I'm unable to disentangle my thoughts to write a report-despite using a plan, mind maps etc my head is totally disorganised. This is causing me great distress as I have a deadline to meet. Also, I cannot do anything else because I know that I have left work incomplete. Suggestions from those with similar experience would be very helpful. Thanks.

  • Help!- Massive electric bills -yet minimum appliances in use?

Recently I changed electric supplier- from Scottish Power to Bulb owing to extortionate bills. If anything, however, the bills are even higher. The property is detached-hence only my meter information is being forwarded- and my bill shows the correct meter number. New energy-efficient thermostat-controllable electric heaters have also been installed. Three have been completely switched off and the other two are on the economy setting of 18 degrees C. I am self-isolating at present so no engineer can call. Are there any other reasons why my electric bills could be so high? I’d be grateful for suggestions.

  • Why is recent electric bill so huge?

My recent electric bill was £ 1000+ for early March to end June-more than double the amount for same time last year and during warm weather. I have overnight electric storage heaters and have not had the input/output turned up, nor have I used more heating appliances. Scottish Power is installing a check meter next week, but own calculations over past week suggest there is no problem here. Daily overnight consumption-for first night of week 24 kw, followed by 3kw nightly. This is 33 times lower than the average 110+kw nightly use of current bill. The billing number is correct. Is it possible for another property or electrical work in the area to ‘piggy-back’ my supply? Can anyone help??

  • writer's block question?

How can I get over writer’s block?

I am about to start an undergraduate course and I have been asked to write an essay. There is no specific title. I have just to choose a person from history, and explain and analyse their achievements. I have taken notes. Howeve,r I have so many ideas in my head that I am unable to start. I can think of no overriding argument that will shape the direction of the essay. I am continually re-writing the first sentence and I can get no further! [I already have a higher degree so it is not that I am unused to work at this level.] I have tried mind-maps etc, but nothing works. It is causing real distress.Does anyone suggest how to get over this??

  • How best to calculate gradient of OB?

Rhombus OABC has OB=8 and AC=6. OC lies on x axis.

[Facts: Rhombus has 4 equal sides and diagonals bisect at right angles]

Using Pythag. I established that the rhombus has side=5. I thought that by dropping a perpendicular from B I could fit in another 3-4-5 triangle and work out the coordinates of B.Obviously this is not right as this would make the hypotenuse shorter than the base. I know the answer is gradient 3/4.Can someone please show where I'm going wrong here?

  • What is the f(g(x)) and value of p?

Two functions are defined on suitable domains as f(x) =4x+1 and g(x)=1/x-1

    a) If h(x)=f(g(x)), show clearly that h(x) can be written as h(x)=x+3/x-1

    b) Show that the value of h(√5) can be expressed in the form p+√5 and write down the value of p.

I'd be grateful if someone could show the working for this.

  • Would there be enough water for a ship in the harbour?

It is observed that because of silting up, the depth of water in a harbour at the end of each year is only seven eighths of what it was at the end of the previous year. A depth of 6m is needed to allow the passage of ships. If ships have had access to the harbour for the last three years, would it be satisfactory to dredge 2m of silt now and every three years thereafter?

I know that the question deals with conditions on a limit of 6m and if L=b/1-a then the value of b is under scrutiny. The 'now and every three years thereafter' is the part I don't know how to handle. I'd really be grateful for help.

  • Find values of a and b in log problem?

    (a) Express log(2)a-log(2)b=3 in the form a=kb and state the value of k.

(b)When a and b take the same values as in part9a) a second equation can be written as log(2)a+log(2)b=1. Find the values of a and b where a>0 and b>0

-I've just met laws of logs-

    (a) log(2)a-log(2)b=3----------------log(2)(a/b)=3 [law of logs:log(a)x-log(a)y=log(a)x/y]

    a=3b ,so k=3

    (b) If latter is correct, do I substitute 3b in second equation?

  • What is the relationship between p and q?

The point (2,2) lies on the parabola y=x^2+px+q.Find the relationship between p and q.

From given diagram the point lies on the intersection of the tangent y=x and the curve. I equated these to get x^2 +x(p-1)+q. Using the discriminant I got (p-1)^2-4q=0 which I broke down to 2q-p+1=0.Can anyone spot where the arith. error is?. [Answer should be 2p+q+2=0].

  • How to express dx/dy in terms of x?

    For y=x^2 (1) find dy/dx (ii)express x in terms of y (iii)find dx/dy (iv) use y=x^2 to express dx/dy in terms of x (v) comment on the relation between dy/dx and dx/dy

For (i) I have 2x and I've just realised that (ii) refers to the original function not the derivative but after this I'm stuck.I've not met this type of question before. Any help or reference would be appreciated.

  • Using simple trig express h in terms of Θ?

A box whose X section is a 5x12 rectangle is to be pushed through a window. The angle that the 12 unit side makes with the horizontal is Θ radians. The height of the window is h units where h=h1+h2.

I think I'm expected to use an addition formula here but cannot from diagram visualise what is needed. I'm teaching myself, so apologies if the answer is obvious.

  • Integrate: dx/(x^2-6x+9)?

Upper limit is 2 and Lower limit is 1.

Can someone remind me how to do this, please? I started with ( x^2-6x+9)^-1 but this would end up with ( x^2-6x+9)^0 and anything to the power of 0 is 1.
