  • Dog / puppy?

    hi

I have a 10.5 month old pup, she's a small dog, built like a small jack Russell but a crossbreed, when should I start mixing the puppy with the adult food to get her stomach used to the adult food - she is fully grown.

    Thanks

  • Puppy fear?

    Hi

I have a 7 month old puppy who is quite timid. Today we had my family round an she was asleep on the chair, before I could catch either of them a toddler ran up and grabbed the puppy. The pup turned, growled and snapped at the toddler, I grabbed the dog and remove her from the situation which probably wasn't the best thing to do but it was a bit rushed. The puppy has been timid but never agressive before. Anyway she then went on to growl at someone else (an adult) and growled at the same child again, although she was fine with the others in the house. She is a jack Russell cross spaniel. Any sensible help would be appreciated. She is enrolled in training classes and loves older children

    Thanks

  • Crate training a dog?

    Hi,

I have an adult dog who is not crate trained and absolutely hated it when we attempted (he is a rescue dog and we are not sure what sort of treatment he had before we got him). Anyway he's fine without the crate, but I will be getting a puppy in about four months, which I do want to crate train.

My current dog is a male spaniel / bassett and the new dog will be a female staff. I want to crate train the staff, but do not want her to get territorial with my current dog. My current dog is fine in a crate as long as the door isn't shut.

Any tips on how to crate train the puppy without upsetting the other dog?

When they are left alone the puppy will be in the crate and my current dog (who is 3) will be left out, although they will be in the same area.

    Thanks!

  • Dogs with separation anxiety?

    Hi

Whenever I leave my dog alone he destroys the house. He is taken for an hour long run before I leave for work, then I come home at lunch to walk him again but it doesn't seem to help.

He has kong filled with peanut butter a treat ball and plenty of toys and I bought him a thundershirt which seems to have helped a bit but not resolved. I feed him on nature diet so he doesn't get the rubbish in other foods.

He doesn't follow me round the house when we are in and is quite happy to be on his own in the house as long as someone else is in. We cannot crate him as he hurts himself trying to escape.

I have tried herbal calming tablets and gradually leaving and coming back but nothing has helped!

I was considering getting another dog to see if this helps (I would like a second dog anyway) and my friends dog is having puppies. My current dog is a rescue who is 3 and we have had him for a year and a half. Apparently he did always live with other dogs and I thought that getting a puppy (and crate training her) might be a good idea so my current dog is the dominant one.

Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated

  • Car fuel consumption getting worse and smoking from exhaust?

Hi, I own a Rover 200, 1.8VI and recently I have noticed that the fuel consumption has got dramatically worse, I am not driving it any differently and put in a full tank every pay day. It is also smoking from the exhaust, with quite a strong smell, sort of sweet smelling. I thought possibly the head gasket but it is not overheating. The fuel consumption has massively increased, even from last week. Any ideas?

  • How to move house with a dog?

I am moving house in a couple of months and we have had our dog for around 8 months and he suffered from quite bad separation anxiety when we first got him home. We have got over that now, however we are moving house in two months. The house we are moving to is a totally different layout and where we will be leaving him when we are out will not be at the front door where it currently is (he gets the hall stairs and landing). I am going to get him a dap collar and put it on a week before we start the move. He is two years old. How and when should we start leaving him and any tips on how to make this as stressless as possible for him?

    Thanks

  • Best place for a distance learning degree?

    Hi

I am looking to do a distance learning degree in view of completing a pgce once its complete. It needs to be distance learning as I cannot quit work to go to university, also I would need student finance for the fees. I was wondering if anyone has experience of this and where the best place to study is. I am aware of Open University but I also know there are other unis that offer this.

  • How to train on a lead and recall?

Hi, my dog is half bassett hound so if he gets a sniff of something he`s off, he also tries to do this on a short lead. As well as chasing anything that moves. Basically because of this I can't let him off the lead. I have a long training lead to use in the fields so he gets a run but ideally id like to be able to let him off. Any ideas or will his instincts be too much?

  • Do DAP collars work for dogs?

Hi my dog suffered quite bad separation anxiety when i first got him from the rescue centre, he is over most of it now, stopped being disruptive, eats and drinks as normal when we're out and plays with the toys i leave him. I have been speaking to our neighbour today and she said that he barks for about an hour and a half after we leave, then doesn't make a sound afterwards apart from normal things a dog would bark at like someone knocking the door. I don't leave him for a stupid amount of time and I was wondering what peoples experiences are with DAP collars?

  • My dog is scratching the door frames when I'm out?

    Hi

My dog can open doors so we have had to put locks on them so he can't get into rooms when we're out because he goes round eating everything. Anyway we keep him in the hall stairs and landing only when we're out and he has taken a fascination with trying to get into the living room.

The door is locked but he has started scratching at the door frame (destroying it) and bent the door handle out. He managed to get in once and since then he's been scratching away. Any ideas how to stop this?

He is a rescue dog and gets very distressed and hurts himself trying to chew out of a crate so that's a no go

  • Anyone used serene-um for dogs?

Hi, my dog causes utter detestation to my house when I'm out, I have bought these serene-um for him and was wondering if anybody had tried them?

I can't crate him because he just hurts himself in it and barks, he managed to break the metal bars and cut his face open when I left him in it, and I was persistant with the training.

    Thanks

  • My dog has just started chasing motorbikes?

Hi, I have had my dog about five months and he is one and a half, he is a basset crossed with a springer spaniel. He has just started trying to chase motorbikes, he is always on the lead around them but it is getting dangerous, I have had to stop walking him on the flexi lead on the roads as it unclipped once and he very nearly got ran over as it was a busy dual carriageway, luckily (at the expense of my hand) I managed to grab the lead before he ran into the road.

I tell him off and tell him to leave but its like he's zoned out, he gets plenty of stimulation on his walks and gets a minimum of two a day, also has lots to do at home. I don't know anyone with a motorbike to try and desensitise him so I'm at a bit of a loss with it. It's a shame to take him off the flexi lead cus he loves to sniff around when he's walking.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions other than a shock collar?

    Thanks

  • How to stop my dog barking at people?

Hi, I have had my rescue dog about two months, he is about one and a half and a springer spaniel, beagle cross. I have had him neutered. He is a lovely little dog, the only two problems are when we're out walking he barks at people and other dogs, he shows absolutely no signs of aggression (I've owned a few dogs and know the signs) just very vocal.

He makes himself look aggressive but he isn't at all. When he gets near a dog and has a sniff he stops barking.

Another problem is he has started destroying things when we're out, we don't leave him a massive amount of time and I always walk him for at least an hour before I go out. HE is not destroying anything like chairs and carpets yet, just bedding and lose things, most recently a calculator. I cannot crate him because he gets very distressed, chews through the bars within a matter of minutes and sticks his head through. He cut his face last time so it is dangerous for him. We tried locking him in the kitchen, but learned he can open doors, we then blocked the door but he destroyed the door frame, and cut his feet. We have it all on video so we know exactly how he is hurting himself. I've tried hiding treats for him, leaving him fun things to do, but he's not very food motivated so its difficult because he'd much prefer to dismantle a remote control. I am not willing to leave him in the back garden because of the area we live in.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
