  • Another stat question?

Whonose Economic Forecasting Inc and Wazzup Econometrics have the same mean error per year in forecasting the stock market over the last ten years. However, the standard deviation for Whonose is 40 points and 30 points for Wazzup. At the 0.05 significance level can we conclude that Wazzups forecast is more accurate?

I don't know how to solve this one. I thought I could compare the standard deviations in relation to the standard error of the mean to derive the number of samples, but I can't do it or I'm doing it wrong. Please help me out and provide work.

  • Statistics/probability question?

Find the probability that 1 of the first 4 batters in the batting order gets a hit, if the probability of getting a hit is .240.

  • statistics problem (index numbers)?

I don't know how to solve this problem :/

If the Consumer Price Index, where the base period is 1982, was 189 in 2002, by what percent have prices risen since 1982?

  • Statistics problem, best answer given if work provided!?

University hires only Professors who were in the top 6% of their graduate school classes. If the mean grad school GPA is 3.1 with σ = .2, what’s the minimum GPA needed to get hired?

I had thought because of the empirical rule that it must be between 3.5 and 3.7 (because 3.5 is 2 standard deviations away from the mean and 95% is within the first two deviations) but I realized that was wrong. So, I tried to get the z-score. The closest value on the table was 0.0596, giving me a z-score of 0.25. I just don't know how to get the answer from here.

Please don't just give me an answer, its no good to me if I can't figure it out!

  • Should my boyfriend and I match?

My boyfriend and I are going to two weddings in the next few weeks. I have never been to a wedding with a date, so I don't know the protocol on matching. For the first wedding, I am wearing a black dress with some purple and white accents. I know its dark for a spring wedding, but the wedding is in a week and I won't have time to go shopping. He was planning on buying a black suit because he doesn't have one and black would be most universal. Should we attempt to get a tie that matches, or just have him wear whatever he has?

  • Why does BMEzine suck so much now and where else can I go?

I mean really. There are no entries on Modblog of substance now, and comments of moderated like internet in China. The pictures they put on aren't even that interesting most of the time either; its typically girls with a few piercings with their shirts off, although occasionally they show a guy. The main site isn't being updated under the pretense that they are working on the "new" site, which they never gave a release date for. And this world tour thing, although only just beginning, looks like it will be lame.

Sorry, rant over. What other bodmod sites are good? I've followed BME for years, since it was under Shannon's control (and good lol), but I don't really know what else is out there.

  • Do you actually need to study for GRE tests?

I am applying to accelerated nursing programs, and some require GRE scores. Are they like the SATs in that you don't actually have to study, or should I buckle down and prepare? I did well on the SATs without spending money on prep programs, and when I asked my mother (who has a Masters), she said it was unnecessary to study for the GRE.

If you did study, please let me know what reference books you used. Thanks.

  • planning a corny road trip?

My boyfriend and I want to do a road trip in the US and see random, corny landmarks. For example, we intend to hit up the largest ball of twine in existence in Minnesota. Why? Well, we like to do stuff like this.

Problem being, if you look up random, corny landmarks on the internet, you don't get good results.

Any other fun/stupid landmarks out West to take a look at? We're starting in Philadelphia and intend to head westward, although I don't think he'd object to going South.

Also, the person who leaves the wittiest answer (that pertains to the question) will receive 10 points. People that complain about how lame my boyfriend and I are will be hunted down by ninja hamsters. You have been warned.

  • Slightly off-topic question for men?

Seeing as this place is typically full of men's men, here's my question:

What do you want/expect for Valentine's Day?

Everyone knows girls like affection and romance, and the flowers/candy/jewelry formula. But what the hell do you do for a man?

The stereotype is of course lingerie, but that gets expensive. Frankly he'd probably be satisfied with head, but the idea of making sexual favors a gift seems odd to me. Maybe I hang out with too many feminists.

Say you were a 21 yr old nerd. Would a t-shirt about your favorite videogame and a tin of your favorite homemade cookies suffice? Also, consider that its Valentine's Day and you'll probably get laid anyways.

  • Can the Eagles still make the playoffs?

I keep hearing that the Eagles aren't completely shut out of the playoffs, even after today's [inexcusable] loss...

is it actually possible that we could still make it? If so, what has to happen?

  • How hard is it to heal a clavicle piercing?

I'm looking into getting a clavicle piercing, and I understand that its risky. I'm wondering which is better, sub-clavicle vs surface, in terms of likelihood it will heal, safety of the procedure, etc. Basically, any first hand information would be great.
