I have just discovered that a friend is allowing her abusive son to dominate the household because he otherwise threatens to take his baby, that she has been rearing, away. He initially left his mentally ill girlfriend after she attempted to kill herself and the bub during a drug-induced episode, but has no emotional attachment to the child himself. Since he 'returned home', he has become more and more abusive, both verbally and physically, but my friend does not dare call the police because he has told her that he will either a) take the child away, or b) let the mother have her again; my friend seriously worries for the child's safety in either scenario, and does not want the baby in foster care when she is more than willing to bring her up herself. Does she have any rights over her grandchild whom she loves dearly, or is the law solely on the parents' side?
