  • The Fault in Our Stars bookplate? I just got it and...?

I have no idea where to stick it. Lol. Should I put it on the inside cover? The first blank page of the book? Where? I know this may seem like a stupid question, but... Lol.

    Thanks.

  • Why did Harvard ask me to send four ACT scores to them?

Earlier last month, Harvard asked for four ACT scores (February, September, October, and December ACT). I sent it to them, of course (I received help from my TRIO counselor because I was going through a rough financial situation). Do you think the reason why Harvard asked for these ACT scores was to replace my SAT subject scores? (Again, financial situation; I couldn't take the SAT subject tests).

    Thanks.

  • Can I ask college interviewers to come to me instead of me going to them?

What I mean is for them to drive to where I live instead of me driving to them?

I'm getting interviewed by Columbia University and Yale University alumni. Columbia wants me to go to Huntsville and Yale wants me to go to Birmingham (from where I live to Huntsville and from where I live to Birmingham is a total of 103 miles; I live in the halfway point between those cities). Because of my family's financial situation, we don't have money for gas; my mother still has to pay some unpaid bills. We're struggling right now. And it seemed like they want to do this interview as soon as possible.

Do you think I can ask them to come see me instead? Like at my school, or something?

    Thank you.

  • My Common App Counselor Form is LATE?!?!?!?!?! D;?

Most of the schools to which I applied had their application deadlines on the 1st. I had a little trouble with my guidance counselor... Long story short: He doesn't do his job. The teachers whom I asked to fill out the teacher forms are PISSED at my guidance counselor. Now, my principal is having to fill out the forms and he's mad at my guidance counselor, too. I had my application, teacher recommendations, and supplements submitted on time. It's been almost two weeks, and the counselor forms aren't submitted.

Will the colleges to which I applied deny me because my counselor forms are late?

  • Harvard Additional Essay Question?

On the Harvard Supplement, it says:

"We do not expect or require applicants to submit supplementary materials or additional essays. We simply want to be certain that you have every opportunity to tell us about yourself."

    And:

"Occasionally, students feel that college application forms do not provide sufficient opportunity to convey important information about themselves or their accomplishments. If there is something you would like us to know, please inform us below. If you wish to include an additional essay, you may do so."

I have read that it and heard that a lot of Harvard students advised you not to write an additional essay, but I feel like I should. On the Common App, I answered that Illocano was my first language (JUST my first language) and that I'm able to speak, read, and write in English, which easily indicates that I have forgotten my language. Should I go ahead and explain how and why I have forgotten my native tongue?

    Thanks.

  • Common Application Family Section Question?

I'm filling out the common application and I'm currently on the family section. It says:

"Please list both parents below, even if one or more is deceased or no longer has legal responsibilities toward you. Many colleges collect this information for demographic purposes even if you are an adult or an emancipated minor. If you are a minor with a legal guardian (an individual or government entity), then please list that information below as well. If you wish, you may list step-parents and/or other adults with whom you reside, or who otherwise care for you, in the Additional Information section."

You see, my father was never in my life, but I know he's still alive, I know his name, and I know where he was born. That's it. I don't know where he lives or what he does. Would it be okay if I just put his name down and leave the rest blank?

Also, my mother's current marital status is "widowed," and I'm putting my late step-dad in the additional information section, since I consider him my father. How do I go about doing this? Will I have to do it on a Word document? Will I have to explain, or do it like this:

    Mother's marital status: Widowed

    Parent 2

    Type: Step-parent

    Deceased: dd/mm/yyyy

    Name: Mr. (Name)

    Does that make sense?

    Thanks! :)

  • Will I get into a good college? Good as in "Ivy League"?

I just got my SAT score back, and I'm a little bit disappointed. According to some, my score is average, but still. I thought I'd do better on this. But it was first time, and I don't have any more chances to take it. On my ACT, my highest was a 23. -_-' (I'm still waiting to get my December ACT score back; that 23 is from the October ACT.)

Anyway, I'm filling out the Common Application online, and I just recently finished writing the essay (I chose the topic of my own). I let two English teachers, the one I had last year and the one I have this year, read my paper. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but they praised and loved it. I'm hoping that this essay will help me get into an Ivy, especially Cornell. Or *ahem* Harvard.

    Yeah, I aim high.

But I think I do have things that will make me stand out:

-NASA Innovative Systems Project for the Increased Recruitment of Engineering and Science Students Program

Details: My team in my physics class created a payload that will look for cryo-volcanoes on the surface of Titan, one of Saturn's moon. I was the technical writer and chief engineer.

    -Unsheltered International

Details: It's a ministry that I'm involved in. We feed the homeless, and for those who need them, we provide birth certificates and help them create a resume when they look for jobs. My main jobs in the ministry is to serve food and help them look for their missing loved ones via internet access on my laptop. I really love the ministry! :D

    And then the usuals:

    -Scholars Bowl (9th-12th)

    -Science Team (9th-12th)

    -Writing Club (10th-12th)

    -Poetry Out Loud (10th-12th)

    -FCCLA (12th)

    -Yearbook Club (12th)

(I only listed the clubs that I'm in this year.)

I've taken AP classes from 9th to 10th grade. Honors classes at my school weren't available at my school until last year, so I've been taking honors classes since then. I have a 3.57 GPA (this will go higher, since I'm taking calculus on my final year; for most people, precalculus is their final math class) and I'm in the top 10 percentile*.

*Note: I go to a very small school. I don't mean to sound like I'm whining, but I would probably be in the top 5 if it weren't for the fact that cheating is pretty much tolerated at my school.

Look, I work my hardest in school, and yes, I have certain limitations. I would further my aspirations, do something more, but I live in a rural community and I go to a poor school where some teachers don't even care about their students. I STRIVE for education, and it saddens me that some of these teachers at school don't care. Not even my guidance counselor... And thank GOD that I've always been taught by hard working teachers--teachers who won't tolerate cheating and my jerky guidance counselor. By the way, my essay was pretty much me talking about my aspirations, and my English teacher liked that it was metaphorical. :)

So what do you think? Do you think I have a chance of getting into Ivies? PLEASE be honest with me. Thank you.

  • SAT tips, please? :D?

I'm taking the SAT for the first this December. I'm currently studying (I haven't done anything but study all day today) and it looks SO much harder than the ACT. I mean, I guess the only thing hard about it are the fill-in-the-blank ones, where you have to choose which word fits best in the blank. On the plus side I am learning new words and their meanings and I find myself using some of those words. Lol.

I was wondering if anyone could give me ANY tips?

    Thanks. :D

By the way, I used a fee waiver for the SAT. Will I have to show it when I go and take the SAT?

  • Harvard SAT II Subject Test?

I recently applied for the December SAT; this will be my first time taking it. (I go to a school where students are encouraged to take the ACT. My teachers and counselor rarely talk about the SAT.)

Anyway, the reason why I'm taking the SAT is because I did poorly on my ACT (it's an average score, but still), and I think I'll do better on the SAT. (I made a 1950 on a practice SAT, but I'm studying hard to make that into a 2050 on the real test. I don't know why I did better on this SAT practice test, considering I have an average ACT score.)

I'm currently looking at colleges, mainly Ivies (of course, I'm looking at other colleges, too), and on the Harvard website it says that the SAT II subject tests are required. Since I already signed up for the regular SAT, will it be okay if I take the SAT II subject tests later (the application deadline is January 1st)? Because on the application it asked for "pasts and future SAT tests dates."

    Thanks.

  • I don't think I'll be a good tutor, but I have to help...?

I'm a high school senior and I will be tutoring a freshman student starting tomorrow.

    Here's a back story:

The special education teacher at my school was looking for a senior who was willing to be an algebra tutor for this freshman--he's been falling behind. The freshman hasn't been coming to school lately--he only came to school once this year, and school started in early August--due to medical problems, and he's been home schooled but still enrolled in the school as a student. (His doctor thinks he has chronic gastroenteritis, but the doctor isn't sure yet.) Anyway, my previous math teachers recommended me to the special education teacher, so she and I talked about it and she told me about this situation. I agreed to being a tutor, about which she was ecstatic because she didn't know who else to ask. Then all of a sudden, she told me I wasn't doing it for free. It was then that I realized how desperate the parents must be.

Here's the thing: I have never in my life tutored anyone. I just help them. (I guess that's basically the same thing, but I hope you get what I mean.) I don't want him to feel inferior toward me because I'm a senior and he's a freshman. NOT AT ALL. I'm able to explain things, but I fear that I won't do a good job. I guess it's because I'm actually getting PAID $20 an hour. I told the special educations teacher that I would do it for free, but she said I HAVE to get paid. And like I said, the parents are desperate. I don't want to do it for the money, I want to do it because I WANT him to pass algebra. Money was NEVER in my mind after I agreed.

So please, any tips on being a good tutor?

  • College application question concerning my citizenship?

    Hi.

I'm currently filling out a college application, and it asked whether I'm a citizen or an international student. I moved here from the Philippines when I was five and had been living in the U.S. ever since as a permanent resident (I have a green card). I have not yet become a citizen.

Which one should I fill in? A citizen or an international student?

    Thanks.

  • How do you put this in set-builder notation?

The graph's domain and range in interval notation is

    D: (-∞, +∞)

    R: (-∞, +∞)

    Would it be

    D: {x | -∞ < x < +∞}

    R: {y | -∞ < y < +∞}

    in set-builder notation?

    Am I right?

    Thanks!

  • My friend is obsessed with...?

Logan Lerman. She has tons of pictures of him hung up on her bedroom walls and her closet walls. And she's obsessed with walls, too. Just now, she just posted a picture of Logan Lerman on my Facebook wall. And she keeps talking about how Logan Lerman loves the movie Boogie Nights. This obsession is freaking me out.

How do I help her get rid of this obsession?

  • I had a cough drop before my MRI...?

This morning I had an MRI on my liver, and I was told not to eat or drink anything after midnight. Anyway, I woke up around 4 this morning coughing my head off (I've been sick since the day before) so I had a cough drop, and I completely forgot about my MRI. I was wondering if this would have affected my MRI?

  • When should I start applying for scholarships?

I just finished my junior year of high school, and I'm on my summer break right now. When should I apply? And when should I apply for the FAFSA?

I also heard about fastweb.com and scholarship.com. Are these websites safe?

Just to let you all know, I'm SO stressed out about college! I keep worrying about the recent ACT test I took (I made a 21 on my last one, and I don't think I did well on this one) but I do have good grades, and my guidance counselor isn't doing his job at all! He's no help! Please, please, help me.

    Thank you! :D

  • How to raise my ACT score?

I recently received my December ACT score online.

    English: 20

    Mathematics: 22

    Reading: 16

    Science: 16

    Writing: 20

    Composite: 19

I know, these scores suck. I didn't have ANY time to study for it, but I was so confident that I made at least a 25. This was my second time taking the ACT this year. The first one I took was the June test of this year and I got the same score.

I don't think I need help on English and Math; Reading and Science are the ones that need to be raise to a higher score. I'm an avid reader, I like reading, but the time set for that is not much. I need more time for it. Science on the other hand--I hate it. I have never liked science. The community college downtown offers an ACT study session a week before the ACT. I never get a chance to go.

I'm only a Junior this year, and I'm really stressed out about college. I don't have any money to get myself into college, and the pressure of going to one is tremendous because my mom, who didn't get much of an education when she lived in the Philippines because of money issues, wants me to go. I really need to get into a great college (I'd like to go to Vanderbilt University or Birmingham Southern College). My teachers keep saying that people with a different ethnic background will more likely be accepted to a college, but I don't think that's enough. I need scholarships.

So how can I raise my ACT scores, especially the reading and science?

    Thank you.

  • I need writing advice...?

I've been working on this novel since the middle of summer break. With school in the way of my writing, I haven't been able to write that much. Now that it's Christmas break, and that my novel is almost finish, I have lots of time to finish this novel.

    But I can't.

When I first started writing this novel, I wrote 6,000 words a day because I was SO into it. Now that I'm nearing the end of the novel, I just can't write anymore. And if I stop where I am, it wouldn't make sense. I know how to end it--it's just that I can't put it down on words. It's always like this with my novels: I can't get to the end. I don't know if it's Writer's Block or not, but I need some advice.

    Please help. Thank you.
