This is our first year hunting period, and we really enjoy hunting grouse, but they seem to be very elusive. Does anybody have any suggestions/tips on hunting these birds? We hunt an area that is young woods, near 2 gravel roads and a marsh. We try and go near what we think would be good cover for grouse like thick low brush, downed trees, etc. In the mornings we hunt closer to the roads and during the mid day we go more into the woods and hunt off the trails. One person will walk the trail while the other walks thru the brush/woods. Currently we have about 2 inches of snow on the ground and its cold, usually in the teens to mid 20s for temps (fairenheit). We have deer hunter friends who go in same area we do and tell us they kick up grouse regularly just walking the trails, and while we have flushed a few and got one bird, we usually go out and dont see much at all, even when we hit the spots the hunters tell us and where we have had flushes. Any input would be greatly appreciated for us novice hunters. We live in northern WI.
