Hello. I am here to exchange technological experience, as well as help people understand things better.
How can I network my printer(s)?
I have several printers at home, working just fine over USB (though the older ones are having issues with recent versions of OS X and Windows 7). Seeing as most of the time people here are using their laptops or tablets to access the internet over WiFi, it can be challenging to print something.
So my question was, how can I set up networked printing, auto print from PDF files dropped in a folder, and AirPrint all at once? I have several old computers that are just begging to get used (or donated), it would be great to put one to useful use.
3 AnswersPrinters9 years agoHow exactly do LEDs work?
Please don't give me a super-vague answer from Wikipedia or Google, I have access to those two as well.
So from my understanding, what happens is that there are 2 semiconductors, the P-junction and the N-junction, with a depletion zone in-between them. Both semiconductors can conduct electricity whichever way, however if they want to conduct electricity in the circuit, they must conduct it from the p to the n junction, through the depletion zone.
The depletion zone is made up of holes through which the electrons flow, and release the photon due to the impurities (assumingly the material that defines the color of the LED, e.g. Gallium Nitrate for blue/white). This is called forward bias. When backwards bias is applied, you ruin the LED. Next you have to do use E = h x c/lambada to calculate all those photons, and use Planck's constant, and this is where I really get lost...
Can someone please explain me EXACTLY what happens with LEDs, and tell me if I got the part up top correct? I kind of have to give in a 4000 word paper about this in tomorrow, have no clue what I'm doing.
2 AnswersEngineering9 years agoWhich router do I need?
Hi,
I am looking for a VDSL2 router. Any recommendations? I just need something to replace the crap that my ISP gave me.
My requirements are IPV6, and ISDN compatibility. Gigabit switch would be nice too.
1 AnswerComputer Networking9 years agoWhat is up with my flash drives?
So I've been having a bit of bad luck recently with flash drives.
A year ago, I bought 2 16GB generic flash drives at a local electronics shop, and the first one failed in february or something. So I bought it back into the shop, and they gave me the cash back with no questions asked (the reason why I buy these sorts of things in physical shops). With it, I bought exactly the same drive, but the 32GB version. So far I'm not having any issues with the new one, however I've had a couple of issues with the second 16GB one, which was used for the bigger part of its lifespan as a windows install disk. But now, after upgrading it to a windows 8 install iso, it stopped mounting after the first install... my mac doesn't recognize it, however on debian I can get it to pop up at least, however I can't mount it. I've tried lsusb, it shows the 'Feia technology' controller, but that's it, and dmesg shows that there are a bunch of I/O errors. Mounting it, or using fsck, doesn't work at all. What could be the problem? Was the block holding the filesystem info damaged or something?
Apart from that, I just got a 64gb flash drive, which has several THOUSAND dead blocks... like a week after use. Not too happy about that, but unfortunately I can't get it replaced because I swapped out the casing for a 2gb one, so my 8yr old wouldn't notice me replacing a 64gb drive with a slightly more suited one.
Apart from that, I would like to get a 64gb JetFlash 500 as a replacement. What do you guys think?
2 AnswersOther - Hardware9 years agoHow to enable quiet mode on 650D?
Just wondering, how do I enable quiet mode on the Canon 650D camera? I can't seem to find the option anywhere... and the shutter can be quite loud at times when you're trying to be discrete!
3 AnswersCameras9 years agoIs it possible to combine multiple USB keyboards?
I have looked around, and I haven't found much. Basically, I would like to combine the input from a barcode scanner, RFID reader and a simple keyboard into a single output. This will then get connected to an iPad. Are there any devices that can do this? If not, how can I do this?
1 AnswerOther - Computers9 years agoHow can I unblock this GT-E1080i?
I got a Samsung GT-E1080i this month to use as a secondary phone to go to festivals and such, however unfortunately I can't use this because it is blocked to the worst network in the country (Lebara). I was told that it would be locked to their network (hence the 10$ cost), but that I most likely could get a free unlock code online, however I cannot find any free ones. Anyone have these codes?
2 AnswersCell Phones & Plans10 years agoHow can I design this circuit board?
I need to make a schematic for a circuit board that would have a DC input of 20 to 35V, up to 700ma, and then output it to a 20W LED that takes up similar voltages and current. The only problem though, is that this LED needs to stay on low power (10% or something with acceptable temperature), until activated by a motion sensor, at which point it will go to 100% mode for 30 seconds or another, definable value, after detecting movement. The last requirement is that there is a thermistor, which can cut toff the whole circuit until the LED cools down to acceptable temperatures. Please advise me how, and using which components, to design this. A schematic would be nice ;).
2 AnswersEngineering10 years agoWhat RAM sticks should I chose?
I am gonna build my own power computer on a budget, and while choosing which RAM sticks I should use (I'm gonna buy 2x2GB and then in the future maybe more of the same kind, if I have more money), I stumbled upon a difficult choice: there were like 15 different RAM stick combos that I could chose from, all of them are DDR3-DIMM, PC3-10666 (1333MHz) ones, but the only difference is that all of them have different timings: CL9-9-9-24, CL9-9-9-20, CL7-7-7-24 and CL6-6-6-24. There are also abbreviations such as CL9 and CL7. Apart from that, there is no difference, apart from with the price :P!
So, what should I know about these numbers? Because the differences in price between them are like 50 bucks, so I have no idea!
3 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade agoHow can I convert scanned image to font for free?
I've been looking at different ways to create a font, and so far what I have done is scanned several pages worth of letters, then converted them into neat SVGs. I can't find any software that doesn't cost a fortune and that will do this for free. What can I do? I am NOT paying, so don't even implement on this, and nor am I redrawing it onto a template I printed of from some website.
3 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoHow can I force the resolution?
I have recently upgraded windows on my laptop (HP 6715s), and the resolution will either go to 1400 x 1050 or 1600 x 1200, but not the resolution of my monitor, 1650 x 1050. I have already installed all the drivers, and after I did this, it worked. Now, I turned on my PC again, and I got a real low resolution, which I tried to change to the normal one, but it didn't give me any options. Oh, and if this does this to me all the time, is there an app that I can run during the start up to automatically change this?
1 AnswerMonitors1 decade agoIs there any remote possibility of recovering an unsaved open office file?
First of all, sorry for being a jack **** an using open office, I never use it but i didn't have access to my computer today. So the problem is that I have been writing a very long essay, and I have been saving it every few minutes. Unfortunately, the stupid open office didn't tell me that my usb stick onto which I was saving it all wasn't plugged it. So is there any way of getting the 2000 words that took me nearly 4 hours to write back? Oh, and the open office backup folder is empty.
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoHow can I solve these equations on a TI-83?
So basically, we are going to be tested in class using our calculators, and I need to know how to convert between various forms of quadratic functions. These are:
General/Standard form y=ax2+bx+c to y=(x+alpha)(x-beta)
Factored form y=(x+alpha)(x-beta) to y=ax2+bx+c
Vertex form y=a(x-h)2+k to y=ax2+bx+c
By 2, as in y=ax2, I mean squared, I just don't have a squared key on my keyboard, and by alpha and beta I mean the greek letters.
I can more or less do this without a calculator but since it takes forever to do it like that, I was hoping I can write some sorta program (with a tutorial of course :P) that will make my life much easier.
Any and all help is really needed! My test starts in just a few hours, so please!
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoCan my ISP cheat on me?
Yes, it sounds a bit weird, since this normally happens in screwed up relationships :P. However, I have a feeling that my ISP is cheating on me, because my internet connection speed is horrible. What do I mean by horrible? No more than 300 Kb/s download speed while downloading a very well seeded torrent on a 20 Mb line. And when this is happening, no one else can use the internet.
This is worrying since until last summer, I could dl at 1.5 mb/s, my brother could stream HD (1080p) video and I could watch HD videos on youtube. But then after we came back from the summer vacations, we could no longer do this. Now it takes at least an hour (1 hour!!!!!) to download a movie! And no one can use the line at the same time, not even for email, since the ping will be over 2000 ms (even for google), and sometimes it can't connect to the internet at all. My speed test shows up MAX 3.5 Mb/s down, and .5 Mb/s up, on a 20down/1up Mb/s line. And this is when NO ONE is using the internet connection!
So what I think is happening is that my ISP is cheating on us since we still pay the same amount of money, but they jammed several more clients on the same connection/switch box/whatever so now most of the time no one has a full connection. Plus, they downgraded our connection to 15 mb/s, and when we called them to make sure they fix their error, they told us that we never had a 20 mb/s line (a complete lie, we had it 'till last summer). This, along with advice from someone who knows about this sorta stuff, makes me think that my ISP is cheating on me and by adding more clients they are slowing down everyones lines.
6 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoLooking for a cheap, silent air compressor?
So for my project I need an air compressor that will run silently (not louder than an old computer, under 40 Db, usable at night without disturbing anyone), will draw less than 100 watt of energy, and can pump out more or less 7 cfm @ 180 PSI. The minimum is 4 cfm @ 90 PSI, but I'd highly prefer if this is available cheaply at a higher power.
I am looking for something with shipping to switzerland (yes, you read that right!) for under 300$/200 Euros
4 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoWhich chords match these notes?
I have a music project, and I need some chords to match these guitar notes/tabs:
(6)1, (4)3, (4)1, (5)1, (3)3, (3)1
I have already figured that the first one should be a F chord, then the second one should be a F Major chord, but I got kind off lost for the other 4. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated!
3 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoWhat printer should I choose?
I am looking for a printer 130 CHF (120$) that has a color display, can print on CD's and has an automatic document reader. I'd also like it to be fast, beating the 25 ppm barrier for both color and b&w printing. I'm not so flexible on price, so I'd prefer that the printer would be within those limits. I don't mind if it is an ink or a laser printer, although I'm not so sure laser printers can print on disks...
Well anyways, any help is welcome, apart from the no-lives that post stupid blog spot ads.
2 AnswersPrinters1 decade agoDifference LENOVO IdeaPad S10e and S10?
I read on the internet that the only two differences between the two models is that the S10 has an 0.1" bigger Anti-Glare screen, and that they have different HD sizes. I don't mind about the HD, but what difference does the bigger and anti-glare screen do?
3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoIs there a free and good online form generator?
Ok, I tried JotForm, and I liked it best out of all the ones I've found within the first 2 pages of Google. The only problem is, is that it requires 9$ a month to use it unlimitedly. I understand that it is most likely a super simple script that isn't hard to make, but I have no knowledge how to. Is there another website with similar functionality for free, or is there a website that shows you how to do so.
I've added to my website a form: http://isasha.net46.net/1_5_Contact.html but it doesn't want to send it, since I don't pay :(
2 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoWhich VPN provider should I choose?
I'm interested in a VPN provider which isn't more than 100$/year for unlimited bandwidth. It should be as fast as my actual internet (20 mb/s) or nearly as fast. It should allow me to foreward any port, and not keep a record of anything I do.
