  • A weird question about country borders (2nd time asking)?

This is HYPOTHETICAL. I'm NOT suggesting that this really happens in reality, nor that it it should.

How would different countries be affected (e.g. economically, socially, politically, etc.) if they 'lent' each other territory (and borrowed as well) for the purpose of controlling/maintaining large-scale events TEMPORARILY (e.g., containing a localized tribal war, or mining projects), etc.?

E.g., hypothetically, a HUGE mineral deposit is found by Mongolian officials on the border between Mongolia and China. China is far-better suited to mine the deposit quickly and effectively, so the two countries make a deal: the chunk of mineral-rich land on the Mongolian side is taken away and is added to China's territory until the deposit is exhausted (i.e., Mongolia becomes smaller, China becomes bigger: borders are redrawn). Afterwards, 30% of the mined resource goes to Mongolia, while the other 70% goes to China, and the territory is returned to Mongolia. However, there are several large towns that exist on the 'lent' territory and a large population of Mongolians who reject to the idea, and for the time that China controls the mineral-rich land, those people are classified as 'Chinese'.

Its a really weird concept, but I just wanted to hear about everyone's thoughts on it and what you think the results could be if it was commonly practiced. How would it affect the world?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Weight/velocity questions? Probably simple?

    PLEASE show working out :)

    1. A body of mass 4kg at rest is acted upon by a force equal to half its weight. Determine:

    i) It's velocity after 3 seconds

ii) It's displacement after 3 seconds

    2. A body is suspended on a spring balance and shows a weight of 20 Newtons. This same balance and body on the surface of the moon would show 3.2 Newtons. What is the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon?

    3. An athlete, commencing at a point due east, completes half a lap of a 440 meter track in 25 seconds. Determine the athletes:

    i) average velocity in westerly direction)

ii) average velocity if the athlete completes one full lap at the same pace.

    4. A car travels with an average speed of 20ms^-1 due north for 3km, then due west for another 4km. Calculate the average velocity of the car.

    5. A person walks for 10 seconds at 1ms^-1, then for another 10 seconds in the same direction at 2ms-1. Find the total displacement AND the average velocity.

    6. A body travels for 200m at a uniform velocity of 4ms^-1, and a further 150m in the same direction at a uniform velocity of 7.5ms^-1. Determine the total time taken AND the average velocity for the whole journey.

    7. A cyclist travels at 6ms^-1 south for 10 minutes, and then returns 600m along the same path. What is the final displacement of the cyclist?

Thank you SOO much!! :D I know some of these questions may seem REALLY easy..

  • Pretty basic physics questions?

(My answers are in brackets next to the questions, but I really need to know if they are correct.)

    a) Consider the forces acting upon a body of mass 40kg resting on a frictionless surface [diagram below]:

    15 Newtons, WEST <----- [OBJECT] -----> 35 Newtons, EAST

Calculate the net force acting upon the body. (Is it 20 N, east?)

    b) Calculate the acceleration of the body. (Using "a = F/m", so "a = 20/40", is the acceleration 0.5ms^-2?)

    c) To come to a complete stop, a drag car negatively accelerates. Identify another term for 'negative acceleration'. (Is it "retardation", or "deceleration"?)

    d) Identify the force that brings the drag car to a stop. (Is it friction, and air resistance?)

    e) A balloon rocket is built by a physicist to investigate motion. The balloon is mounted upon a horizontal string using a length of drinking straw and masking tape.

i} Where along the string will the balloon be moving at the greatest speed? (When at the initial starting point, or just after the initial starting point on the string?)

ii} Use Newton's Third Law of Motion to explain why the balloon is propelled forwards along the string. (Newton's Third Law dictates that an equal and opposite force must be produced when a force is applied. The balloon's thrust acts as as the opposing force against the friction/inertia that holds the balloon in place. ?)

    f) A person starts pushing against a wall.

i} What is the net force acting upon the person when he pushes against the wall? (There is 0 Net force; the force exerted by him and by the wall cancel each others out due to Newton's Third Law of Motion?)

ii} If the man pushes with a force of 200 N on the wall, what is the force that the wall exerts back onto him? (200 Newtons: because and equal and opposite reaction must be produced in order to satisfy Newton's Third Law?)

iii} The person is pushing back onto the floor with his feet with a force of 200 Newtons. With what force does the floor push back onto the person? (Again, 200 Newtons, for the same reason?)

    g) A 500Kg box is placed on the tray of a truck but is not tied down by ropes. If the car suddenly brakes, use the concept of inertia to explain the danger to the driver.

    h) find the net (unbalanced) force and describe the resultant motion of the body (north is up the page):

    15 Newtons

    ^

    I

    2 Newtons <--- [OBJECT] ---> 7 Newtons

    l

    \/

    10 Newtons

[the 15 Newtons north and the 10 Newtons down both directly come from the middle of the object]

(Is the net force 5 Newtons, north-east?, so the object will move in a north-easterly direction?)

    g) Suggest FOUR ways in which an aeroplane could lift more easily?

    h) How could an aeroplane wing be used as the sail for a sailing boat? Explain this.

Sorry it was so long, but I really need to get these questions right. Thank so SO much in advance! :D

  • Questions relating to the unification of gravity and electricity?

Would the answers to any of the questions below be relevant towards an eventual, hypothetical theory that would unite the force of electricity and gravity in physics ("electrogravity")? Do the questions even make sense? If not, could you please tell me why not? If they do, could you please answer them as best as you can? (They may seem like really stupid questions to someone experienced in the field of physics...)

    1. If the hypothetical force-carrier partile of gravity (the "graviton") is expected to be massless, then why is gravity a mass-dependent force?

    2. Does the size, strength, and/or influence of the magnetic field (of, say, the Earth) affect the strength and/or influence (of, say, the Earth's) gravitational pull? Or do both these properties rely on the the physical SIZE of the celestial body?

    3. Is the force of gravity related directly or almost directly in any way to the electromagnetic spectrum?

    4. IF we were to closely compare the properties of electricity and gravity, is it scientifically acceptable to state that gravity (in a sense) is a "bland" or "straight" version of electricity? (seeing that electricity is dependent on charge, while gravity in dependent on mass...the electrical field has force lines that are curved, but the gravitational field has force lines that are straight...the electrical field is bipolar, while the gravitational field is not...and there exists a negative force acting upon electricity, but no negative force acts upon gravity)?

    5. That being said, are mass and electricity related in ANY way (pertaining to physics)?

    6. Anything else I should know or consider?

Thanks for reading, I realise that some of those questions may seem ridiculous or uneducated. :)

  • URGENT Korean translator needed in next few hours!!?

I've been hosting a South Korean exchange student for the past two weeks. We have made really good friends with each other, but sadly he is leaving tomorrow and I wanted to give him a really nice goodbye letter to remember me and my country Australia by (as we may never see each other again). My Korean is extremely bad, however, and I need somebody to translate the letter for me:

    Dear (his name),

Hello, (his name-)! I hope you enjoyed your time in Australia with us! We did so many things together, but like everything, all good things must come to an end. While you must return home to South Korea, we will miss you very much and never forget you :)

(Name of my school here) will become very empty with you and the other (name of their school) students here, but I hope that when you return home you remember us all and remember your visit to Australia. Even though Perth and Seoul are 7100 kilometers apart from each other, our friendship will always be so much closer :)

This photo album is a gift from me to you and your family, and contains some of the photos we took, as well as some memorabilia from Australia to remember us by.

I wish you a safe flight home, and a prosperous future. May our paths cross again someday :)

    From,

    -my name here-

Pleeeeeeease don't use any online translators, I realy don't want to end up saying something offensive or gramatically incorect to him.

    Thanks in advance!!

  • Help with German phrase forms please?

    Hi

Does anybody know the difference between the phases for "nice to meet you":

    1. Es freut mich

    2. Es freut mich, sie Kennenzulernen

    3. Freut mich

    4. Es freut mich, du Kennenzulernen

    and "excuse me/sorry":

    1. Entschuldigung

    2. Es tut mir leid

    3. Entschuldigung sie

All the words in each catagory are all different by they all mean the same thing im guessing, but what do they mean literally and when should i use them? Are some forms polite/inpolite? And which ones?

  • Meaning of Humpty Dumpty (in Transformers 3)?

Earlier today I watched Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon, and there was a scene when an Asian office worker was thrown out the window of a building by a Decepticon, which of course killed him. Everyone else gets all hyped up and panic-y, then the boss comes in and says "OK, a worker died, but looking at him out the window isn't gonna bring him back. You all read Humpty Dumpty."

From this, I was wondering: does the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty secretly make a reference to death? Does the line, "..Couldn't put Humpty together again!" mean that dead people don't come back to life?

Im probably wrong, but its interesting anyway (i think). :D

  • Finnish vs Estonian Languages?

    Hi :)

    A few questions:

    1. What are the main differences between Finnish and Estonian? (someone told me that the two were very close, I don't know if this is true.)

    2. What would the most beneficial language to learn, out of those two?

    3. Are they generally difficult for a native English speaker to learn? (a lot of people say yes, but again I don't know)

    4. Approximately how long does it take to speak these languages decently?

    5. Are they (or is one of them) worth learning at all?

Tips from native speakers would be great :D

    Thanks in advaaaaance !!

  • Learning Swedish (proper answers please!)?

(I'm asking this question for a third time. Please try and answer as much as you can :D)

Swedish is one of my favorite languages, even though I'm learning it out of pure interest. Can anyone tell me: is it hard/easy to learn? Any challenging aspects e.g cases, unfamiliar grammar I should know about? How long to become decent at speaking it?

Also: i'm fourteen and languages are my absolute favorite subject, I dedicate about 50% of my studying to it. Along with Swedish i teach myself German Russian and Estonian with no problems (except annoying revision!). Also...I have aspergers syndrome, so I learn languages relatively quick.

Tips from native speakers would be great

    Tack!

  • Learning 4+ languages?

I am very keen to learn as many languages as I can in the next few years (favorite subject lol). Is it possible to learn decent German, russian, Swedish, Estonian, and maybe Azeri in about 10 years? Or am i just emphasizing? I have aspergers syndrome so I pick up languages very quickly.

I have a strong German background, so I already know a lot of basics. Russian Swedish Estonian and Azeri are just out of pure interest.

Tips from native speakers would be appreciated

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Learning Korean in 5 months?

I'm going on a student exchange trip to Korea in around five months (in October 2011), and I thought that learning a little Korean would help. But how much can I learn in five months (I mean words and phases), using Internet guides? Also, would it be possible to master the writing in this time period? I started today, and it seems simple enough, but...

It is currently 5:03pm here in Perth, Australia. It is way past 6:00pm in Oceana and there were no reports of anything supernatural from every country in the region. May 21st 2011 has proved to be fake and tbh Harold Camping is as crazy as bin Laden.

I'm trying to get better at drawing manga, but everytime I draw it, it looks so bad that I feel discouraged and almost give up altogether. I know the only way to get better is to practice, but I can't draw with this constant feeling! Any suggestions or ways I could teach myself to draw?

Also, if I draw for around half an hour to a little over an hour every day, how long approximately will it take me to become reasonably good?

    Thanks! :)
