  • Stop my tablet from destroying its camera's pictures?

Hi, I'm new to mobile devices; is there a way to get my camera to take images that are better than the current, horribly compressed, grainy JPGs?

Note, I am not referring to the image resolution, which is fine, but to the (probably) several layers of compression forced onto the camera's output to make the image file smaller.

I don't need that; I'm not going to just leave 100+ images lying around in my tablet's memory. They can be 5MB each for all I care. In fact, if this grainy nonsense is the output I can expect, I doubt I'll even use the tablet's camera.

As an added "bonus," both this site and Tinypic refuse to accept images from my PC.

  • Immigrating and working in UK with my Romanian ID Card?

According to List A of documents which provide an ongoing right to work in the UK one of the combinations is:

    2. A passport or _national identity card_ showing that the holder, or a person named in the passport as the child of the holder, is a national of the European Economic Area or Switzerland.

Since the last supplemental restrictions were removed on the 1st of January this year, does that mean that just having my original ID card on me is enough to be employable in the UK?

I ask because the ID card is good for 7 years (4 left on mine) and dirt cheap.

  • Some light on the interaction of atmosphere density and temperature please?

"In the thermosphere, temperatures continue to rise, eventually reaching 1000 K at about 1000 km, where pressure is about 1 nbar" - Wikipedia

The following quote is about the atmosphere of Jupiter, and it brought to light a nagging uncertainty that I have, thanks to my vast ignorance.

1000K is a huge temperature, and at normal air pressure I'd expect to be cooked in it in short order, or even combust; but at that pressure I somehow think it should be insignificant if I'm not moving with great speed in relation to the gas around me.

This would be so because with so few gas molecules exchanging heat with my body (one for every billion such exchanges in an one-bar atmosphere would occur), I would never feel the full effects of the 1000K temperature.

Is this true or false? And if false, why?

And, if true, would it follow that in the near-perfect void of outer space, if I had a sealed oxygen mask, I'd be perfectly comfortable, temperature-wise, unless close enough to a star? I realize of course that unfiltered radiation and possible high-speed collisions with minuscule particles would be the end of me quite quickly.

  • Anyone remember this old game's name?

When I was a kid, on two occasions (first at a local arcade, then at home) I played this old NES or SNES game and I can't find it anywhere.

The story, believe it or not, is that some seal guy or something like that, kidnaps a lot of fluffy yellow chicks (no idea what species, but they do have tiny wings), stuffing them in a bag.

The topmost of the chicks manages to escape by falling out of the bag (safely!) and starts an operation, by itself, to rescue the others. This is the player character.

Basically, you go around in 2D stages, which are timed but, unlike mario, there is quite a lot of mobility on the up-down axis as well, sometimes more than left-right. You solve jumping puzzles and shoot enemies with your firearm (!) to get to stage bosses that, when beaten, result in a fellow chick saved (can't confirm this) and advance to the next stage.

I can't even remember the game's name, but I do remember that it was very colorful, fun and cute.

What I do remember well are the first two bosses: A whale that swallows you and you have to destroy it from the inside, avoiding drops of apparently deadly poison that fall from its back to its gut, and a floating turtle that shoots full-black bats at you.

Anybody care to enlighten me as to the name of this game?

  • The last word on the US flat income tax is...?

I've been wondering about the status of the flat income tax in the States, how much exactly is it (I remember a huge 35% for some reason) and what is its status.

I've come across rumors that it is illegal to have such a tax in the States due to the Constitution, and that some people get away without paying it at all and are not charged with tax evasion.

Now I'm not from the States and I don't live anywhere near the States so that is why I'm so ignorant on the subject, please enlighten me.

  • How do you draw realistic metal and leather in Photoshop?

I'm talking about drawing them from scratch, with a pen tablet.

Basically, I want to draw a sword (well the hilt and a part of the blade) in detail and I've got the skeleton of the drawing done.

I have the structure, I've done most of the big shadows and highlights, the colors and a bit of detail on the pommel, which, together with the guard, is covered in gold (and dark rubies).

The leather is for the handle, which is light beige.

So what I need is ways to make the metallic and leather parts look like their respective material, by having the correct details and mini-highlights. I want the parts to look like they are in use, but rather new and well kept and cleaned.

Now, I've stared at pictures of swords and such until my eyes bled (figuratively), I've even stared at the blade of a kitchen knife to see how light falls on it and I am nowhere. I have no idea what I should be doing in PS to make my sword look like a sword.

Please don't suggest any books, though. I have no e-money, and am not likely to find printed stuff on this subject (my University library has already failed me on too many counts to trust it again).

  • If I don't want to be a slave, will I be a loser inevitably?

OK, I'll try to make this short. Though of no social class myself, I am of lower middle class stock with no inheritance which means I'll have to make my own way in the world.

That is only fair, to be sure, and I would not want to be pampered and bored, but for me it comes with a special dilemma attached.

I do not play lotteries of any kind, do not even consider the stock exchange, do not indulge in crime for profit and I am quite convinced I will absolutely never take any form of bank loan, not even buying an item in several payments.

So unless I "find" housing I will have to either stay with my parents or take to the streets, rent being a soft option which should be kept temporary. Right now I'm closing in on my final college year (hopefully).

It's my pleasure to think that I will have my own home before I hit thirty, like nigh everybody else (in my country at least). That's eight years and change from now, and I'm an outsider when it comes to finances. What are my options? Can I realistically get a house (or a flat, or whatever) under the rules I've set for myself, or be forced to remain with my parents and/or rent?

I live in Romania, a flawed democracy with a faulty market economy and real estate prices have been skyrocketing for years and continue to do so, perhaps until they align with the prices in the richest countries of Europe. I don't have kids, don't really want them - not at any rate until I sleep under my own roof, and I will never keep a housewife even if she's a goddess - nor will I accept to be a house-husband.

  • Anybody know of an exercise routine that can burn a lot (1500+) of calories quickly(5-10 minutes)?

The medics give ideal weight loss for chubby people such as myself (I am six feet seven inches with 253 pounds) at one pound a week which means an average daily calorie balance of -500. 50 pounds, 50 weeks, they say. A year is 52 weeks and change.

    Unacceptable.

What IS acceptable is an energy-guzzling exercise routine, preferably one that also takes as little time as possible, which, coupled with eating no more than I do at present (which is plenty) would give me a calory balance of as low as -3,000.

Oh, and let it be something I can do. My physical strength is mediocre.

Do not fret for my safety, I am responsible for that. I'll find out how long I can hold this pace and only implode my caloric balance in short bouts, initially to cut myself down to 205-210 pounds and thereafter, if I ever have weight gaining trends, to adjust it downwards.
