What is the best photo editing software for my computer illiterate grandmother?
I bought my grandmother a digital camera and by some miracle she can actually use it. To print her photos, I usually take her to Walmart, which is a cool enough way for us to spend time together but I'd like to try having her sit at the computer and taking our time rather than feeling rushed when there is a line to use the photo kiosk at the store.
Yes, I could touch everything up myself but she likes to get involved. Hence I am looking for some extremely basic software designed for the most illiterate of computer users. The software in the Walmart photo kiosk is awesome. You couldn't screw anything up if you tried and it has some nice options for basic editing, cropping, borders, etc. Something similar to that for the PC would be perfect. If she has a picture that she really wants but is a horrible train wreck, I can edit it myself.
Thanks in advance. I always pick a best answer.
6 AnswersSoftware10 years agoWhere can I find a good TV information site?
Here are features that I want and do not have in a TV site:
-An eye on upcoming new TV series with good descriptions and trailers.
-Reviews on TV shows perhaps even from multiple site and certainly multiple reviewers (preferably staff reviewers)
-Strong community that likes to discuss the shows.
-Excellent database of older series that were highly rated.
-Recommendations based on what I like and don't like.
What I need but have and wouldn't mind in one site:
-A good accurate TV guide. Good grid. Can click for show info or episode info. Let's me know whether an episode is new or not and actually be correct.
-Actor bios
-Niesen ratings (or whatever) to let me know how popular my shows are.
And any and all other things TV.
I always pick a bet answer. Thanks in advance.
2 AnswersComedy1 decade agoAre there any sites that advise parents on the amount of adult content in books?
I am looking for a website that advises parents on the amount of adult content (sex, violence, language, etc) that a book might contain.
I am buying my daughter a lot of books similar to Twilight and there are two types of vampire books: 1) candy-apple sparkly and 2) vampires who rip out throats and have intense sex. Even without me being a proactive parent, my daughter wouldn't want to read the second. I would though. :)
There are plenty of websites that do this for movies. Most don't have a rating system but even IMDB will describe scenes that they consider something viewers would want to know about in advance in terms of adult content.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. I always pick a best answer.
1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade agoWhat is a good country for an American to live/retire in?
I simply want to live someplace cheap. I know I can do this in America to a pretty significant extent but I would simply like to live abroad.
I have heard and read stories of Thailand, Philippines, DR, etc. "$300/mo includes a nice furnished apartment, a houskeeper who cooks, etc etc etc." Sounds great.
Here's what I'd like:
-Relatively safe. I don't need it to be like the Midwest burbs in the 50's, I don't want to get jacked by gangs of gun-toting kids every time I go out.
-Stable high-speed internet. DSL+ speeds. I don't mind 10 minutes of downtime a week, but my income depends on me to be on 8+ hours a day. Losing my connection often would cost me a lot. Same goes for power of course.
-Reasonable outings. A couple of restaurants that aren't completely disgusting would be fine. A movie theater would be great even if the big feature films are a month behind the US. My significant entertainment needs can come from taking vacations to the US or even weekends to the more touristy towns.
What I don't care about:
-Buying a home. Mansions for $30K? Ok, maybe but not a priority. I'm happy to rent for the rest of my life.
-Citizenship. I can stay an American, go dual or become a legal citizen. It doesn't matter to me.
-Language. I'll learn whatever I need to even if it is on a basic conversational level.
-The beach/major tourist area. That would be great but if it means paying the same prices that I would in the burbs of metropolitan areas of California then the point is defeated.
Links, real insight, etc would be amazing. I always pick a best answer. Thanks in advance.
2 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoWii Remote Accuracy Problems?
I am in a Wii Bowling league at my local bar. The problem that we are having is that all of the remotes have become less accurate. They each became this way one at a time over the course of a year, so it probably isn't something else like the sensor bar.
Let me give you a specific example. Some people, when throwing the ball in Wii Bowling (Wii Sports, not Resort) will release it late and throw it in the air. The ball hardly curves at all making each throw very predictable and consistent. It has less pin action, but whatever. The ball does still have a certain amount of natural hook to it. It's about a pin and a half or so. However, with the bad remotes the ball has a delayed release when we let go of the B-button trigger and the ball goes dead straight and perhaps even a bit slower it seems. Of course I can adjust to this dead straight ball by moving less to the right but a dead straight ball has significantly less action allowing for very few strikes.
If I do a more realistic throw from the far right allowing for a lot of curve and keeping the ball on the ground, it seems to be pretty accurate. Fortunately for me I can bowl perfect games this way as well as the in the air method.
I also have this problem with Wii Tennis.
This leads me to believe that the emitter on the remotes have lost their "peripheral vision" for lack of a better term. When I release the ball with a" normal" ground throw, the remote is just below a perfectly straight plane with the ground hence almost pointing directly at the sensor bar. When I do a high release for an air throw, the remote is close to pointing directly in the air. One thing that I noticed with this on the bad remotes is that I get that error letting me know that I am releasing the ball too late. It happened to me more than a dozen times last night when usually it doesn't happen at all.
When I bring my remotes from home, my accuracy is dead on and responds well to wide angle motions.
Here is what I have tried:
--Cleaned the emitter. I didn't take it apart but I used a dry soft cloth with no cleaning solution to wipe possible smudges off of the glass. I will try to be more thorough next time I'm there to try to get deeper in the cracks.
--Changed the batteries. Multiple times.
--Calibrated the Wii sensor bar again.
--Adjusted the lighting. There is a dimmer in the room so we can make it as bright or dark as we want. I have tested multiple light levels. There are no florescent lights in the bar.
I will check for scratches on the emitter. My remotes have seen far more hours than the ones in the bar but I also don't have drunks throwing them around (not usually anyway).
Thanks in advance for all of your responses. I always pick a best answer.
2 AnswersNintendo Wii1 decade agoDog Potty Training Problems?
My papillon just turned a year old and I am still having a problem with potty training. Things were going really well and once the cold weather came, he started to regress.
I realize that the only reason he doesn't let me know that he has to go and consistently goes where I want him to is my fault. I should have been more proactive especially when I work from home and set my own hours.
I live in a small apartment. My patio is cement except for a 12x3 foot area that is dirt. He was going there constantly and perhaps because of the cold weather he doesn't want to go out there as much. The cold weather and rain also means fewer trips to the dog park which could be him lashing out (I'm guessing). It's also too cold to keep the patio door open so I need to come up with something new.
I'm probably answering my own question but this is my plan: I will remove his food feeder and use a normal dog bowl. I will feed him once in the morning and once around dinner time. I'll feed him, eat breakfast and take him outside to the patio and sit there for half and hour if I have to while I play games on my iPhone. I'll do the same at dinner.
A few questions on that.
1) Can I do that with water too? I know dogs don't need a tremendous amount of water like humans do but would it be unhealthy to limit his water intake by only allowing it twice a day when I feed him? Obviously when we go for walks and to the park I will take him to water when we get home.
2) Should I walk him instead of sitting outside in the patio? I realize this would probably get quicker results but I really don't want to sit in the rain every time he poops so I am afraid of making this a habit.
3) Is there anything else that you can suggest?
Thanks in advance. I always select a best answer.
2 AnswersDogs1 decade agoMy Dog Has Allergies (probably)?
My dog is a papillon who just turned a year old. He scratches himself a lot, and even chews at his skin. Yesterday he actually bit a chunk of fir out.
I was sure that it wasn't fleas. I had never seen a flea on him and I use Advantage on him every month. A few days ago I saw 4-5 fleas on him. I put the Advantage on again (it had been a bit more than a month) and I don't think that I have seen any since. I did see a couple of black spots in his fir. I pulled them out but lost them because they were really small. My guess is that it was dirt from the dog park.
He has been scratching and chewing himself a lot the last couple of days and every time I see him do it I grab him and start picking through his fir frantically to find any sign of fleas. Also, he bites at parts of his leg that have very little fir.
On a related side note, my last pap has (ex wife got him) really bad allergies. We got him tested and nothing worked. He gets shots twice a day to increase his immunity to the things that he is allergic to and it's not working. His legs are purple from him chewing.
I really hope that this doesn't happen to my dog as I have little faith in the shot treatment. I have switched out his shampoo to a hypo allergenic and his food to a duck based organic that is designed for dogs with allergies. He's worse if anything.
Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide. I will be sure to pick a best answer.
5 AnswersDogs1 decade agoCan someone help me with California Disability and Unemployment?"?
Because I am suffering from significant depression and anxiety, my psychiatrist suggested that I take a break for my extremely successful career and go on disability.
I have a few questions:
1) I am still employed. I have no intention of going back to this company when my disability is finished. When I am ready to go back to work, it will take quite some time to find a job especially in this economy. How do I leave my job so that I can get unemployment after disability?
2) I want to be as little of a financial burden on my employer as possible. Will going on disability cost them anything if I go through the State of California rather than Blue Shield? (California pays better anyway)
3) I have read the chart indicating how much I get paid in relation to how much I make. The maximum amount says I can get $959 a week if I make $22,643.64. Is that $22K pre-tax of my best quarter in their timeline?
4) Is that $959 a week taxable? I'm sure that's a yes but does taxes come out of that check or is it an amount I will owe around tax time?
5) I have seen a lot of doctors about my condition for a long time and I am currently on 4 different medications so I know I will be approved. How long is the maximum amount of time I can be on disability for such a condition? (depression and anxiety)
Anything that you feel you can add would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and I will be sure to pick a best answer so that you get the points.
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoI'm helping someone start a business but not getting paid for it. Please help.?
This is actually in regards to a friend of mine.
She is an expert in the business of gymnastics. She knows how to start a gym, attract Olympic hopefuls, market the business, plan the courses, everything.
The problem is that she has been hired in title as an instructor but since the owners of the business don't know anything about running or starting a gym. So naturally, they want all of her knowledge for the price of an instructor instead of paying her what she deserves as someone who is essentially starting the business for them.
What I am trying to help her do is set a foundation with her new employers. I have been thinking of helping her write a business plan so that she can clearly outline what she is bringing to the table or even justifying a specific amount of money for her efforts in the form of a higher salary.
So if anyone has any advice, document templates, meeting ideas to properly ask for more money, I would greatly appreciate it. And unlike most people who ask questions here, I will indeed select a best answer.
1 AnswerSmall Business1 decade agoAppleTV alternative?
I am looking for an alternative to AppleTV. I want to be able to watch Divx movies on my TV. Computer is in another room so I would like this solution to be wireless.
I hear from reading on some products that streaming can be choppy especially on HD quality files so it seems that a good solution is to buy a unit that has a drive in it where I can store a good number of movies.
Thanks in advance.
1 AnswerTiVO & DVRs1 decade agoTivo Alternative for the PC?
I am currently a Tivo user. My box is an integrated solution provided to me by DirectTV. I can record one show while watching another or I can record two shows.
I like Tivo and DirectTV just fine but I would like to open my doors to other solutions that I might like even more. First thing to note is that I am about to purchase a very cutting edge gaming PC which will include a 1 TB drive. If there is a solid PC-based solution out there, I'd definitely have a look. And yes, I am on a wireless network in my home.
I like Tivo's integration into DirectTV. I like how it handles season passes as I record a lot of TV series. I don't like having to manage the space on my Tivo and I'd like the ability to do the following:
1) Record 3-4 shows at the same time and still watch another.
2) Burn my saved recordings.
3) Eliminate commercials.
4) Control this from my PC or from a remote at my TV (different room from my PC)
Thanks in advance.
