I've been riding motorcycles since 1982. I also like to tinker with vehicles and machines in general, which is my motivation to look for better work and a mortgage so I can have my own hobby shop. Recently moved to the East coast to find better work. Other interests: philosophy, voracious reading (especially SF), film, hiking (urban and rural), food, Bier.

  • How to get into trucking?

I'm wanting to get a CDL-A and be a company driver for the next few years. No family, so hometime is not as big a deal for me, but benefits would be nice to have again! What are the best companies to work for that do their own training? I'm considering Stevens among others.

  • How to go about getting a passport?

I'm a US national. I haven't ever had a passport. The last time I went outside the borders we still had the freedom to do so without needing more than a drivers' license and voter reg card. What does it take to get a passport these days? Costs? Supporting documents? How long the process takes?

  • Trucking: Life on the road?

Do any transport companies let their drivers "live in" the company tractor for the couple days off every couple of weeks, or want the unit back for maintenance or another run? I know that I'd live in the truck while on runs, but would I need to rent a room or have a "permanent" residence in between?

  • What are problem areas on 80s-90s BMWs?

I'm considering getting a used Bimmer. Can't afford new, no way, no how, but I like the cars. What are the expensive problem areas on 1980s-90s 5 and 7 series that I should look for on a car I'm considering? I know the regular maintenance will tend to be more than for a Toyota, but what about the components that are a major expense to fix that seem to commonly fail on these cars?

  • Throttle Position Sensor sensitivity on Oldsmobile?

Just checked voltages on my TPS. Car is '90 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1 V6. Reference voltage=5.1V. Ground=good. Signal goes from .9V (idle position) to 4.05V (full open). Book calls for a range of .45V to 4.5V.

How sensitive to this output would the computer be? The car starts, but runs like cr@p, gets 55% of the fuel mileage it used to, shifts rough, unresponsive. Just changed plugs, air filter, etc. Do I need a new TPS? I can't afford to just throw $$$ at this problem, so must gather info from all available sources.

  • How can I break into the travel industry?

I love motorcycling & road trips in general. I have sales/management experience. I have no family to tie me down and can relocate, even overseas. How can I get a job in the travel industry, like being a tour guide or doing logistics? What kind of agencies/companies/organizations are hiring? What other qualifications would I need?

  • What are the hardware differences between hybrid and mountain bicycles?

How feasible is it to go from mountain (fat tire) to hybrid (thin low drag tire) functions? Can I just change the wheels or is it more involved?

  • Old Beemer values: Where can I find such info?

I'm interested in a 1973 BMW R75/5 (not a /6). I've tried kbb.com and they have nothing. Does anyone know of a source where I can get values for this model. It could be a really good winter project.

  • Toll sharing for bikes.?

In the northeast there're many toll roads, bridges & tunnels. The Port Authorities don't give discounts for bikes, even though we use far less space than Status Urban Vehicles. If I'm riding with another rider and we pull up to the toll gate (assume an automated one) side by side on our bikes, one of us pays the toll for one car, and we pull out side by side, how likely is it that we get ganked? Is this even illegal?

  • Job search advice for older seekers?

Has anyone over 40 out there had good results using any particular tactic to get interviews and work? I seem to have hit a wall. I've also found that having an education is usually a minus, which says a lot about the country in general. I've been in sales for a few years but want to get back into a more "behind the scenes" or technical line of work like I used to do.

  • What does it cost to get into sailing, boat ownership, cruising? ?

I'm familiar with the costs of cars, trucks, motorcycles and even a bit of airplanes. What are the licensing requirements and costs of learning to sail? What are the insurance requirements, especially in the U.S.? What are the registration/documentation costs and requirements? Maintenance expenses = ? There are plenty of books that address these matters for airplane ownership and flying, but I can't find any that answer these for sailing.

The kind of sailing I'd like to do would be first, starting out with a dinghy on inland lakes. Later, if finances, health, time, etc. permit doing some blue water cruising around North & South America. Some of it possibly single-handed as experience permits.
