My wife has three...well, four now as she is getting one as I write this... tattoos. She had all of them before we married. She had one on her upper back reworked for us because the original was symbolic of her first marriage and she chose to alter it for me (I made no demands of her to do it). I have an appreciation of well done work, but I do not want tattoos on myself and I have explained that though I have grown accustom to her existing work, I do no feel comfortable with her getting any more. In spite of this, she keeps asking and has indicated that she wants 7 (!) more. She has just gotten her fourth on her ankle. I know that each one of these are symbolic to her, but I see it as a permanent reminder of how my feelings don't matter when it comes to things she strongly desires. I ask here what the thinking is in her head because I am not one who has tattoos, so I don't have the mindset to understand why the attraction is so strong as to threaten a marriage. For those with experience, how have you handled this?
