quo of their typical student but was able to do well regardless? I ask this question because I feel that it is grossly unfair that a majority of students at selective schools come from privileged families essentially born to succeed whereas poor students are underrepresented in the demographics of students in many universities.

  • Does taking a class at a community college look as good as an AP class?

I'm currently taking a summer English Comp class at my local community college. I did it as a way to earn guaranteed college credits and as a way to lighten my work load for next year as I'm taking three AP courses. Anyways, does this class look as good to college admissions as AP English Lit and Comp? All answers welcome. Thanks :)

  • Mental illness runs rampid on both sides of my family. How worried should I be?

My family is completely nuts. My mothers father had manic depression and schizophrenia and was a full blown alcoholic. (Actually died from Cirrhosis of the liver) My mom and my grandmother currently suffer from manic depression and bipolar disorder. Both of my moms brothers committed suicide due to their mental illnesses. One because of paranoid schizophrenia and the other because of depression. Not to mention all of the people listed above suffer and or suffered from ADD/ADHD. Since my uncles' untimely deaths my mom and grandma haven't been right. My mother is a high functioning alcoholic. My great grandmother and great grandfather both were bipolar and manic also. On that same side of the family 3 of my 2nd cousins have committed suicide. Also I only have one first cousin on that side of the family and she suffers from clinical depression and has ADD.

Onto my dads side of the family.. My dad has ADD and suffers with depression. He goes into slumps but eventually gets out of them. His mother had him at the age of 15 and put him up for adoption because he had a disability (very minor case of cerebral pasly) I never even noticed it until my mom pointed it out when I got older. From what I know both of his parents are alcoholics and that that side of the family also suffers with mental disorders.

My brother and I seem to be the only "normal" people left in the family. But I'm worried that due to my families history of alcoholism, substance abuse, and mental disorders that my brother and I are almost guaranteed to become mentally ill.

Should I be worried? If anyone could help it would be very much appreciated. :)

  • Does marijuana actually decrease a persons intelligence?

I'll admit, I smoke weed. I don't do it a lot, maybe like 20 times throughout the summer with my friends, and like 30 times throughout the entire school year mostly as a way to relieve stress. Even while smoking weed occasionally I'm still perfectly able to maintain a 4.1 GPA while taking the hardest classes, play two varsity sports, and participate in many extracurriculars (I'm a junior btw). But will smoking weed in the long run really lower my intelligence? I could understand maybe if I was a heavy user and smoked nonstop everyday.. But I don't know. Like the day after I smoke weed my memory is slightly impaired, but it's not like it's interrupting me with my everyday tasks? What's your take on the matter? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I'm going into my junior year of high school. I attend a small private Catholic high school in New England. I come from a low income family and attend my school on a full scholarship. - For my junior and senior year I will be taking 6 AP's : APUSH, AP Bio, AP Physics, AP English, AP Calc AB, AP Environmental.

    - I've worked at my family's local Bakery and Restaurant since I was 9, bussing tables, waiting tables, prepping food, working farmers markets, etc.

    - I participated in the Scholars Bowl team at my school

  • Worried about my Junior year of highschool? Any advice or tips are appreciated :)?

I'm feeling very nervous about my junior year of high school. I realize that this is the year that colleges focus on and I'm worried that I might be putting too much pressure of myself on top of the pressure from my family. So far I have maintained an A average throughout my highschool career and I want to keep it that way. Though I am worried that I may mess up this year due to my unstable family life. My parents are in the middle of a nasty divorce where my mom is doing everything in her best interest to ruin him. She's even to the point where shes ratting my dad out for some illegal things he has done in the past and it is very likely that he will be serving time. She constantly talks terribly regarding my father 24/7 and there's no way to escape it. She's recently got into a heated fight with my father where my brother got physically involved. That fight eventually led to my brother moving out and getting a restraining order on my mother. There were many similar incidents before this. My mother had also recently opened up a new business where she relies on me to help keep it running. I understand that I have to help my mom but she places so much pressure on me, a normal 16 year old just trying to live a normal life. My father also owns a restaurant, but it's sad to say that it will likely close in the next coming months. My mom also has a douchebag boyfriend who constantly belittles me and treats me as though I am his servant. My mom and him have also been fighting lately. I hate his guts but I am worried whether or not my mom can pay the bills. My grandmother has just recently died, and I haven't even had a chance to grieve over her death with all of the drama going on in my life. It feels as though my family is crumbling before my eyes. With all of this on my plate I am very concerned how it will affect my academic life. I have a very tough work load next year with a few AP classes, along with varsity basketball, and numerous other extracurriculars to focus on

  • Why do I always completely blank out during tests?

I study the material I need to know, but it seems like whenever I get to the test I just space out, then end up with terrible anxiety, take forever to finish, and end up being the last person to hand it in. I never used to be this way! It bothers me more than you know. It's soooo frustrating! I take all this time to assure that I'll do well on the test but when I get to the test itself I freak out! Can someone explain to me why this happen? It's so exhausting.. HELP ME

  • Could I get into a good college? Ivy League?

I'm a sophomore at a Catholic High School. I always try to put the maximum effort in anything I do. I try my best to be involved in both my school and community, and hope to start a community service project before my senior year. Someday I hope to be able to support my family so they won't have to work as hard as they do, which serves as one of the reasons to be successful. My freshman year was rough on my GPA. Many family issues came up at once, which led to a lower GPA than I normally strive for. I ended the year with a 3.7 GPA unweighted. This year my GPA has risen drastically. I now have a 4.0 unweighted and plan on keeping it that way. I take the most rigorous classes available and plan on taking AP classes next year. I participate in many clubs at my school. I was recently accepted into National Honor Society. I serve in the Student Government. I am a member of the National Art Society. I am a Student Ambassador, whose purpose is to give tours of the school, take on shadow students interested on going the our school, and helping set up events to attract prospective students. I'm on Scholars Bowl Team at my Highschool. Lastly, I am a member of the Year Book Committee whose purpose is to take pictures at school events, call businesses for Ads, and help create and sell the school yearbook. I play JV/Varsity Basketball at my school. This Summer I plan on attending some leadership camps such as Governors Institute for Engineering, and Boys State. I do quite a bit of community service, and don't plan on cutting back. I have work experience at my family restaurant, which serves as work experience.

Please tell me what you think! All answers welcome. Thanks! College suggestions would be great! :)
