Divergent

Lina stared at the man across from her with disgust.

"Lina, I haven't seen you in God knows how long," The man said tiredly, looking at Lina with bloodshot eyes. "Wonder who's fault that is," the eighteen year old girl muttered. "Look, I know I wasn't the best father, but I tried," the man said, getting more defensive. Lina's hands curled into fists. "You hit our mom," she replied coldly. "She didn't care about you!" The man shot back. "She was there for us longer than you were! Do you know how terrifying it is to see your mother laying unconscious, not knowing if she was going to get up?!" Lina was getting angrier, and her body began to shake. The man ran a hand through his dirty blonde hair. "She always took drugs and never listened to me, she was like a god damn child! So I had to swat her every now and then to get her to listen, but I never touched you," he sounded almost like he was pleading now, trying to get her to listen to his reasons. She was having none of it, and got up, ready to storm away. Before she left, she turned around to say one last thing. "Nicole doesn't talk. Hasn't talked since she was 6, just thought you should know," in tears, the young woman left the restaurant.

(The father beat their mother, and the kids got taken away. Nicole was only 5, and went mute as a result of everything that happened.)
