I am a ASE certified master auto technician, and have owned my own service center for about 3 yrs. I also host a call-in radio talk show every other saturday morning on the local station. I answer car questions and cover topics of consumer interest, such as buying a used automobile. (www.kotefm.com, for online listening). I really enjoy helping people solve problems. I think that people need to know enough about their cars to be able to communicate with their mechanic. I really don't think that everybody should work on their own car, tho. Best of luck to you!
1989 Chevy PU?
I built a new engine for my 89 chev. pu. It is a 350, basically stock, but I installed a mild cam for low end torque. It is TBI, not carb. Now my intake vacuum is low enough at idle that it is screwing with the MAP sensor and won't idle good at all. It runs great down the road. This is not for high performance, it is a work truck. Is there a reprogrammed PROM available to compensate for low vacuum at idle, or will I have to add a degree or 2 of advance to the cam to raise cylinder pressure?
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoWhy are people always bagging on mechanics?
I am a ASE certified master auto tech, and a shop owner. I have a huge investment in tools and equipment. Probably more than most of you spent on your house. Yet you want me to fix YOUR problem in YOUR car for virtually FREE!! WHY? You don't go to McDonald's and start complaining about the price of a Big Mac; don't do that to your service shop. If you aren't willing to pay the price of owning and operating a car, take the bus!
