  • Winter container garden options zone 5b or colder?

I live in Brooklyn and recently started a roof garden.

Current plants will die or move inside as the weather changes, but I want to keep things growing up there, so I need to find plants that can survive being grown in containers in full sun through the fall and as long into winter as possible.

Internet tells me NYC is zone 6b and to go colder for containers. Suggestions found are mostly trees, not practical here. I'm guessing ornamental cabbage and ivy, but is there anything more interesting or colorful I could plant that might survive?

  • Tomato plants turning yellow?

Why are my cherry tomato plants turning yellow?

Roof garden, planted in 5 gallon buckets with full sun, fertilized potting soil, bottom leaves are turning yellow and dying and it's spreading upward. Plants were growing vigorously until recently and have many flowers and tomatoes growing. I check them daily after work and if soil is dry (always is if it hasn't rained that day) I water thoroughly.

Under watered? Over watered? Root bound? I can't imagine it's bugs, we're up pretty high. If they die before the tomatoes ripen I will be really pissed off. What's wrong with them? Can I save them?

  • Roommate stole my security deposit?

My roommate moved out suddenly yesterday.

She's the leaseholder through the end of Feb, and responsible for paying our rent. I gave one month's rent as a security deposit when I moved in, and just discovered she spent it and doesn't intend to pay me back.

I don't want to pay February's rent. I want the landlord to make her pay it to recoup the security deposit, because she won't pay if it's just me trying to get it out of her.

I know she doesn't have the money now, and I want him to turn the damn thumbscrews until she comes up with it. And if she doesn't, I want her credit to suffer. She thinks she should get away with it just because she needs the money, as if the rest of us don't.

Can I do this? Is she responsible for that money, or can she just walk away?

  • Bushwick/Brooklyn grocery stores?

I just moved to Bushwick, in Brooklyn, and have discovered that my new neighborhood doesn't have any grocery stores. Just fast food places and bodegas that sell canned goods and beer. Searching google maps isn't much help, since all the bodegas are named stuff like "Ted's grocery and deli."

I just need a place to get vegetables and stuff that's cheaper than going to the Whole Foods in Manhattan. Does anyone know if there's a decent cheap grocery store near any of the stops on the L line?

  • sky diving/base jumping?

I live in the New York/New Jersey area, and want to try sky-diving.

How do I go about finding lessons? I've googled it, but I have no idea how to tell which organizations are legit and safe and which are crap.

Also, I'm poor. Obviously this is not th kind of thing one should go for the cheapest possible option on, but assuming one scrimps and saves, would it be possible for someone making a basic sustenance salary to pursue lessons in this area?

  • Dumbledore - why wasn't it in the books?

Hysterics over "OMG, Dumbledore is GAY!!1?!" aside, is anyone else slightly annoyed that we find this out *now,* as opposed to in the actual books?

I suppose it makes some sense. The books are from Harry's POV, and under any circumstances youthful unrequited love for a man who turned out to be evil (and who he eventually had to destroy) probably wouldn't be one of those things Dumbledore would mention much. And given the stupid level of hysterical drama that seems to inevitably result from absolutely anything relating to queer people, outting Dumbledore in the book would have distracted from the main plot.

And don't get me wrong - I seriously love JKR, and I appreciate any new addition to the sadly tiny number of heroic, complex gay characters in popular culture. But if she knew Dumbledore was gay from the start, I wish she'd found a way to work it into the books, at least into the revelations about Dumbledore that Harry discovers after his death.
