  • Do you think its possible to tame more than one birds at the same time?

I no longer have all the time in the world to tame one bird at a time...

So lets say I get 2 - 3 juvenile birds (canaries are my choice) at one month or a little bit older, put them in a spacious flight cage (those rectangular cages).

I know they're very hungry at that age. So every morning I will patiently stick my hand in with food. Hoping they would bond with me and learn I am not a threat.

I've tamed a young canary before and she's become such a dear, so I know how to do it.

I'm just wondering what it'd be like if there's multiple birds being tamed together...

I was never expecting them to be as tame as budgies, knowing they have different level of intelligence anyways. I only want the birds to not be afraid of me, becomes fond of my presence, and can come to my hand for feeding.

  • Are deers pushover?

I often watch discovery, natgeo, or animal planet...

And I always wonder how do delicate looking creatures such as deers - who are often the prey item for many predators including humans - manage to keep their population steady or up?

I read that deers only produce one or two fawns, and that they are picky eaters, mostly eating sprouts and such. Not to mention after that they have to be aware of predators like wolves, and the winter - where food is less... Also, using brute strength is very unlikely, knowing they have thin bodies

So please enlighten me, help me feel deers aren't pushovers...

    thanks~

  • Any out of the box marketing idea?

Basically I want to know what people did to expand their business.

Especially when its an online store, or distribution business that only "passes items" instead of having to rent or own a storage of goods.

We've already thought of using facebook, instagram, and local online trading websites to promote ourselves. What else can be done?

    Thank you in advance

  • Tank mate for rainbow fish?

I adore boesemani and turquoise rainbows. I want to keep some in my planted tank.

Don't worry, its huge, 150cm long and has lots of plants.

My tap water has PH 7,5 and temperature 27 - 28C.

Knowing these fish are alkaline lovers, I am considering their tank mates.

I'd love to see some elegant schoolers like neons, but they are are from the acidic amazon so I am quite worried. Otocinclus are amazonian too aren't they?

So what tank mate should I put with them?

Or should I just neutralize the water to 7...?

Ph test kits are pricy here so I'd rather do as few tests as possible and save money...

    Thank you

P.S. how do you make red rainbows turn to bright red? the ones I see in pet stores are still silvery

  • Why do some fish have tall flat bodies?

for instance: discus, and angelfish (both fresh and salt water).

compared to other fish that shared their habitat, with long slim body and can swim fast...

they have flat, tall bodies. face it, they're not fast swimmers, rather, very mellow...

I wonder why nature created them like that, does that body have any function?

i know they can "breast feed" their babies with that body, but in terms of survival against predator how does that body help them?

    thx

  • how do you cool down you aquarium?

see, my aquarium is semi indoor with poor air circulation, that is the only place available to place my tank. the usualy temperature is 29 - 30 C.

what I did so far is added a standing fan to blow gentle breeze to its surface, which worked wonders by reducing temp to 27 - 27,5 C. I also add a cover for the glass for hot days.

I am open to other ideas! I'm thinking to stack terracota pots neatly for the filter chamber so water is forced to flow into these little cool pockets... what do you think?

I would like to avoid chillers as much as possible, very expensive.

also, with that temperature, do you think otocinclus want to breed? I will have the tank densely planted with lots of covers, plus plenty of food to stimulate them. the aquarium is huge seriously, like 400L and planted.

    thanks

    3 AnswersFish7 years ago
  • Is aquarium chiller worth it?

Right now my 400L tank is really warm, about 30 degrees celcius.

That's a no no for its future inhabitants (shrimps and plants)

So I'm currently figuring out ways to cool it down naturally.

The problem is that the circulation is bad, the location is considered indoors so its pretty humid.

So I'm gonna cover the glass and run a wall lamp that blows air along the surface (not directly)

Also have plenty of pot plants to create cool spots...

But, in case it doesn't work... I;ll have to resort to buying chiller!

So, are they worth it? Any hazard I should know? Do they use so much energy and stuff??

I heard they could burn... Which is scary...

  • What fish am I looking for here?

To inhabit my large planted aquarium of 150cm x 50cm x 55cm (dunno how many gallons though)

    Needs to be:

    - small

    - friendly / peaceful

    - hardy; easy to care

    - colorful, if possible shines spectacularly under lights

    - if possible, omnivorous or has a high tendency towards herbivorism, so can be left to feed on algae

    - and will not harass my cherry shrimps

Right now neon tetra is on my mind, so gorgeous under light, plus a lot of people say they don't kill shrimps (unless they happen to find careless babies... i don't mind that though), but can they be left to eat algae maybe?

what about guppies? though not as elegant as neons...

    glofish? anything?

    thank u

  • How did goldfish keepers protect their plants?

I know many have said not to put goldfish in planted aquarium...

But I keep seeing people have lush planted tank with around 8 or more goldfish, all is doing well!

    How'd they do that???

My kois (still cousin of goldfish) keep on eating the plants I put in the pond...

But then I do like to feed my fish vegetables... does that have to do with this?

    thanks

  • Growing vegetables without direct sunlight, is it possible?

I like vegetable gardening, especially the likes of spinach; pak choy; convolvulus; basil; etc.

Can I still grow them even if for 8 months of the year my garden did not receive direct sunlight?

It will still be bright from the reflection and warm... The other 4 months my garden receives warm sunlight and rain :)

Because I read from a book that leafy vegetables like the ones I mention can still be grown with just that... So you suppose its possible, right?

Is there any side effect like the veggie looks weird or something?

    Thank you.

  • How to tell if plants photosynthesize?

I want to test if the plants I put under grow light photosynthesize.

My grow light lamp is a fixture for 2 fluorescent tubes, one is 6200K (cool daylight) and 9000K (super daylight), both are 36W (energy saver), and distance of lamp to the top of foliage is about 30 - 40cm.

Will fast growing plants like bamboos grow well under it? Thanks.

    3 AnswersGarden & Landscape8 years ago
  • Can you grow bamboos or bouganvillea with grow light?

    I have 2 fluorescent lamps, 40W, 6500K.

Will place both in its special fitting complete with reflectors.

Can I grow bamboos or bouganville with this lamp?

Will the latter be able to bloom with that lamp too?

    Thanks

  • My kois are skittish, how do I correct this behavior?

I've kept them for months, they're all happy, healthy, and has grown well.

When its feeding time, they become cute and sweet underwater puppies, even letting me give them gentle petting (without scraping their body mucus of course lol).

But sometimes, for no reason something spooked one fish, I swear I did nothing!

It splashed water in the process, hide, and the whole group follows...

My brother's kois are even worse, they keep hiding, so as if the pond is only inhabited by goldfish. Only coming out to feed but only after we left the pond...

Those aren't good behavior for such friendly fish right?

I love my kois, I want them to chill and so I don't have to worry they freak out even when guests are visiting... What am I to do with them?

    Thanks

  • How to breed goldfish?

    Simple and straightforward question!

How to breed goldfish: both fancy round bodied type; and the natural looking commons, comets, and shubunkins... What are the requirements? And I once heard you have to put the couple in a shallow tank/ pond and gradually add water everyday to simulate rain... Is that true?

    Thank you :)

  • Can we have friendly finches if we spend a lot of time in the aviary?

Let's say I'll make an aviary large enough to have a table and some seats.

I'll make it as comfortable enough so that I can spend a great deal of time in there, and everyday I feed the birds (young finches as my choice) their food on top of the table.

They'll have to come near me as I sat beside their food minding my own business (reading, browsing, etc) and of course moving very slowly and gently.

I'm not asking for them to come when called, do tricks, or anything like that...

But at least they won't be freaked out when I enter, greet me everyday, and play near me. Will that happen? Thank you...

  • Starting aquaponics, what media to use?

aquarium is 28 liter, one of those beginner aquariums commonly sold. like this http://img.weiku.com/waterpicture/2011/10/27/1/Sma...

on top of it is a box filter, which i want to use for planting vegetables. http://petlovingworld.com/uploaded_files/products/...

will filter wool work for the planting medium? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iWx6okUT9kw/SkRvhCJXSNI/...

if not, i do have some aquarium gravels... http://www.getprice.com.au/images/uploadimg/2638/b...

can i spread the seeds onto the media or do i have to sprout them first?

thank you. i hope i'm clear enough

  • what's a good way to keep pond plants from getting uprooted by fish?

the plants I'm talking about are bunch or clumping plants like hornworts and cabomba...

I already wrapped their base stem with filter wool and fit them in a small pot. but apparently my kois are strong and persistent enough to pick the whole plant up (accidentally or on purpose) with the wool still wrapping.

should I perhaps use a bit more bigger pot and plant them in gravels?

    ideas? thank you

  • So, Feeder Goldfish... How do you ensure their survival rate?

Those cute but helpless little fish...

Sometimes I just wanna adopt some and save them

But most will still die, face it, they're weak...

Any tips or ideas to increase their survival?

    So far, I got:

    - decent sized tank, but not too deep so fish can swim easily

    - sponge filter using air pump, prevent fish from getting sucked

    - some clumping plants like hornwort or elodea

    - gave them some drops of vitamins and fish salt

    - and their food is usually crushed into tiny soft pieces for ease of picking

  • Is it possible to mount orchids on vertical pvc pipes?

I want to decorate my pond with orchids, but since the space are limited, I have to search for various materials. And I began considering pvc pipes, the white ones especially because they look fresh and clear.

I'll be creating some sort of standee inspired from this:

    http://www.perchfactory.com/images/gallery-pics/sh...

The orchids will be mounted on the vertical pipes, the horizontals are optional but if I do use them, probably for watering system. And the bottom part will be for it to stand on the sides of my pond, as sweet decors...

The orchids I use are mostly dendrobiums, but I might consider some phals and vandas (the ones that don't require substrate yes?), and use sphagnum moss as media.

What do you think? Will it work?

    Thank you in advance

  • How do you clean fine sand in an aquarium / pond?

For my baby koi pond I used fine sansibar sand (JBL sansibar white)...

I know its not common, but I saw a video on youtube where a whole koi pond uses this, and its very clean!

So lets say I want to keep the quality of the sands clean, what would be the best way to do that?

I have a siphon, but I want to make sure I only take out the dirts, not the sand.
