  • Quitting job after only one shift, can still stay on Jobseekers?

Sorry if this is a little long and confusing..

I've been on Jobseekers Allowance for a few weeks, and have recently started work as a Christmas Temp at Royal Mail as a mail sorter. The actual full-time shift starts in December, however exra work is available during November. So far I've only done one shift this week just to see what it was like, but I haven't notified the Job Centre yet and have not yet cancelled my claim as I was intending to do this after my first shift.

However, I was put in a deparment with males (I'm a 19yr old female). Even the department supervisor was surprised that their manager had put me in this deparment, as the work is usually done by males as it requires heavy lifting, and I'm generally small.

Anyway, during the shift I began to get a back ache and notified my supervisor about this. He told me to have a rest, then later moved me to a different section for the end of the shift. But I was told that I would have to work in any department I was told to, most of which would require a lot of heavy lifting. I said I wouldn't be able to do too much heavy lifting, but he told me to speak about it to the agency I got the job through.

However. My question is, if they tell me to constantly do heavy lifting that I am incapable of without it causing me pain, and I choose to quit now after one shift, will I still have to cancel my Jobseekers claim? I was thinking that I would quit work now, and tell the Job Centre during my next sign-on(next week) that I have worked one shift and it was unsuitable as it caused me back pain so they could deduct this payment from my next JSA payment. Is this allowed?

I'm confused and unsure of what to. I was going to try one more shift at work just to see if I can be moved to a better suited department, but I tried ringing in so many times to ask for a shift, but no one is ever there to answer the phone. I might try ringing again tomorrow.
