  • Why would a thicker material have a higher thermal conductivity?

For a physics experiment we had to test materials for their thermal conductivities. The formula we were given is

    k = dQ/tAT

where k is thermal conductivity, d is the thickness of the material, Q is the heat transferred, t is the time, A is the area of ice we were melting, and T is the temperature difference.

Based on this, it seems like if d is bigger, then k also is, which is what we got. We got that zincanneal was a better insulator than neoprene foam, which to me doesn't make sense, but I tihnk it was because the foam was a lot thicker than the zincanneal. All the literature I've been able to find seems to point at thicker things being better insulators, though, so I'm very confused.

  • Hand that had cactus needles in it still not recovered?

I went camping for New Years (around 3 weeks ago now) and accidentally leant my hand on a cactus when standing up from the ground. I managed to get the big spikes out and a few of the little ones, but it was dark and whilst I'd brought tweezers, I didn't bring a needle or anything to be able to get the deep ones out. The next day my pinky was really swollen and it hurt to move my hand. We were staying another night so it wasn't til two days after it happened that I was home and able to pull out the little needles by poking through my skin with a sewing needle. After I did this the swelling went down really soon after and my hand felt heaps better for a while, but recently I developed little bumps where the cactus needles were and my hand is starting to hurt again. I can't see any needles still in there, but I assume there are. Should I go to the doctor or will they come out naturally?

  • What does the 3h mean in 3h-mepyramine?

I'm writing a prac report for uni where we tested the effects of adding antagonists along with acetylcholine, and then histamine on rat and guinea pig ileum, respectively. One of the antagonists was mepyramine (which I believe is a H1-receptor antagonist?).

I've been looking up literature for research and I keep seeing mepyramine being referred to as 3h-mepyramine. Does the 3h mean anything significant? Would they still be referring to the same mepyramine I would have used in my prac?

    Thank you!

  • Is there a way to automatically change a word to something else on Microsoft Word?

I'm writing a story and two of my characters' names start with the same letter. Looking back it's a little confusing so I want to change one of their names. Is there anyway to make Word do this for me? It rings a bell that I've done something similar before, I think probably when changing something from American spelling to Australian. I can't remember how to do it at all though. Or even if there's another program that can do it, I could use that?

  • Does this part of my story make sense?

    Hey :)

I'm writing a story in which a girl and her two friends need to go on a road trip using a caravan they borrow from one of the friend's cousin. They get stopped on the way by police, who find a stash of marijuana hidden in the van, which the girls had no idea about, so they get taken to the police station. They call the cousin but he doesn't want to confess because he'd most likely have to go to jail for that much, so instead, he decides he's going to try to break them out. Since the questioning was getting them nowhere (the cousin wouldn't confess), the police decide to leave them locked up in two separate cells overnight in the police station. First, does this make sense? Would there be cells in the police station, first of all, and would they leave them there with no police there?

Next, I need a way in which the cousin can realistically break out. Since it's just a police station, the cells wouldn't be super high security.. so far I just have that he bashed the bars with the bed inside his cell until the bars bent enough to squeeze through them. But is this too simple?

Can anyone think of any other ways or do you think this is okay? The breakout isn't a really massive part in the story, so I don't need it to be a super elaborate plan or anything, just somewhat realistic :)

    Thanks!

  • How do you know which precipitate will form?

In chemistry, say if you mix 0.1M silver nitrate with 0.1M potassium hydroxide together, why do they form silver hydroxide precipitate and not silver hydroxide precipitate?

  • Genetics Questions?

These are study questions for a uni biology course. Can someone help me understand the answers? I've been looking online and having been able to find anything :/

    1) Thinking back to the developmental origins of the germ line cells in plants and animals,

what is the relative chance (plants vs animals) of a somatic mutation in a parent being

    transmitted to the progeny?

As I understand it, mutations in somatic cells aren't heritable, but I don't know if this is the answer they'd be looking for..

    2) You would like to isolate a mutant fern capable of growing in the presence of a chemical X that normally would kill a wild type plant. What part of a fern would you treat with a mutagen Y in order to be able to screen for mutant ferns within the same generation? Y our strategy should be able to identify both dominant and recessive mutations right away.

I have no idea about that one :P

  • In carbon dioxide, why aren't the oxygen atoms hybridised?

    Hello!

So I have an exam on Saturday, and I was going through my notes about hybridisation. there was some example somewhere where a central atom was spy hybridised, and then the outer Cl atoms were also sp3 hybridised. They made it sound like you hybridise the outer atoms too.

However, when I was doing the study questions, we had to draw carbon dioxide, and in the answer they give, while the carbon is sp hybridised, the oxygen orbitals stay as just their normal s and p orbitals, and don't hybridise into sp3.

    Can anyone please explain this?

    Thank you so much!

  • If you speak English and Spanish, how easily can you navigate in Brazil?

I can speak English and Spanish both fluently, but I don't know any Portuguese. I know Spanish is somewhat similar, and since English is the international language, I'm assuming there would be a lot of people who speak it?

If I was t visit Brazil, do you think I'd be able to understand some Portuguese and be able to navigate reasonably well?

  • What's a good plucking song to learn on guitar that's a similar difficulty to 'Fast Car'?

I want to learn a song that's difficult enough to still sound cool, but that won't be too hard or take too long. I can already play 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman, and I want to learn one that's similar difficulty :D Hopefully with no bar chords! And relatively well known :)

  • How do you differentiate this?!?

I am trying to solve a question for a maths assignment and it is so impossible!! One small part in it...I think I have to differentiate this:

    A = 2x ( 9 - (x + 1)^2 ) ^0.5

My friend has an answer but I can't see how he got there at all! I'd use the product rule, but he used the chain rule, and after, the product rule, and it doesn't make sense! I will love you forever if you help me, I am so desperate to understand it!!!

  • Is this japanese sentence okay?

ブリズベンに south bank の観覧車 は 一番大き観覧車です。

It's meant to say something like, the South Bank ferris wheel is the largest ferris wheel in Brisbane.

Or would it sound better as...

    south bank の観覧車 はブリズベンの 一番大き観覧車です。

Which to me looks more like, 'The South Bank ferris wheel is Brisbane's largest ferris wheel.
