Love to Josie and Cocoa!

Favorite Answers16%
Answers500

Let's see, I will be 16 in November. I am a trainer to my horses Josie and Cocoa. I fell in love with Josie. She is 2. Cocoa is roughly 3. They are both my "projects." They were pieces of work when I started with them, and now they are angels, most of the time. I plan on being a horse trainer later on in life, and I won't stop until I am. I have a variety of other animals, which includes my lovely four dogs, gorgous six cats, three ducks, and a hermit crab. I study horses all the time, and I always have a magazine or book of them in my hands. My favorite horse trainer is Clinton Anderson. Ask me anything, I will answer without lying, for I have nothing to hide. And I shall not hide anything to keep from upsetting someone.

  • Wormers for Bots? And Another?

What worming paste do you use to treat and prevent bots? I can't think of it.

And, just for fun, what wormers do you use on your horses? I use a rotation of Safe-Guard, Zimectrin Gold, and something else that I can't think of the name of...

  • Foundering? Permanent?

My neighbor is selling this great little mare for $500. The only problem is that she foundered a few months ago. We went and looked at her, and she seems fine, like she has recovered well. But I'm worried that if I go to buy her, and start to ride her again, she will founder again. So my question is, can horses recover completely from foundering, or no?

  • Clinton Anderson's Walkabout Tour?!?

So yesterday I got a complimentary admission for the November 6th & 7th tour stop in Tennessee. I was oh so very excited! And now my aunt wants me to give her my second ticket, which I told her I would gladly do if she drives up there and pays for the hotel, lol (Kidding).

I haven't completely gotten a yes or no from my mom on whether or not I'm going, but I hope that they will let me, because on the program for next year, it says nothing about him coming anywhere near my home:(.

So my question is this- Have you ever gone to the Walkabout Tour? If so, did you have fun?

I went last year, after I mysteriously won two tickets from a talk show (still trying to figure that out). We was just there for Saturday, but it was SO cool. My mom bought me a stick and string for my birthday.

And a legit question, if the whole entire 'did you go' one is not good enough-

Does your horse walk through water when you are riding?

My old horse would do his best to avoid going anywhere near water when I was riding him, but when he was just roaming the pasture, he would wade into the pond. And I couldn't get him to walk 20ft near a small puddle!

  • My Saddle Keeps Slipping?! Need Help?

So I am currently breaking my filly. I am having to use my extremely old, worthless saddle. My other, less old, but still pretty worthless saddle pinches with her high withers. And I of course use my best saddle pad.

Last Saturday, I did my routine warm up, lunged her a little, and had her saddled up. When my step-dad was saddling her, she waited patiently and all. I went to test it out, and discovered that the girth still was not tight enough. So after several readjustments and several testing, I decided that it was nice and tight. So then I lunged her again for a little, and tested the saddle out. It seemed pretty secure, and the girth 'seemed' like it was doing it's job. Just to be on the safe side, I used a gate to mount up. Then my step dad put her on the lunge line(we don't have a round pen) and I just walked her around him, doing turns, stops, and etc. When I went to get off 20 minutes later, I just dismounted my usual way, and as I slung down, The saddle slid just a bit. It worried me a bit, but I did not think about it all too much.

Then, the next day, we did everything all over again. I decided that we would do a little trot to teach her the cues, and on the last time I asked her to trot, she spooked, reared, and when she slammed down, I fell forward. My step dad pulled her more towards him. After I landed on the ground, I sat up and saw that the saddle had somehow slid all the way around her.

Now I'm trying to figure out, how can the saddle, saddle pad, girth, and all of that fit other horses of nearly the same exact build, but not this one specific horse?

I'm going to start riding with my mom's breast collar, and I'm going to get my flank cinch. I am trying to figure out though, could it maybe my saddle pad that is making the saddle slide? It was just a cheap one that I picked up from my local trade day, so it is not of the GREATEST quality in the world. It has a felt bottom, with a strange, top material that seems like it might be slick.

So, my question is this, after a really long story, sorry about that by the way, is that IF it is my saddle pad that is making her saddle slide, is there anything I can do? Like use a saddle blanket or something over it? Or do I need to buy a better saddle pad?

Thanks, and please no rude comments.

  • Teaching Tricks? (STUPID 20 CHARACTERS)?

I want to teach Cocoa, and later Josie, a couple tricks, like stand on a crate, bow, say yes and no, hug, kiss, lay down, and rear (on the ground). Does anyone know how to teach these things? Or know of sites that I can find to teach them? Thanks...!

  • Teaching Horses To Pick Up..?

I am going to by moving my 2 yr old filly to a different place. The only problem is that she refuses to pick her feet up to get in the trailer... UGH! The only trailers I have access to are stock trailer step-ups, no ramps. I've made her walk/trot over limbs and stuff, but that does not help. Of course, it does not help that during her weaning process, she was forced on the trailer 2x. I was hoping that if I could teach her to pick her feet up on cue and put them on the trailer, I might be able to get her into the trailer. So does anyone know how to teach a horse to pick their front feet up on a cue? It would be a lot of help.

    Thanks!

  • I Need A New Saddle?!?

So I have two mares, one of riding age, and one that I have been breaking. Both are quarter horses, and I ride western. The saddles I have fits the ONE horse well enough(but not the greatest.) But the other has high withers, and they pinch her. I am looking for a type of saddle that can fit many different horses. But it has to be kind of cheap(I am looking for used saddles.) So my question is this- is there some kind of saddle that fits the shape of several different horses? Thanks, and please no rude comments.

  • There's This Filly(Want To Save)?

The granddaughter of a mare that we had stays in the pasture with her mother(not yet weaned, but of weaning age). She is wild, as no one has messed with her. She allows me to brush my fingers up against her nose, and I am the only one who she will let into her space. A few months back, I noticed she started getting a hernia. No one would let me tell her owner, who never came to check on his horses. When he did finally, the filly's hernia was like double of a golf ball size. He called the vet, and the vet said that it would cost like $700-$800. He said he didn't have that kind of money, so now he is just going to let her sit out in the pasture. Now I don't know anything about hernias, but I know this is deadly. I of course don't have that kind of money laying around, so I can't directly pay for the surgery. And I can't get a job(done tried.) But I think that because this guy was once upon a time a friend of ours, he might sell the filly to me for like $50. But I don't want to bring this up to him, until I can find the money for the surgery. My question is, does anyone know of place(s) that I can try to get to donate some money to help pay for the surgery? Or a line of vets that would help out and lower the cost? I'm sure that this does not make sense to everyone out there, but there is just something about her that I don't want to die.

If anyone can help me out by giving me some information or anything I would be very grateful, so thank you and please no rude comments.

  • Very Light And Mild Curb?

So I am looking for a very light and mild curb for one of my horses. I think that it might have been a curb bit that she was broke with. I am going to try a few of my other bits with her first, but I think I am probably going to end up having to use a curb bit. The only problem is- I don't know anything about what to look for in a curb. Don't anybody lecture me on how to use one and that I shouldn't use one. I have used them hundreds of times before, just never on one of my horses, and they were not my bits. And before this, I've never had to find my own bits, someone did it for me, and the last bit I've needed was years ago. In fact, today was the first day I've ever bought a bit.

So my question is, what kind of curb bit is light, and mild?

Thanks, and please no rude comments.

  • Starting 4-H At My Age?

My family wants me to look into 4-H. They said that I need socialization, and that being in some kind of group would be best for me. Although, I think they are 100% wrong, I am willing to look into 4-H and stuff to get them off my back. The problems with that is-

    1) I know nothing about 4-H

    2) I am going to be 16 in 2 months.

Should I go on ahead and look into 4-H, or would it kind of waste my time, due to age and lack of knowledge?

Thanks, and please no rude comments.

  • Dead Hermit Crab Due to Molting Disturbances?

Well, it all started last night. I watered my hermit crab, then went to check on him. Usually when I put him in the water, he comes out of the shell. He didn't do it, so I picked it up and sprayed it with mist, still he did not come out. So I put him by his food in hopes that he would come out, at least to go hide again. When I checked on him an hour later, he was hanging out of his shell barely moving. I noticed he was very pale, so I put him back. Later on, I checked on him again, and when i picked him off, like 2 of his limbs fell off. But I thought I still saw movement, so I put him back. This morning, I noticed that he had molted, and that he was still moving. So I left him be. I was just wondering- what are the chances of him dying because of my upsetting him? I haven't had a hermit crab to molt, so I did not know what signs to look for. And I hadn't any sand for him to dig into because we had not yet got any. Thanks, and please no rude comments.

  • What Breed Do You Think She Is?

    This is Cocoa.

    Info-

    Age- approx. 3 yrs.

    Height- Approx. 14.3 hh

    Pics-

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/miijosiecocoa/sets/72...

I am sure she is at least part Quarter horse. The reason why I ask is I am going to try to rename her, but I have to find a name that Mom likes because Cocoa does not match. And I like to have names kind of sort of matching the breed- mustangs, spanish; arabians, arab; etc.

Thanks, and please no rude comments.

  • Bit Guards In Training?

If you were using a loose ring snaffle (or something like it that pinches) for breaking a horse, would you put bit guards on it if you had some? Or would you leave it alone? Why? Just curious, thanks!

  • Really a Training Bit?

I was just looking at bits for some reason and came across this one that says "training bit."

    http://www.horse.com/item/5-inch-snaffle%E2%80%A6

Does it really look like a trainning bit to you, I mean I guess I just can't decide.... But what aggravates me is that they put training bit in the title, but nothing else! In the product summary no brand, no reason why it's a training bit, etc....

  • Missing a homeschooling class, maybe foreign language?

I just started my homeschooling. I am in 10th grade, and this is my first year in homeschooling. The place we go through requires me to have six classes. So far I have World Literature, Bible Study, Geometry, Biology, and Economics. Which brings me to five. So I need to find another class. I was thinking a foreign language, but the problem is that it would have to have online curriculum, and I would have to teach myself. Oh, and it would have to be cheap because I am probably going to have to pay for it myself. So is there any cheap online courses for foreign languages? Thanks!
