Are we owed our full damage/security deposit?
When we moved out of our apartment we called our landlord on the 24th of October 2011 to let her know we were pending on a house and that if we got it we would be moving out at the end of November. We let her know that we wouldn't know about the house until the 2nd of November 2011. She congratulated us on buying a home and told us to just let her know as soon as we did and that would be enough notice for her. On November 3, 2011 I wrote her an official letter stating we would be gone from the apartment no later than the 30th of November 2011. We handed in our keys and did a walk-through inspection with an agent of hers on November 28th, 2011.
When we hadn't received our security deposit back we started calling her. We tried her twice (including once on Dec 30, 2011) and finally talked to her on January 5th, 2012. At that point she told us that because we gave our notice a little bit late and because she wasn't able to rent out the unit she felt we should split the damage deposit. She said that because over the phone wasn't a great way to deal with it, that she would give us a day to think it over.
We talked to her again on January 6th, 2012 and we told her that because she was just bring this up now, over a month after we had vacated the premises, that we felt it wasn't fair to hold back our deposit. We believed that we should get it all back since she or her husband never said anything during the final month we lived there (or the month of December) in all the times we had talked over the phone or in person. She then asked our address for where she should send the cheque.
When we received our cheque from her she deducted the entire damage deposit writing "after discussing the damage deposit with you today to try to come to an agreement on the damage deposit due to your late written notice here is your statement of account... November 3/11 late written notice, Dec. rent due: -$895.00"
Under section 46 of Alberta’s Residential Tenancies Act do we have any cause to get back the full (or even a partial) amount of the security deposit?
3 AnswersRenting & Real Estate9 years agoShare your love of Books and Reading!?
I just started a job at a bookstore and am looking to expand my knowledge by reading some new stuff outside my own comfort/ go-to zone of books. I'd love to hear what books people are recommending!
Please try to post the author's name if you know it. Also if you could let me know what the genre or type is (romance, biography, crime, chick lit, teen, etc) that would very helpful as well.
Any extra details like: other authors who have books that are similar to your ones you loved, or mini reviews would be fabulous as well.
Thank you for sharing!!
2 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoGreat NYC/USA Women's Clothing Stores?
I'm going to New York City and I am wondering what are some good clothing stores like Canada's Ricki's [http://www.rickis.com/by-category/sweaters/high-ri... ] and Dynamite [http://www.dynamite.ca/ProductsDetail.aspx?pId=100... ]
I would like to get some cute summer clothes and would love to get things on sale (dresses & pants for under $30; tops & skirts for under $20). I also love that dark purpley-blue color, so stores that have a lot of that in their collection would be great to know about. If you have any suggestions of department stores in the States or boutiques specifically in NYC I'd really appreciate it. If you know of the address on Manhattan that would be of even greater help.
2 AnswersNew York City1 decade agoWhat is the best camera for my money?
I'm looking for some information on how to make an informed decision about purchasing a new camera.
I want to start up photography as a hobby and seeing as though my very old digital camera has died on me I'm in need of a new one. First I'm not sure what I need in a camera as far as mega-pixels and optical & digital zoom is concerned, though I'm thinking 8 MP with at least a 4x optical zoom. And second I have really no idea what other qualities of a camera would put it ahead of the competition.
And then if anybody has any suggestions or recommendations of cameras in the $100- 150 range I'd gladly accept those (with or without links). I'm in Canada if that helps at all.
Thanks for all your help Yahoo! Answers folk!
5 AnswersCameras1 decade agoWhere do I find the maintenance records for my car? ?
I recently bought a used car. There were no records that came with the car from the previous owner and it didn't come with an owners manual. I just picked a manual up from the dealer though to keep track of future repairs.
Other than the stuff I had done to it myself, is there any way to find out what has been done to the car? I want to see when the last time the oil, etc. was changed or any other maintenance details like that.
I'd especially like to know if there was someplace I could get that information for free (or at the very least very cheap).
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoCanadian Politics: Boring the already apathetic population?
Below the boarder they are having a history-in-the-making 2008 election. Now I know that we can't compete with that, which asks the question why we're even wasting the money having this election at this time. It certainly isn't to inject the country with some exciting change and thrilling debate (unless you count the slander filled advertisements & constant barrage of apologies).
Which begs the question, are Canada's political parties trying to make us more indifferent to the democratic process? They continually choose uninspiring leaders who manipulate the people with lies and fear-mongering, and only make "promises" to attract votes.
The 'average Canadian' has no passion for this election. We don't care. And the few who do, have no candidate who embodies their interests.
Am I right, or am I wrong?
Do you care? Do you have a candidate who defies the norm? Do you believe in a political party? Do you know who you will vote for? Or on Oct 14th will you even vote?
2 AnswersCurrent Events1 decade ago"Handmaid's Tale"- more powerful in the post 9-11 World?
**Please note that there are some SPOILERS in the details below.
I read "The Handmaid's Tale" back in high school as part of my AP-English curriculum and at the time thought it was impossible for anything like that to happen. There is no way that we would let women's rights be destroyed like that. I was almost angry at the ridiculousness of it.
I just re-read the book, and there was no anger but fear this time. I found it absolutely bone chillingly frightening. This dystopian future could easily be ours. Since being written in 1985, many of the steps that lead to that totalitarian society have already slowly been adopted as the norm. And the main fuel for the removal of these freedoms: the president shot and congress machine-gunned down- allegedly by Islamic fanatics.
If you've read the book recently or in the past, do you think that this book has become more relevant in this day and age? Could this be a viable future? Or is it just another fiction book? What's your opinion?
4 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoFuel economy for 06 Subaru Impreza?
For anybody who has an Impreza Ri/RS (so not the turbo), what is the average cost to fill up a tank? How many kilometers (or miles) can you get on a tank of gas?
I'm looking to purchase the vehicle and with the insurance being so high, I wanted to know what gas costs were. With fuel the price it is, a quality car may not be worth it.
For more info on the car please check out my question about buying the car: http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Av...
Thanks!

2 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoWhat kind of car would you buy...?
... If you had $8000 and were looking for a newer (2000+) used car?
What kind of car would you avoid- no matter what the price?
4 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoHelp- I'm Clueless about Cars! What do I look for when buying a used car?
There are some things I know, like: I'll need to take it in to an independent mechanic to be inspected, as well as get the VIN# checked out for accidents, & take it for a test drive. I'm looking to get a newer (2000-06), Automatic, used car and have a budget of about $8000.
But that's about it! I have no mechanical experience/ car knowledge. So what I want to know is:
What is a good type of car?
What is the range/limit of kilometers for a good car?
What kinda car has good gas milage?
What kind of cars should be avoided because they need alot of repairs?
What else do I need to think about before I buy a car?
The more I know before I get into the car lot, the better chance I'll have of not getting pushed around by a salesman who wants to sell me a piece of junk. I'd like to get a car that'll last me. If you have answers to any of these questions I would be so grateful!
8 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoDo people really have nothing better to do than post ridiculous made up stories on here?
What is the point of writing these fictional tales of woe?! I think the next step for Yahoo Answers is to make a new category called "Attention Please" and all the little children who want pity for their make believe drama can write it there.
6 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoIs this car a good deal: 93 Ford Tempo?
The car is a 93 Ford Tempo with 96,800km (aprox 60,000 miles). 4 Door Sedan; Automatic w/air conditioning, Tires are in good shape; White w/ some rust on one side.
$1800.00
I'd be using it primarily for leisure driving on weekends and evenings in the city, as well as for making a three hour, 552 km/ 342 miles roundtrip on the highway about once a month.
I know nothing about cars so I'm not sure if this is even a good deal- let alone if the car itself is any good. So any advise would be super helpful!
8 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoWhat is the best way to ask my boss to send to me to a work related seminar?
I recieved a notice about a workshop that I think would benifit both myself and my place of employment. I'd really like to attend only I'm not sure how to ask my bosses. I don't really have an immediate supervisor either so I'm not sure who to ask (the company president, the general manager or the controller).
If I did figure out who to ask, what would be the best way to ask to be sent to this one day seminar. I'd still like to be paid for the day and I'd like the company to pay for the workshop too. Is this asking too much? Any ideas how to say this more proffesionally?
4 AnswersSmall Business1 decade agoHow do I stop persistant, non buisness related/personal callers from calling the workplace?
I'm a receptionist and I've had some problems with a man who has been repeatedly calling our office wishing to speak to one of our employees [whom I'll call JD]. JD has asked me to put this man to voicemail- which he refuses and just calls back later. Today I was informed that due to legal matters that have not yet been resolved JD's lawyer doesn't want them to talk. I want to be professional, polite and also keep myself from becoming involved. This is what I plan to say next time he calls, do you think it will work?
'I'm afraid JD is not taking personal calls this time. If you'd like I could put you through to thier voicemail and they could get back to you at a time when they are not occupied with work matters.'
OR
'JD is not dealing with personal matters at the moment. I would guess that they would be more available after buisness hours and away from work. But if you left a voice message they'd be able to let you know when and where would be a more appropriate time to reach them.'
