  • Why did Stalin prevent civilians from evacuating Stalingrad during the Nazi invasion?

I've read that at some point during the conflict Stalin gave orders to Soviet troops to prevent civilians from evacuating Stalingrad. What could have possibly been the purpose? Aside from it being unimaginably cruel, civilians must have made military operations more difficult.

Also, after the conflict what did the Soviets do with so many dead? Are there military cemeteries? I shudder to think . . .

  • Travel itinerary suggestions for our trip to Detroit?

We are planning to visit Utica, MI for a wedding in mid-August for a long weekend (probably Thursday-Tuesday).

The wedding is Saturday evening. What should we do in the meantime? I would love itinerary suggestions!

We are from the Washington, DC area and are pretty clueless about the Detroit area but hear there are some lovely/interesting places.

We will have a rental car.

  • What do doctors do when a patient's heart stops beating on the operating table?

My 75 year old father was scheduled for a hip replacement surgery today when they rolled him on his side to begin his heart stopped beating for 8 minutes. Will he suffer major brain damage or do you think they managed to do something to keep the blood flowing? Please be honest with me. I want to know the best case and worst case.

He is still unconscious and not responding to voices but moving his legs a little and his arms a little.

He's very overweight. He's diabetic and has high blood pressure. He's not in great shape to begin with.

  • Why do Democrat leaders avoid paying taxes?

The latest: Claire McCaskill owes nearly $300,000 in taxes related to a private plane. Then there's Charlie Rangel, Tim Geithner, Tom Daschle, Al Franken, Nancy Killefer, Caroline Kennedy, Hilda Solis, etc.

This party wants us to pay more taxes yet they aren't very interested in paying them themselves.

  • How do I deal with a friend who has bad boundaries?

She "friends" my friends on facebook even though she hardly knows them, tries to invite herself to social events when she's not invited. I've known her a long time but since the advent of facebook it's starting to get really bad and I'm creeped out. I've distanced myself from her: don't return her emails, vm messages, etc., but that doesn't stop her. I just found out she's wiggled her way into a very special get together by inviting herself. Very annoying. Yikes, I want her to get away from me and my life. What should I do/say?
